Yet another stupid question

I have NaFi of Chei, with normal trident of flame, and just take out Agness with vampiric lajatang. It looks cool, does tons of damage even untrained, but still I have 21 in polearms and 0 in staves (apt -1 +4 from pole crosstraining). Is it absolutely stupid idea to switch for staves, assuming worse apt, and it is about midgame (Lair and Swamp cleared, Orc almost cleared, Dungeon level is 18, and now on Pit:2)

Would be normal halberd better than trident of flame?

Also I'm using trident with normal shield (untrained), is it worse than using of polearm withou shield, and should I raise skill up to 5/15 to negate penalty, or just drop it and use polearms only?

And that ponderous hat from Gastronook. It's not extremely useful in stats, but I keep it in use due to ponderous (which is insignifical in terms of surviving with Chei's naga, but push some additional slouch damage), and MR. Am I right?

And going for slouch and other stuff, does Invocation helps for Chei's abilyties quality, or only affects their success chance?

Also I've found tons of polearms in Snake Pit, and have a numerous books. I'm without spellcasting right now but could get level or two for enchantments on raw weapon, and currently have access to fire, freezing, poison and negative. Which combination suits better for mid/late game?

lajatang are nice weapon and vampiric is probably the best brand in normal game. I don't know your AC/EV and what skill level has your character - if you feel you can spare some exp, switching to the lajatang could be a good idea, even if you are in mid-game. Btw, what are you doing in Slimes Pit? You still have vault and Dungeon to clear, and both places are generally easier than pit - furthermore you can't get any loot here (expect vault in pit:6)!

Trident are one and a half handed weapon, which means they get horrible penalties if used with shield and not enough skill - The penalty with 0 shield skill is 1..1/3/5 to to-hit, damage and speed for bucklers/normal/large shields, respectively - you totally don't want to wear that shield. If you don't switch to that lajatang, find a buckler and start to train shield asap; however, considering you have already 21 in polearms, it would better to grab a glaive while still training polearms to reach min delay with a bardiche.

About the hat of pondering: while +30MR is really nice, ponderous brand isn't really important for a naga of chei. He is already the slowest creature (at max piety) in all the multiuniverse, slouch's damage doesn't change a lot wearing that hat. Anyway, you shouldn't overlook +10mp and +5 int: together with the +15int bonus of chei, it's easy for a naga to cast high-level spell even in heavy armour.
For example, you should be able to cast, with a bit of training and a ring of wizardry, controlled blink, which is really really really useful for a chei-user. Even c-tele + blink would be better than moving around the battle field at 2.8 base speed, in most situation.

Finally, invo skill affect bend time success rate and the probability the enemies will go to sleep using step from time - two good effects but not really game-breaking. I'd suggest to invest in other skills, rather than pump invo: what you only need is to have a good success rate (under 10%) with step from time, because it's a panic ability and you really want it succeeds when you need it - 10-12 invo should be enough.

Just being nitpicky, but "multiuniverse" doesn't make sense, since you're saying "many-one-planes of existences" the term you're looking for is "multiverse" which is the term for "many planes of existences"

With 21 in polearms I would drop the shield and the trident and switch to a glavie (and keep training it till 26 skill). A glavie is a very good weapon. The lajatang is nice but not something I would change, and it does not have reaching, and has worse damage than a glavie. Reaching is really good for Chei.

I think invocation does not increases slouch damage. I'd definitely train invo till step from time is at a very high success rate (99% maybe).

If you have access to controlled blink from the books that's something you want to cast soon. It lets you position yourself with Chei.

These kind of questions are usually better to ask in the YASP/YASD/CIP forum. You should post your morgue file there (link or between code tags) - better players can give you better advice then.

I think, it's too straightforward character for CiP topic, just want to make some small question clear as it is better progress I've ever made.

The biggest mistake I made is char has no other panic button than Chei's abilyties, since I've not found a book with tele (should check shops, maybe I miss it). Also magic means I should remove a AC+4, Dex+4 ring which looks nice but maybe isn't so important.

Ok, I moved into vaults and thend deal with Pit:5, and it not really looks like I have spare exp, so I would stick with 2-h polearms.

I have great mR and pR, and found Pits pretty easy, except the last floor. There I've drop to *** in piety from max, cause of those great nagas. Anyway, they are much less deadly for my char than centaurs or yaktaurs pack encountered in the middle of Vaults level. Of course I have slouch for them, but it drop piety pretty quick when abused.

You have 32 int and 35 dex, yet have 0 spells and 0 dodging. You aren't playing to your character's strengths. Here's what I would do in your position:

First thing's first: Turn off traps and doors. Don't train armour any more. Train dodging, ditch that ring mail, and look for mottled dragon armour, rF leather, or a robe of resistance.

Ditch that -cast ring, and start learning spells. Get apport/blink/cblink/ctele when you can, also keep a look out for regeneration, flight, repel missiles, phase shift. You could also branch into ice magic and learn things like ozo's armour, bolt of cold, and freezing cloud.

Get a bardiche ASAP. Use all your enchant scrolls on it, and vorpalise it with freeze or flame. Turn off polearms at 26.

Don't forget that you can use CTRL + f to find stuff in-game (that bardiche eeviac mentions above sounds like the first candidate). It's a nice tool for looking through stashes for artifacts you might have missed and stuff.

God bless the synthesis. I probably used 4000 more words to say the same things.
Nevertheless, I'll add some other advices :D : turn off fighting for a bit if you start training magic schools, 16 and 195hp by level 20, it's a little excessive.
Ring mail is a shitty base armour type, never use it unless it's a really awesome randart - or you can't improbably find any other source of a good property, like rf+ or MR.
Uncannily resistant to hostile enchantments is a a total overkill - despite being MR being very important , it's better to strengthen some other point of your character at this point. Probably you could still have a good MR switching to a rf+ armour and swapping the MR ring with something better (like regeneration).
Drop that amulet of faith, if you have found a better amulet (conservation, other randart). Yes, slouch is very good and cost a lot of piety, but you can get it back very quickly so faith isn't really necessary to have.
