How to get past that point where I keep dieng?

I just got thrown into the abyss against my own will.... again. I've only once ever gotten out and that was cause the exit spawned before I aggroed anything. I usually just run hoping the exit will pop up... but I was thinking of standing my ground a bit to not get swarmed... but I only got one piece of food.

How do you guys play through the abyss... do you bother fighting or just run.

Got through the abyss... way easier then I remember.

Had a really nice evening star gifted to me as anti magic branded... used a scroll of what I thought was vorpalize... but randomly branded it to freezzing. wasn't bad...until I ruined it and gave it chaos. And all out of enchant scrolls. Manual of shields and that evening star is what made me want to go one handed with shield.

Depths is throwing me off... makes the game seem way sshorter... or am I missing something?

Stealthy fast character like Sp can just run, Mi in plate armour needs to fight fast and normal speed monsters who noticed him provided it can kill them.

How to deal with summoners and hellfire now.... Got my eveningstar back

but would the lower min speed of the demon whip make it better if it were enchanted to +8 aswell? Really wish I could find some useful MR+ other than the robe. Is rPois getting useless at this point in the game? should I be using the mr robe instead? I hate the shoals... tides make a heavy character piss his pants everytime ilsuiw shows her face. Last time I drowned mid way through the fight with her. Got lucky and she didn't summon crap tones of those water spirits and came at me by herself.

Depths 6 is flooded with troll magi and boggarts... I can't seem to kill the minions and get to the summoner faster than they can summon more. But I did manage elfs:3 with the same problem. but now I got hellfire to contend with or maybe it's torment... watching half my life dissapear in a single burst of fire is not fun.

think my evo is too low to make that awesome... but it worked a little

made it easier then just stair dancing.

I cleaered Depths 6, got 2 runes; snake and shoals but now I'm wondering were the hell to get the third one... I've never survived vault:5, and never stepped into the slime pits before and after reading about it, not sure I'm setup for it yet. I'll probably do the first 4 floors of vaults to look for gear and exp atleast then decide on what rune to snag and head for zot town.

Oh and check out the most painful GDA I just found

You may want to try the Abyssal rune.
Abyss:3 is not much more dangerous than Abyss:1, and you survived it (as well as Elf:3 ?), so you clearly have your chances.
You don't have multi-target damage, so Vault:5 may be hard for you.
And Slime is really item-dependent : you "need" clarity, rMut, rCorr, Cons, preferably on different slots (on artifacts)...

The only thing I would not go into Slime without in that list is rCorr (it's probably doable, but very annoying). You don't need clarity if you have decent MR, you don't need stasis if you have bolt wands, and shining eyes are slow / rare / have bad defenses and can be dealt with, though rMut is nice if you have it.
You do need some rC though because azure jellies melee is no joke.

Oddly Elf:3 and Vault:5 were pretty much a breeze.... vault:5 seemed like something else had cleared it before I got there.... other than the welcoming committy there must have only been 20 or so more monsters in there and all mostly dragons that can't even touch me hahaha.... but then ofcourse there are fricken liches and orbs of fire in zot. Almost cleared the left lung of Zot:5 when the game decided to spawn a shit ton of threats between me and my escape. waged a decent fight till the liche realized my weakness and dropped my hp in two turns .... bah so close yet again.

Amulet of conservation is useless if you don't use consumables. Use potions of speed/resistance/agility/might during dangerous fights and heal rot (if you have excessive healing sources) before any fights next time.
Also Silence helps vs Liches.

I think the biggest mistake was probably fighting all those dudes at once in this position. Some minor stuff though:
"You feel less confused". Trog's Hand gives you loads of MR and liches know some of the nastiest Hexes in the game. Using Trog's Hand vs. them is recommended.
I usually don't feel very comfortable fighting OoFs with only rF+, but it's probably OK with your HP if you would do that 1v1.
You should've been hasted in a situation like that. Learning to use consumables is very important in Crawl.
Regarding rot: I don't think healing it is that important since those HW potions/charges might be better used in an actual combat situation.

This is why I wrote "(if you have excessive healing sources)". It is suboptimal to have 14 zaps of heal wounds, 12 potions of curing and 23 rotting, especially for a character who died at -4 HP.
