Mercenary level-ups

So I've been fooling around with mercenaries in wizmode for awhile, and so far I've only ever gotten a tengu to "level-up" so to speak, and turn into a different but similar monster. (IE: Tengu to tengu conjurer). Is there a definite list or something I can look at, to get an idea of when my mercenaries will level up or what they'll turn into? It seems that after sending my two draconians to murder a bunch of ogres, giants, and orcs they still haven't changed.

Re: Mercenary level-ups

All of them level up in that they gain HD if they gain enough xp (same way Beogh orcs level up)--this gives them more HP, accuracy, and MR. When certain monsters gain enough HD (from merc card: merfolk, naga, tengu, orc knight, maybe draconian?) they become the next monster in their progression.

Of things that (i think? pretty sure i didn't leave any out, though i might have included some things that I shouldn't have) can be mercenaries: orc kinghts to orc warlords, kobolds to big kobolds, centaurs to warriors, yaktaurs to captains (who promotes them, anyway?), nagas to warriors, naga mages to greater nagas, defi to de knight, de mage to desu OR decj, depr to de high priest, decj to de annihilator, desu to de demonologist OR sorcerer, merfolk to impaler, tengu to tecj OR warrior, either of those to reaver. Re: Mercenary level-ups

You don't get a lot of those from merc card since you get the already-grown versions.

Re: Mercenary level-ups

I checked the list of possible mercs: it's orc kinghts to orc warlords, nagas to warriors, merfolk to impaler, tengu to tecj OR warrior, either of those to reaver. Draconians don't seem to get classes.

Re: Mercenary level-ups

Yup. I assume this is partly because of their dual-wielding quirk: deep elf blademasters never drop their starting weapons. That's because they can actually wield any weapon in their hands. You can test it out yourself: !fight deep elf blademaster; claymore . claymore v 5 yak is pretty fun to watch.

Re: Mercenary level-ups

Dang, if you're paying 3k gold for a blademaster you should at very least be able to make him dual-wield +9 claymores with *Rage.

A thing I learned today is, if you got a mercenary, Xom can polymorph it - and you still have it as an ally
I had a merfolk-mercenary and Xom turned it into a wind drake.

That's half the fun of mercenaries. Sure, no one wants a big kobold after D:10 that much, but a titan? Sign me up.

Imagine the happiness of clearing the dephts with a titan by your side... a golden dragon or a Stone Giant could be very fun as well. ahhh, the possibilities.
