But he'd be all up in my grill, tossing Mephitic Cloud in my face, knifing me while I knifed him and there was a dragon on the loose in the level. I wish the game gave me fireball before I knew this.

And if you see a group of non-Merfolk in Shoals:5, you aren't getting the rune, not with Mara with them. And not if in the opposite direction is another group of fiends.
Once again, Scroll of Teleport, I cannot kiss you this time either as you've crumbled into dust in the water.

Edit: If you're looking for one easy spell, you're going to find four Grand Grimoires and an entire library without that spell.

If a floor has a powerful unique near a set of stairs and you reenter it, that teleport trap will land you right next to it.

When you get sent to the Abyss by a coincidental Zot Trap to get you out of that jam, the exit you take will land you near that same unique.

Explicative explicative.

If you are fighting Mara and acquire the Misled status, and immediately afterward blow up Mara with an orb of destruction and run away from his clones, check your history and make sure there's an entry there about Defeated Mara. You might not have blown up who you thought.

If you have teleportitis and you blink away from a Pan Lord and his croonies, it'll kick in and teleport you right back to them.
And you'll find anything but what you need in Pan.

Not as bad as when Shadow Creatures in Hive (when it existed) got you a mighty horde of...plants.

(Granted, a nice big wall of plants could help you with crowd control, but Shadow Creatures being what it is, you'd get two plants at opposite edges of LOS which did nothing useful.)

- After you successfully hibernate a critter, it will resist further hibernation for a long time (might be around 20 turns). (From the Knowledge Bot, http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/bots)

Scrolls of Fog or similar effects don't work well against him, since he just quickly gets around them.

If you are fighting Wiglaf and some centaurs, think hard before killing the latter where the former can pick up one of their bows.

More generally- never leave ammo and launchers stacked together where nasties can find them. I now routinely collect bows, crossbows, blowguns and slings from the cold dead hands of their owners and then go up to the previous floor to dump them (caveat- unless I want the ammo, then I ninja that and leave the launcher to rot).

Specifically for your situation though, this is pretty much the best tactical application of apportation- kill one creature and then yank that awesome weapon away before next thing grabs it.

I only bother doing this on D1 with darts (dump wherever once inventory is full). I swear, the most deaths I ever get are from kobolds with runed darts on D1.

Darts (especially runed ones) can be surprisingly useful for an apprentice who has close-ranged spells at the beginning (Fire or Ice Elementalist, and Earth Elementalist to a lesser extent). One well-enchanted dart can seriously damage an unlucky orc or kill a hobgoblin or a small snake. As far as I could tell, a stack of +2 darts with no brand is even more useful than darts of explosion/dispersal/fire/ice -- mostly because you can use them without the censor within you screaming with rage.

They make up for the high cost of Throw Flame/Frost until, say, 15-20MP or Strawberry/Sultana hunger level, and they let you worry less about food in the very beginning when your apprentice is still unexperienced in Spellcasting.

Darts are also quite useful for waking up one monster at the edge of LOS, so that it comes towards you and you can fight it without going too far into unknown territory.

Chain Lightning is great fun.

[edit: By the same token, Ring of Flames is hella fun, but catching yourself directly with the edge of Fire Storm still hurts when you only have rF+.]

I learned two things today, and thankfully they just burned valuable resources, didn't kill me :)

A) Trying to kill Ettins with sticky flame is a bad idea (I always killed them before in ranged, didn't know they were 45x2 damage!!)
B) Don't forget to turn on traps to about 8 before vaults. Getting frailx3 from a single zot glow sucks

either your character is going to,
or he is going to say "You're going to die" to this enemy and succeed.
Choose.

In the spirit of the post right above this, TAB (auto-battle default) doesn't work with Xom worshippers. You don't want to be tabing a helion while you were fighting a rat on early D.

Your ridiculously powerful conjurator can die, even in the Vestibule of Hell, if you don't pay close attention to what you're doing (especially if it's not what you thought).

This will cause you to cry bitter tears of frustration at your own shortcomings.
