Need Advice

I started playing not very long ago and I found that I enjoy running monks a lot. I've got a couple of questions about them though.

1) I tend to focus on leveling UC until lvl 10, then split it between UC, dodge, and invocation if I've got a god that requires it. Is this a good idea or should I diversify it more?

2)What gods are advisable for a monk?

3) I really like the stats that Cheibriados gives and I like his skills. Can I have some advise on running a character with him?

Re: Need Advice

1) It's optimal to train one skill at a time unless you are training magic schools for spell which uses several magic schools.
2) Okawaru, Makhleb, Fedhas, Trog
3) I think you will get advice "Don't use Chei ;)" He is best with ranged attack/spells, though it's doable to win with TrXX of Chei with large rocks as the only source of ranged attacks.

Re: Need Advice

1) Based on https://crawl.develz.org/tavern/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11099, 11 UC is exactly as effective as wielding a +0/+0 quarterstaff with 14 quarterstaff skill, which is to say that it's a decent place to put your offense before branching into other skills. 10 is slightly worse, but probably not significantly. I would generally be inclined to get Dodging to a reasonable level before going back to UC or starting Invo, but your mileage may vary.

2) Nemelex, Fedhas, Kiku, Yred and Makhleb are all very powerful (as they are for most characters). Ash and Trog are a little worse than for other characters, since you won't be wielding a weapon. Okawaru's Heroism is very strong with UC. Vehumet can allow you to branch into conjurations as a second line of offense, but both conjurations and UC are XP-greedy.

3) Chei works best when you have a full-LOS form of attack, since he makes approaching enemies very painful. Chei is far from the best choice you could make, but if you go Chei, make careful use of its invocations to manage space, and position yourself with incredible care.

1) Overall good idea, usual strategy says "Have a way to kill first, improve defenses then". Training some fighting can help too
2) Oka is great for Heroism UC boost. Finesse is also great and you'll want only about 8 Invo to be fine. You may like Fedhas and Nemelex
3) Chei is often considered as a bad/hard-to-play God, even if some players (like me !) really like him ! I really feel like you shouldn't start with him in your first games. Maybe wait to have some wins

Edit : multi ninja'd, but we say almost the same things

Thanks guys. Also, Str vs Dex for UC? I was under the impression that Dex increased auxiliary attacks more, but I saw the formula in another post and it turns out that they are the same.

Re: Need Advice

Dex is better because it increases EV also (it's a bad idea to wear heavy armour with UC usually).

Also note that usually, if not wearing heavy armour, raising Dex or Int is better than Str

raising dex or int is also usually (or at least very often) better than raising str if you are not not wearing heavy armour

In soviet russia, double negatives are the same as single negatives!

But I thought you were making a joke and posting the same thing, I missed it, and now the joke's on me. Curse you, and Dowan too

Re: Need Advice

Is there a point where leveling dodge stops being worth it? I've seen somewhere that shields have certain points that are worth leveling depending on size.

Re: Need Advice

There are not any breakpoints for dodging skill other than "when you overcome the armour dodging penalty" (at which point the skill goes from doing nothing to doing something) and "immediately after gaining 1 point of EV" (which will change if your dex or armour changes).

That said, yes, for pretty much any character there is a point where more dodging skill stops being worth it. This is true of every other skill in the game too. It is extremely rare for training skills to 27 to actually be a good idea; it's mostly something you do when you're playing, say, a Trog character, and actually completely run out of useful places to put experience.

Re: Need Advice

I would say spellcasting skill because that +INT is what determines spell hunger but hunger isn't supposed to be a problem for most races anyway. Just get things to not cost a ration and you're fine really.

Re: Need Advice

Int affects your spell casting success, your spell power and your spell hunger.
dex increases to hit,(not much), damage by a little bit (but these two aint worth considering), stealth and EV.
Str reduces the penalties you get from heavy armor.
did I miss something?

Re: Need Advice

Str increases melee damage more than dex does
Str and dex can increase damage in forms, how much and how so varies form to form
Str and dex can increase damage and/or speed for the various types of ranged combat, but it is complicated and is different for each type of ranged combat

Oh, also dex plays a major role in stabbing damage, however stabbing does such a huge amount of damage in general that needing to raise dex specifically to increase stab damage would be a weird situation indeed.

Edited for clarity, thanks crate

Re: Need Advice

Dex actually doesn't ever effect ranged damage per-hit at all (except maybe for throwing I guess).

but the amount of damage Str and Dex increase are a very tiny amount anyway, am I right?

It does effect the speed of each hit (and thereby the damage per time) though.

Re: Need Advice

wow. those are surprising numbers. I always heard "the damage bonus from Str/Dex is so tiny it is not even worth considering", but this difference is pretty big.
EDIT: well, a difference of 15 points is pretty huge too, but still...
my posts are to be read in a mildly playful tone, with a deep, sexy voice.

Re: Need Advice

Do note that, short of Chei worship, +15 to strength and dexterity is a much, much larger increase to stats than anything you'll realistically experience in game. So Sandman25's numbers are good for assessing the benefits of max piety Chei worship, but aren't so helpful when assessing, "How much does putting one (1) point into my stats help me?" every three levels. The point is that dex's effect on increasing your EV and int's effect on boosting spells and str's effect on reducing armor penalties are much more pronounced than the damage increasing effects of dex and str. Obviously when you are talking on the scale of a *30 point* increase in stats (+15 str and +15 dex), there is going to be a very significant and noticeable effect on everything that stats play some role in.

Re: Need Advice

Note that going from 10 to 15 in both str and dex is 10 total points, which is more than the 9 points you get to freely allocate in 27 levels.
Here's the first few of sandman's numbers for UC side by side:
  Code:
UC| 10strdex| 15strdex
 0|      0.4|      0.4
 1|      0.8|      0.8
 2|      1.3|      1.4
 3|      1.9|      1.9
 4|      2.4|      2.7
 5|      3.0|      3.4
 6|      3.8|      4.1

Make a judgement for yourself if that's significant.

Re: Need Advice

So for +5 str and +5 dex, you get a 1.1 increase for average effective damage at 27 fighting and 27 long blades, with a claymore of freezing, compared to 10 str/dex.

Admittedly str and dex damage bonuses are more pronounced at very high levels of Unarmed Combat, but then again with 22 skill in UC (realistic end game goal) and *still assuming 27 fighting* (which maximizes the effect of damage increase from str and dex) you get an increase of 2.1 average effective damage for +5 str and +5 dex, compared to 10 str/dex.

Note that in either case, less than 27 fighting will give even lower returns.

So again I'd submit that probably when you are considering putting points in str and dex every three levels, their increase in damage shouldn't generally be your primary concern or motivation.

for the mainhand punch, i don't think this is true without mutations/forms
a claymore at 27 long blades has on average an effective 30.4 base damage (19 base damage + average of 160% multiplier from long blades skill) before fighting/stats
unarmed at 27 unarmed skill has 30 base damage (3 base damage + 27 skill) before fighting/stats

i think sandman25's fsims might be showing different results because of the offhand punch but i'm not really sure

Re: Need Advice

ok, so Str and Dex are not relevant for damage, except for very high amounts of it.

Re: Need Advice

Another thing that has crossed my mind is wearing plate mail and getting my armor up to where it has a minimal effect on EV. Would that be practical or am I missing something about heavy armor that makes it a bad idea?

Re: Need Advice

It takes 45 armour skill to remove the penalty (for any armour) entirely. That said using plate is often good, if you have good int or dex as well as str you can certainly cast spells or dodge in it. Training dodging will do nothing for a while, then start to be good. Spellcasting works the same way, but don't forget to use wizardry. Staff form (and Vehumet form, for those spells) are the most convenient, but the ring is fine and still swappable.
In both of those cases you're overcoming the penalty through a mix of Armour skill and just getting more of the other skill. Made up numbers: 20 EV could be attained through 30 EV and 0 EVP, or 30 EV and (-10) EVP, or 25 EV and (-10) EVP that becomes (-5) from Armour.
