MDDK noob advice, help me survive

I've taken a liking to MDDK's, i like the heavy armor, hard hitting side of the MD and I like the panic button of mirror and crowd control of drain life that i get with DK. I don't normally make it deep enough to worry about when and how to utilize enslave soul. That and having an army of minions is just fun. I've gotten deeper than I've ever made it before so now I have no idea what to do next. So I come to you, the almighty and all knowing forum people for advice. Here's the dump.

The tl;dr summary: lvl 13, down to snake 3, known locations of orc, elf, lair, snake, shoals, and hive, fan of mace and shield, picked up a mutation that makes me immune to pois

So here's what I'm thinking, feel free to call me crazy and point out what I'm doing wrong.
-16 is high enough for any 1h mace type so I can turn that off
-snake should be the easiest to finish, but I dont know if I'm strong enough for that yet
-i'm thinking about diving a floor or two into elf looking for some equipment
-i know rPois is good for hive, but how much deeper is it useful? (is it worth clearing my mutations to get back armor effectiveness at the cost of rPois after hive?)
-I'm going with the amulet of faith to keep myself at the higher end of Yred's minion gift list, flying skulls just get in the way
-What spells should I be looking for since I just hit spellcasting 1/what branches of magic are most helpful, even with my poor apts?
-Given those aforementioned poor apts to the magics, should I even worry about magic at all?
-What other important aspects of either MD or DK am I missing?

It looks like you're doing pretty well to me. Snake up to 4, finishing Lair and Orc, and finding the entrance to Vaults are probably the next softest targets for you. Orc 4 will probably be the most lucrative because of the guaranteed shops, but there can be some pretty dangerous stuff down there so make sure you keep your posse close to you. Alternately, you can keep them on Orc 3, pick off individual orc stragglers, and when a knight chases you to the stairwell you bring your posse back down to fight it honorably, by which I mean 25 against 1.

You'll probably want to train up your slings skill, since it's a pretty solid ranged option that doesn't get penalized by your use of a shield.

Shoals 1-4 will be feasible once you've found a reusable form of levitation. The monsters are probably manageable already as long as you give javelineers, alligator snapping turtles, krakens, etc. the proper respect, but you simply can't navigate down there unless you can cross water. Slime will not be feasible anytime soon.

Yeah, it's more than high enough now. That said, you can probably do better than an unbranded +2 morningstar. Ultimately you'll want a demon whip, of course, but you can probably find a decent one that's also branded in Orc somewhere. The +X isn't very important; you just need a good base type and preferably a decent brand.

Snake 5 will probably be worse than Lair 8 or Orc 4. The Rune vault will have many, many top-end naga, and lots of anaconda and black mamba as well. It's actually pretty standard procedure to leave Snake 5/Shoals 5/Swamp 5 until after you've already cleared Vaults 1-7 and Elf 1-4, since branch ends are so much harder than the branch leading up to them.1

I can't really recommend this. Elf casters have much nastier spell lists compared to orc casters, including Paralyze, Crystal Spear, and Banishment, and you don't have much in the way of magic resistance or pips of elemental resistance yet. More importantly, elves tend to have light armor, swords, and bows, none of which are likely to be of interest to you. Shops and portal vaults are possible, but they are possible in the main dungeon too which is likely to be safer for now. A quick dip into Elf is usually good for one of their bucklers, but you already have a superior shield.

Poison resistance never stops being useful, but it's fine to switch jewelry when you need it. I don't know I'd ever use a cure mutation potion on deformed body, though. It dings your AC, but if you use cure mutation now you won't have it when you get hit with teleportitis, berserkitis, slow movement, or one of the other really catastrophic mutations.

Faith is one of the best amulets, up until you are forced to start switching at which point it instantly becomes useless. Much later you'll need to switch conditionally depending on the threat, but that's not really relevant now, so enjoy it while you can. The only one likely to be as good early on is gourmand, and maybe not even that one.

You have heavy armor, so unless you're willing to swap down to dragon armor you might as well not bother with magic. Evocations is the best you can do, so hope for some good rods to work with. Might be worth using a scroll of acquirement on one, since they're rare. You can get stuff like Freezing Cloud, Deflect Missiles, or Abjuration from a rod if you're lucky enough.

If you absolutely must try out magic on a heavy-armor character, stick to a single school that has useful low-level spells. Probably either charms (Repel Missiles, Swiftness) or translocations (Apportation, Blink).

I made the fatal mistake of not wanting to ditch my undead army on Orc4 when things got packed after opening a door and finding a stack of high level orc spell slingers and getting mobbed by summoned things. Lesson learned: It's ok to run away from your army to live to fight another day.
If at first you don't succeed, throw more bodies at the problem.
