Re: All The Gods

You're right that I have not been abusing corpse delivery. Part of sublimation's drawback is the extra time it takes to get your mana back, whereas with Vehumet it's instantaneous. Two turns (wield / cast) and sometimes even more if you have to butcher a corpse can be the difference. My current Kiku worshipper is a HEFe that I'm playing as a hybrid, just so I can try and un-teach myself to rely so much on spells and actually kill mobs another way. It's slower going than a straight-up Vehumet blaster, but again, that's the point of this exercise for me.. to draw some flexibility in playstyle and become a better player.

Animate Skeleton is, I believe, faster than butchering (though not guaranteed with kiku). Also gives you a skeleton which is generally better than no skeleton.
I am not a very good player. My mouth is a foul pit of LIES. KNOW THIS.

I never put two and two together on that one. I was so focused on butchering that I forgot all about animating skeletons leaving chunks.

Try Naga caster. They have such a big health pools that Sublimation + regeneration can bring them many times 50 MP while not killing them.

A DrTm has that gimmick beat. But really, it's chunk management that's the issue here. High powered sub.blood can get you more than Sif's maximised Inv channeling can hope to achieve. Get to Dis and it's not unusual to be wielding a stack of 20 chunks (provided you have the Str) if you worship Kiku.

Re: All The Gods

Chalk another one up. Finally got a Ely victory with a HOHe. The character looked a lot like my HOPr at the end with silver crossbow bolts taking down Orbs, but pacification on Ancient Liches made Zot:5 easier than the Priest. Never found hasting, slaying or a good executioner's axe at all but only had a hairy moment with one pan lord on the run back up.

Again, I want to thank everyone whose given me advice in the thread. It has helped so far tremendously.

And another one down! SEEE + Ash made for a very powerful combo. Using LRD to kill uniques without ever seeing who they were (just hitting Ash's red mobs until they die) felt very satisfying, and even though I memorized Shatter, it didn't get much use. Toyed briefly with trying the Shatter Tomb strategy but just decided to get the win in the books. So three down and I'm actually streaking with two consecutive wins here.

Re: All The Gods

Finally got a Kiku win! Took the advice above to go Kiku with a bulky caster.. ended up with a yellow Draconian and played him as a hybrid summoner. Struggled until finally got the Book of the Dragon, which made it easier to go ahead and win - won as level 24, which is the first time I've won a game below level 27. Still probably didn't get as many corpses delivered as most people use but it was enough to get me some good MP replenishment in Zot. I don't know why I worry so much about losing piety.. although Kiku's torment protection helped in D:27 when I had to loop around and around to get to an exit and some tormenters showed up.

I've definitely hit the break point.. Ash, Ely, Kiku and Beogh are the easier Gods compared to what's left - Jiyva, Fedash, Lugonu and Zin. Will probably try melee Lugonu next.

Also, the trunk upgrade to 0.13 happened in the middle of this game - will probably go back to 0.12 to finish the goal. Unless of course I want to dabble in the jester frenzy.

Re: All The Gods

Lugonu win in the books, with a Minotaur CK. Got a very nice acquirement axe in turn 6000 on Lair:1 and it lasted me all the way through the end.

6029 | Lair:1 | Identified the +3, +10 battleaxe of Psychosis {chop, +Blink rElec Int-3 SInv} (You acquired it on level 1 of the Lair of Beasts)

Probably should have dove for the Abyss rune but decided not to after Zot was the nasty entrance with moths of wrath and a ton of mobs (evilmike_ambush) and it was a slog to clear enough room for me to get back out after getting the Orb.

Only three to go. There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

The novelty wears off after the first few 15-rune wins. It then becomes an unnecessary chore that just extends the game when you could be trying out other character ideas.

3 runes feels too easy. As you mentioned in some other thread having any level 6 bolt wins you a game.

I see. If extended becomes boring for me, I think I will stop playing crawl. So far I feel boring to get to extended more often.

No, but there are only certain types of characters I'm comfortable doing extended with. Many of these gods that I haven't won with are considered bad or useless in extended and since the goal is to win with the god ...

And yes, as Psieye points out, extended is a giant slog. Maybe one of my future goals will be bettering my high score, which is this character, by the way: http://dobrazupa.org/morgue/tcjsavannah ... 194152.txt

My first 15-runer was a MiBe, didn't leave Trog, and I have an online HoBe who did the same. Turns out demons are weak to axes and crossbows (or javelins) too.

Light at the end of the tunnel! After spectacularly splatting a MiIE of Fedhas to Jory (yay milestones), I got a MiFi of Zin going really early and thanks to two +6 rings of protection and a CPA in a Bailey, pretty much steamrolled through things. Beat my head against a brick wall in Elf:3 and got Abyssed four times but did get the rune, which is my first Abyss rune since the re-design. So I'm down to just two now - Fedhas and JIyva.

I'm surprised you have trouble winning with Fedhas. Now, I'll admit I haven't won with him yet, but he's most useful when you need him the most - at low level / low piety. Wandering mushrooms are that good. If you want to abuse him even more, pick a Mf!

Re: All The Gods

There have been a variety of reasons I've splatted my MfIEs of Fedhas, but mostly it comes down to inattention and not buying into Fedhas enough to pump his invocations. Also, I'm not very good with hybrids. Either blast or full melee, I'm fine with, but when I get caught trying to be good at both, I usually fail.

Just be a MfGl of Fedhas. I don't see why you must be a hybrid to get the most out of the plants. Later on, you definitely want to have enough Inv to cast rain reliably.

Re: All The Gods

Fedhas is in the books.. after a couple more IE splats, I rolled a TrMo intending on diving for Slime to try and find a Jiyva altar. When none was around, I decided to worship Fedhas and rolled through most of the game as an unarmed killing machine, then used Oklobs in a couple of tight Vault and Zot spots until Zot:5, where ZotDef was in full effect. Several orbs and ancient liches fell to the Oklob army, and victory was mine!

Now the final goal awaits.. JIyva. Assuming I can ever find an altar again. The last four to five characters I've started trying to intentionally worship Jiyva right off the bat, I've never found an altar. So I guess now the best option is to just roll a character good enough to get through Slime, then convert.

Re: All The Gods

And it's done! After a week of trying to find an early Jiyva altar to worship and even splatting a MiFi trying to race to Slime:6 just to get to the altar, I finally got a Troll Fighter strong enough to survive the dive to Slime:6, even without rCorr or a cloak of preservation. Once I worshipped Jivya, a quick trip to Orc:1 and Vaults:1 had enough jellies spawn to quickly get to 6 piety. Dove through Zot quickly, slimified enough Guardians and Ancient Liches to give me allies in fights against orbs, then had a couple of harrowing moments on the Orb run back up.

Was really hoping to finish my goal before the 0.12 tourney started, so I'm glad I could get it out of the way. Now, it's tournament time, then probably off to another goal afterwards. Again, thanks to everyone who helped out throughout the thread and on ##crawl with suggestions and advice.

"All the species", probably?

Well either all the species or all the classes. I am bad at certain species for sure (like vampires) and it would be easier, I think, to win all the classes given that you can pick an easier species to mitigate the class drawbacks. But one of the reasons I chose the first goal was to get better at playing characters I wasn't comfortable playing.

Re: All The Gods

Winning all races is far more interesting than winning all backgrounds.

Not to mention it is more about skill to win with all the species then in comparison to backgrounds where sometimes it is simply luck.

Re: All The Gods

Congrats.
You inspired me to try the same (all species would be cool too, I just noticed I've never PLAYED Human). I expect it will take several months to achieve it.

Re: All The Gods

Being similar to you would probably make most people classify me as a jerk.

But you have given me good advice, so against all reason I actually like you. Which probably makes us both jerks.....aside from your hating vampires.
