If you're fighting a tough enemy, you can press the tab key more quickly to try to increase your attack speed. If the enemy has high AC, hit the tab key more forcefully to try to get higher damage. Likewise, if running away and taking ranged hits, press the arrow key frantically to try and run faster. All of these techniques help to streamline the crawl experience and finish your current run quickly.

Use ?acquire for gold. You can never have enough gold.

Enemies with a nasty attack probably wont use it. And if they do then they certainly wont spam it like you would in a similar situation.

There are only a handful of viable gods, regardless of the type of character. Oka, TSO, Zin, Trog will fit anything.

If an axe user make sure to barrel about noisily to leverage the cleave, anytime you are hitting one enemy you are doing it wrong. By this logic all other weapon skills suck and are mainly there for flavor.

Focus like a laserbeam, melee or magic, not both. Plus wands is totally a wizard thing, didnt see Conan with a wand of cold right? A background is for life. If you start as a wizard then you should only ever cast, fighters should never cast. Oh, and the other backgrounds are flavour and suck besides those two.

Remember everything you have ever learned about RPGs when coming to Crawl. Recreate your favorite WoW Tank or Mage or whatever, it'll all just come together and work just like you remember.

While you can examine enemies to see what sort of weapons they carry this just makes everything take longer and wont impact the fights anyway.

Qazlal is a joke god, don't worship him. All the noise he makes will draw tons of monsters on later floors that will inevitably overwhelm you, and his powers are made obsolete by mid-level Conjurations or a branded bow.

Likewise, Disc of Storms is a joke item that hurts you just as much as monsters when you use it in addition to making a ton of noise. Don't mess around with it.

Don't mess around with the "fakelang" option in your rc. Replacing random words will obscure what you're doing and make things hard to understand, and "butt" is just never funny. The point of playing games is to be as serious and focused as possible, not giggle over random silliness.

Always switch to TSO for extended from Okawaru/Trog, they are too weak there.

Never learn Necromutation, it is a trap, it is too expensive and prevents you from casting Death's Door and Borgnjor's Revivification.

No, no. That might encourage them to "explain" you why you are wrong and it is a complete waste of time: there is nothing to learn in crawl, it is almost "pure luck based" game, only chess is more luck-based.

Edit. And nobody told the most important thing to master crawl - be patient/insistent. If you died on D2 trying to melee an Ogre, you were killed by bad luck. Don't change your tactics, keep doing that and you will win soon.

Eh, better safe than sorry. A better badvice would be "Panlords will be no problem, just tab through them" (they are usually not a problem if you hastewalk or tele to the exit, but in a fight some can be trouble even to Zot chars).

I must have come across 10 pan lords on my orb run (3 at a time at one point, 2 of them very fast and fire resistant and one with LRD - couldn't get out of LOS from them plus accompanying pack of demons (including a brimstone fiend) and didn't have time to shaft - very nearly died. If I'd skill-transferred to long blades from axes before I lost sufficient piety from swapping over my amulet of faith and gone with a GS of HW instead of a BA of flaming, I could have mullered them much more easily. Good job I'd stockpiled ?HW...

I was speccing busb in extended and he used disint on himself vs Eresh instead of tele when he was almost dead. He did the same thing in the second fight.

During the ascension I dared him to disint himself as low as possible before he won.
