Ogre armor choices?

I have had varying success playing Ogres, but they all struggle greatly with defences... Now that they changed how ozos armor works and removed stone skin, getting AC up early game is even harder.

In my latest game I have got a +1 Steam DA, which is nice to have now, but might not be worth the scrolls in the long run. Still, I need to focus on "now" and not "then".

What would be the ideal armor for an Ogre? What would be the best realistic to get armor? How should I approach the defence issue anyway?

Has anyone ever found an endgame quality animal skinn ever? Aquiring armor gave me one, was not dissapointed, since my expectations were low...

Ideal is pearl dragon armour. In practice you are going to end up with mottled/steam/fire/ice dragon armour, troll leather, or just a robe.
You should almost never save enchant armour scrolls.

Ogres can cast spells to some extent and they really help you survive. And even if they can not dodge well, I would not throw away that little ev I have.

Getting a GDA is much easier than PDA though, so GDA might be an option.

That argument might be persuasive if we were talking about trolls and not ogres.

Swamp dragon armour can be pretty good, but you'll only find one if swamp is in your game.

Also quicksilver dragon armour may be worth swapping to later as you only need to use 1 scroll on it.

You pretty much always want dodging on troll/ogre, because you don't start the game with an armour where training armour makes sense and it's really bad to not train defenses. Then by the time you find a dragon armour the lighter ones end up being better imo.

I also remembered why I used Steam DA on one of my more successfull Ogre IEs. It allows Ozos to be used. How ever the pondering change to that spell makes me hesitate to use it.

Also on the topic of EV. If I worship dith, the umbra gives -Acc to monsters, so how does that affect the low numbers of EV? I would assume that would make +1 ev matter even more than usually. I'm under the impression that +1EV has more impact the lower your EV score is and becomes less meaningfull when you are over the 20s.

For a TROLL I'd say no armour, use statue form or dragon form (since you are UC anyways taking up Tmut is a good move). With Ogre's whole -2* UC and 3! Maces I wouldn't necessarily do that. :P

Anyways, in my book due to your generally low defenses for much of the game Large Shield + Morning/Eveningstar or Demon Whip is better than the 2H G(S)C; it also has the luxury of NOT taking insanely high skill to get to mindelay. And a Shield (especially if you find one with rF+ or AC+3) is a significant help in your defenses.

As for armour: Early game, make a Steam Dragon if you kill a Steam Dragon (and that can be your permanent armour); otherwise stick to robe or troll leather.

Late game...yea, don't hold off until Holy Pan and try to get a PDA (Since they virtually don't exist outside of that one floor of Pandemonium and that floor is really hard). But my personal choice because of high Og STR is Shadow Dragon. The stealth really helps in extended. Though anything Shadow and Storm or lighter is fine; FDA/IDA in particular can help with holes in your elemental defenses. If you're trying to get level 9 spells online though, stick to steam/robe or take a lighter dragon like mottled, Swamp, etc.

I would almost never recommend GDA, the STR requirement to not make your EV nothing is stupidly high and unless you are with Chei you just can't cast in it, period.

+3 apt needs you don't need "insane" investment to mindelay a G(S)C, and they're a bit more common than eveningstars and demon whips.

I did play a shield ogre once. Found a dwhip of vamp in Lair. That was pretty fun (hold tab, everything dies), but I still went GSC for postend.

You can also dip zig and hope for a holy floor at the 5-10 range.

Ogres and trolls generally just want the first dragon armor that comes available. Randart dragon armors are rare, and the classes need defenses too much to wait. Committing early is better than finding the perfect fit.

Why not just start OgFi then? The shield gives you extra defenses early, the flail is a good starting weapon, you get a potion of might for emergencies, the armour skill becomes Dodging. You can ditch the shield later when M&F gets good enough for GSC and when a nice armor shows up. Even training Shields a few levels, that's a drop in the bucket later on. Seems to me Fighter gets you through the early levels the safest. What am I missing?

You gave up starting with Trog or throwing early large rocks (defenses don't matter if they enemy can't hit you).

ogfi should start the game with a poop dragon armour which is the same as a scale mail but it's re flavored to be the hide from a poop dragon they killed right outside the dungon

Got me a steam dragon hide. 1 ?EA I saved just for the purpose. Went thru at least four mottled dragons but no hides. Now normally I would hit this immediately, but now Ive got a +2 robe of MR, no other sources of MR, and +11 (!) AC in rings. Thinking of holding off just yet...

What is the best armour for an OgWz, and if its PDA, whats the next best? Ive also got a +6 GSC of freezing, so most of my fights go "conjure flame, sticky flame, whomp whomp rest"

A +2 MR robe is pretty good, especially with +11 AC from jewelry. I'd probably enchant the cloak and wear the robe for now.
