Surviving after lair and orc?

I keep finding myself die after finishing Lair and Orc. I normally get one or two runes then die. Once I get into the rune branches the fights seam to be a lot of close to death encounters and the odds are that at some time I will die. It always seams like I'm under powered and can't hardly do damage and run from most fights with no HP or MP. In my last game it took me hours just to clear shoals 4 alone. Constantly running for stairs or not even being able to move one step away from stairs. I go down and have to go right back up to avoid death.

What should be the focus to be able to reliably survive in the branches.

I look around for tactic guides and most of what I read isn't understandable to me.

Spread out your time between the branches. If something nasty is found in swamp, go do dungeon. If you see Nikolai in D, go do spider for a while. Keep in mind that branch ends are way harder then the floors above them. Carefully clear elf1 at some point, especially if you want a runed armor or something. In general be more slow and cautious in difficult areas. Pull monsters back toward explored areas one at a time, explore in such a way that one thing wondering out of the fog won't block your escape. Get your stuff identified, and use any ?acquirement. Buy anything useful with your Orc money.

Also, it depends on what type of character you are running, so maybe post that.

Once you die you can't make char. dumps. I'm not in the habit of making them every few minutes and then saving the text to a file. Is there and option to have one sent to and email or something when dead?

THe first major influx of XP is Lair. The second is vaults. Plan accordingly.

Have a plan for what you are going to get to work for S branches. Get that thing online before D15. Put the rest of your XP into defenses.

Have a plan for what you are going to get online for vaults. Get that thing online before your second sbranch rune. Then put the rest of your XP into defenses.

If the dungeon floor isn't kind (or even if it is), burn through consumables on modestly difficult fights, hoping the dungeon will be kinder in the future.

This is my last death. I just couldn't do anything to survive. Flee one battle to heal and alligator pops out of no where. Couldn't heal, tried to blink away and that failed so just wasted a turn. What should I have done? Train Dodge like crasy but it doesn't do hardly anything. How do you gain the power to survive? If I just train attack I get hit by everything and die and if a I train defense I can't kill anything. All kinds of stuff in inventory but can't figure out how any of it would help.

The scroll of fear might have bought you some time to teleport away. I think more of an issue is how little MP you had. It was a big step for my in my development to view 50% HP as an emergency, and it took longer to see MP as the same way. You may have needed to flee the previous battle sooner, so that you had some margin of error should you get interrupted while resting.

In terms of strategic advice, I wouldn't go heavily into bows on a caster, and your low bow investment (skill 4) isn't really all that much to make it worthwhile to carry one + ammo around. Did no bucklers spawn? You'd be better off getting 5 skill in shields and wearing a buckler. Not the best defense, but a small improvement for little exp is worth it, especially if you have an ego.

And your melee weapon skill should probably be slightly higher, so that by this point it's a semi-reasonable option. When you're out of mana, you just might have to use it. Although the better option is to watch your mana closely and not get into a situation where you're out/low on mana, as MainiacJoe said.

Don't train magic skills after D:2 on a GrEE.

Find a mace or other good melee weapon and train up that and fighting. You can keep using your spells, just don't waste xp on them. Once your weapon is kicking butt, pick up some good armor and train that and don't worry about spells any more.

Also, you had too much Invocations for that early.

When the shield penalty is eliminated depends on the character. I don't know all of the factors these days, but size matters, at least.

Sprucery is correct about the skill needed to remove the EV penalty from bucklers in trunk for normal-sized races.

@OP: There were a few things that could have helped you there, like the scroll of fear, but the main issue was that you ran out of your primary resources (hp and mp) in a dangerous area. As ManiacJoe said, it would help to assume you're in deep trouble when you go below a certain moderate level of resources and start taking extreme measures at that time.
