Some pointers to a new player

Hi everyone!

Been enjoying this game for a while now learning how to play it. As seems recommended I went for MiBe as starting character and with a bit of luck managed to stay alive. I feel quite powerful but I feel a bit lost for direction. I’m going for a 3 rune win and about to head down into Shoals.

Any pointers as to my skilling, items, history is very much welcome but a few things i was wondering about is:

1. I have decided to go for shields instead of two-handed weapon as defense seems better than offense especially for an unexperienced player. You agree? I could potentially go for the exec axe.

2. My defensive skilling, should I focus evenly on armour, dodge, shields?

3. Should I go for the large shield?

4. Evocations, should I train it more? Should I run around with all the evocationable items i do? I’m lost for a strategy with my evocable items. For example wand of fire does not seem to do much and my throwing is probably better in almost all situations? Can I count on my items to work with the amount of evocation i have?

5. The scrolls of enchant armour and weapons… use or save?

6. The antimagic weapon, i could potentially get that to +9 but it seems more like a situational weapon.

7. Pain weapons are not for me due to the fact that i have no other need for necromancy right?

8. If I can decide when to engage a dangerous magic caster would it be a good strategy to equip the +3 leather armour of Jetacy Qorr {+Inv rF- rC++ Stlth+}, equip the antimagic weapon, go invisible, get close and chop away?

9. What should I carry around, the ring of flying or the scrolls of flying? Do I need to escape by flying?

10. I’ve decided not to carry around a blowgun and all kinds of different needles, should i prioritize carrying those items?

Re: Some pointers to a new player

speaking only from my own experience:

1. Shields are good. You can also win with a 2-handed weapon, but I find shields easier.
2. I would usually focus on AC & SH. Shield skill is more important when your skills are generally below 15, armour skill is generally more important after that point, when you wear armour with high natural AC.
3. Large shields are often good, though beware they slightly reduce EV, attacking power (and spell success). Shields of reflection are really convenient (and fun), particularly in shoals, vaults, and depths, so I'd stick with the +2 shield of reflection for now.
4. Evocations is really good, but itraining throwing and evocations might not be optimal. For one thing you'll run out of inventory space.
5. Honestly it doesn't matter whether you use or save your enchantment scrolls. Your minotaur could win the game without using any enchant scrolls ever. I like having optimal gear eventually, such as maximally enchanted ego large shields, ego gloves, ego hats, gold dragon scales, and broad axes, etc. So I tend to save my scrolls until I find those. Weaker characters may run into situations where they can't safely progress without using enchantment scrolls. Consider enchanting your shield of reflection & anti-magic broad axe; those are your best items at the moment. (though if you wait long enough, Trog may gift you a +6 antimagic broad axe )
6. Beware of chaos! It's true, often a broadaxe of freezing/fire will be better than a broadaxe of antimagic. Any broadaxe is pretty good though. Also, a antimagic broadaxe is a end-game weapon, because it makes fights with some of the toughest monsters easier.
7. Yes
8. Sometimes. I probably wouldn't bother. Beware some monsters see invis. This strategy would be a lot better if you had some stealth, without stealth the monster will still know where you are. In almost all situations, the antimagic weapon will be good enough, even without invis. Just use luring to get adjacent. If it can't blink, go berserk. No need to put points into stealth. If a fight isn't safe and you can choose when to engage, level up a bit before engaging until it is safe.
9. Doesn't matter. I like rings, because they're cheaper to use. Mostly, flying is useful to get loot from vaults, and to avoid water penalties in Shoals. If you need to use flying to escape and you weren't expecting it, you weren't playing carefully enough. The main disadvantage of the ring is that you can get badly drained if you overestimate how far you can fly; you can still chuck potions of flight whilst you're flying, but can't evoke the ring.
10. You can get by perfectly fine without the blow gun.

Re: Some pointers to a new player

About scrolls of enchantment, I generally enchant my helmet, gloves, cloak, and boots as soon as I can. When I find a good body armour I expect to keep until the end of the game, I enchant that one.

Wands of fire are good with water. They raise clouds of steam, which damage enemies without rF, and block sight. Otherwise, I almost never use them.

Flying is rarely useful. ATM I think that the potions would be more reliable for you. Until you run out of inventory space, you can carry both.

Re: Some pointers to a new player

Some general comments.

On 1h vs 2h:

I'd use the shield. In general I prefer 1h + shield, but it mostly depends on weather you can find a quality 1h weapon early (broad axe, demon weapon, double blade, eveningstar, etc) and species (large species - naga, ogre, troll have a large incentive to use a large shield).

On armour vs dodge:

It looks like this character will wear chain, plate, or gold dragon armour so I'd recommend training mostly armour (and get shields to 15).

On chaos:

I'd advise against using this brand. In general, the chaos brand tends to give a net positive amount of effects, but the negative effects on dangerous threats (duplicating the enemy, hasting it, etc) can easily kill you.

On antimagic:

Many times a standard +damage brand (freezing, flaming, etc) can be better. But antimagic is still worth using against things that cast spells that are generally more dangerous than other monsters. I'd enchant that broadaxe on use it - it's good enough to win the game with.

On evocations:

Training evocations is good, and ultimately how much you decide to train it depends on what else you need to get online. I generally get at least 5-7 evo on all character. On melee characters like berserkers this number is higher. On casters, it's lower.

On flight potions:

I'd recommend keeping on you for Shoals (when you feel like you can spend time evoking flight) and a potential trip to be abyss. If you need inventory space, I'd drop all non-axe weapons and armour you aren't wearing. If you need them later, you can pick them up.

On shoals:

Be pretty careful in this area as it can kill you pretty easily. It's the hardest lair branch. The main concerns are things that attack you at range (casters and archers) and mesmerize which prevent you from retreating. To break mesmerize, you can defensively trog's hand, kill the mesmerizer or use a wand of flame on water or a scroll of fog to break line of sight. Make use of your ring of flight to avoid fighting in water as well. Good luck.

Re: Some pointers to a new player

1. Use a shield
2. Fighting Armour Shields Dodging (prioritize in that order, take what is cheapest, less dodging if dex is very low)
3. Keep the +2 reflect medium shield unless you find a branded large shield. Shield skill past 15 is a lower priority than other stuff.
4. Only train evocables to 6-9 and don't carry them all around, just the more useful ones (lamp, clouds, digging, iceblast, acid, maybe paralyze) Higher evocation skill training only makes sense when xp is more plentiful in extended at which point bags of spiders and boxes of beasts become useful.
5. Save enchant armour for better armour than chain (gold dragon, storm dragon, etc. depending on what you need) You have an artefact broadaxe, so save your enchant weapon scrolls for in case you find a different good broad axe brand (holy, vampiric, freezing. etc.) By the way, the chaos axe is bad, because it's likely to get you killed eventually.
6. If you aren't casting any spells, a +9 antimagic broad axe is a good option because it will help neutralize a lot of the most dangerous monsters. It's also nice to have as an optional weapon, very good for extended bosses.
7. You don't need pain weapons
8. It's better to wear your heavier armour, lure, hide around a corner so you can hack it as soon as it comes around the corner. Chop away with the antimagic axe for sure.
9. Depends how much flying you need. I usually don't bother carrying rings of flying (I stick them in a stash) because I prefer potions of flying. The reason is that they are better in tight situations where time matters.
10. Blowguns are only helpful very early game. Poison needles were nerfed to require throwing skill to do much. Curare are more useful longer, but still I don't generally pack blowguns and needles around much. It's usually better to focus on higher melee skills and lure stuff than it is to spend xp on throwing/ranged. You can make use of needles and throwing and all that late game, but I find it just generally isn't needed.. and it does detract from your skill in more important areas. The one exception is if you find an artefact crossbow with penetration brand, this is worth training.

Re: Some pointers to a new player

Thanks guys for all your comments!

I will stop using my “trusted” chaos axe and enchant my antimagic one to +9.

Defensively I will get shields to 15 and then focus primarily on armour and some dodging if much cheaper cost than armour.

I will enchant my shield of reflection and wait for some better body armour.

I think I will have to do some testing to get to a better understanding of all the evokables.

Re: Some pointers to a new player

1. Any kind of weapon can win you the game, especially 3-rune. Only reason to choose one over the other is if you find a really exceptional artefact weapon you want to use.

3. Only if you're close to the skill level required for removing the penalty.

4. Evocations are fantastic and many evocable items can be life savers. However, not all evocable items are good. Wand of fire is crap. Wand of Iceblast is decent for crowd control. Wand of clouds is an "I win" button in many situations. Lamp of fire is fantastic. Wand of acid is fantastic, it can take down Pan lords. Wand of digging is a utility or an escape tool. Wand of Polymorph is too risky. Wand of random effects is not useful in dangerous situations. With experience, you'll learn which ones are worth keeping.

5. I usually save enchant scrolls for the top tier weapon I plan to use for the rest of the game. For example, if I'm doing maces, that's either a demon whip or evening star with a good brand. Same with armor. For a heavy fighter, that's most often Gold dragon armor.

6. I'd rather have a brand like flaming. But if you don't happen to find a good brand (or brand weapon scrolls), don't worry about using up your enchantment on an antimagic weapon. It will get you through the game just fine.

7. Right.

8. IMO strategy of changing into a drastically different armor for an individual monster is a dangerous one. Changing armor takes a lot of time. If you need specific resistances, rather get them by changing your jewelry.

9. Either one. Scrolls of flying can be read in combat without time loss as an escape mechanism, so stash your ring until you use up scrolls of flying, which will probably be never.

10. I never used blowguns simply because it would be an inventory management nightmare. For my ranged attacks, I go for throwing + evocations. Or alternatively, slings instead of throwing if I find a particularly good sling.

Re: Some pointers to a new player

Wand of flame is pretty useful for swamp/shoals, it breaks LoS on mesmerize/blocks worms from seeing you to hook and thanks to resulting steam the damage is actually decent. Not bad for getting rid of merfolk avatars running off into deep water or killing water nymphs, even on ~10 evo. I usually dump them after that.

Wand of acid is one of the only evocation options that can damage orbs of fire. Since it also corrodes them, they help out a bit with melee followup too.

Blowguns are only helpful very early game.

Blowguns can trivialize fights like Tiamat, Mara, and Pan/hell lords with enchantment + throwing trained. At relatively high values of throwing even plain tomahawks become a respectable ranged tool, with javelins being excellent. If you have access to blink you can often hoard throwing nets and abuse those vs some dangerous stuff too. I don't often run blowguns because they compete with primary weapon for enchants, but sometimes you get a good artifact weapon early enough that enchanting the blowgun is a viable and possibly optimal way to spend enchant weapon scrolls (Say you get an artifact demon whip while training M&F from acquirement or Oka and are training throwing anyway).

The major downsides to throwing are the limited ammo and inventory annoyance. The latter is QoL rather than gameplay. As long as you're not spamming throwing implements vs popcorn it serves well all game long. Also throwing + Oka finesse is pretty ridiculous.

Re: Some pointers to a new player

Blowgun is so good because status needles check HD instead of MR with a favorable formula and works on Natural and Demonic holiness, rP be damned.
Applying drain and malmutation can help with landing both MR and HD check.
