Lair:5 instakill to some wall?? no warning?

So i was hapilly walking some day in Lair, and i found a corpse in some green wall. And while i went for meat i got instakilled. No sorry no aloha no warning.
How is that balanced? i even had corrosion ring. Why these walls killed me?

I believe you are supposed to read messages, you started being damaged immediately when adjacent to a slimy wall.
I don't read messages normally either though.

Use the hp_warning option to help you notice when you are low on health. Something like 60 is a good value.

i pressed left mouse click on corpse to loot meat, and ... next thing i saw was

There was a portal to Slimes with green walls next to corpse.

Like... who invented that green wall in Lair:5?

If this can indeed happen it's a problem, but I'm having some trouble replicating it. What should have happened is that the slime walls set an exclusion, and you can't click to autotravel into the exclusion. I've checked that this works for this vault in trunk, at least, and don't see any changes that would affect this since 0.20.1. With excluded spaces you can only click to travel one square at a time. With 113 health and rcorr it should take on the order of 20-30 turns adjacent to slime walls to kill you.

Also, it's not very visible from the morgue but that vault is mostly stone, so it's actually pretty hard to accidentally come into contact with slime walls there; the position shown in the morgue is adjacent to exactly 1 slime wall, and the path in there doesn't touch any, so it's again hard for me to figure out how this could happen accidentally even with click-to-travel:

Can you provide some more information about what exactly you did and what happened? Do you have anything custom in your rc file that might affect exclusions, such as custom autotravel macros? Did you clear any exclusions? Do you have any macros that use . repeatedly? (5 next to a slime wall won't work.)

Edit: I should add that I don't ask this to be skeptical, in the morgue I don't see turn markers for the last turns, and from the log I can see at least two turns adjacent to slime walls, so something is weird. But I can't yet figure out how to get this behavior to happen on a default configuration.

I haven't been playing in client for ages and I tend to use keyboard commands for grabbing stuff anyway, so not sure but...

Are you certain left click is set up to do exactly what you think? Could it perhaps be set to chop the corpses?

Actually, I'm not sure if you can actually pick up a corpse anymore without chopping it, and some corpses like yaks generate a LOT of chunks -- perhaps these put you on track to stand there working for a long time?

Just a guess. I'm not honestly sure exactly how much time chopping into multiple chunks takes. The wiki is actually confusing me more. The Corpse page says,
Corpses can be butchered (command c) into edible chunks of raw flesh. This process takes 5 turns, during which time enemies may attack you, though you'll be asked if you want to stop butchering when an enemy is spotted. Any butchering progress you made toward the 5 turns before your cancellation will remain...

But the "satiation" page (which I never ever would have guessed is formally called that; thank you smart redirects) says under "Chunks of flesh":
Butchering a corpse or bottling its blood always take one turn (10 auts).

Also not sure if either of those pages is close enough to up to date; the Satiation one says it was up to around 0.18.

So I dunno... But I wonder! :geek:

From what I understand, butchering a corpse to whatever number of chunks was shortened to just 1 turn some versions ago. So the first wiki-entry is outdated, and the second has it right. This is apparently not the reason that has caused this death, in version 20.1.

Is it possible that rCorr deactivated the Y/N? Notice that he had both a ring of rCorr and an artifact shield with rCorr on.

Or it could be the clicking: recently I randomly clicked on the screen and (happy chance!) I clicked on the runed door to the Hall of Blades. I got no Y/N. I'd need to check again though.

EDIT: As you probably have noticed, runed doors don't have a Y/N, and so this post doesn't really make much sense.

slime portal green one was in a corridor like place.
corpse was in corner, touching 2 green walls .. there was a lot of green clouds
it was a corpse of sheep because i saw it going there confused. i though that it hit a wall and died so i clicked on corpse.

probably not needed but not obscuring my gameplay so i did not bothered to edit it again.
i set warning OFF as i was pissed of at red HP bar that prevented me from seeing real hp recent loss

imo red hp bar when critical HP is very unclear to use. that color should be switched to some other.
when i get damage i see my loss(red) and remaining HP (also red) :)

other game i played i went near that green wall again and it hardly damaged me. maybe butchering is like "vulnerability" action and damage is strongly amplified?

I don't think butchering increases the damage you take while you do it - and you can see in the morgue the last hit was for 4 damage, so you should have been taking roughly 4 damage a turn, which sounds about right for being next to only one wall with rCorr. The damage can get high if you're around a lot of walls without rCorr, but this should take a very long time to die in this situation (20+turns). I'm not sure how that much time passed without you noticing the walls were hitting you.

It looks like his rc is set to keep trying to butcher a corpse as long as there is one under his feet and no monsters are in sight, i think if you start butchering a corpse and take damage, you are interrupted and dont finish.

So i suspect it went:

1. We have a corpse at our feet and no monsters are in sight, auto butcher it.
2. We took damage, butchering was interrupted, since we didnt finish butchering, the corpse is still here and we didnt get any chunks.
3. Go to 1.

Siegurt's description is correct; chopping is interrupted by the slime damage and never finishes, but the `if` in `ready` triggers immediately (until the corpse goes away, but usually the player dies first). In trunk I've changed `you.feel_safe` to return false if you're standing next to a slime wall, I think it is reasonable to assume it would. But for the record, I suspect there are other ways to get this auto butchering script to loop infinitely (even if they don't involve damage) and I highly recommend not using it. (If you must, you could try to add a guard based on position or something.) Consider auto_butcher=true.

(Also, FWIW if you hit this bad loop on a configuration that doesn't have every safety setting in crawl disabled, it flashes red and goes slower, so it's quite obvious that something bad is happening, and probably interruptible in time if you're paying attention.)
