Ensorcelled Hibernation & Power

Couldn't find this on the wiki or any other topics, please point me to a thread if this has already been answered.

Ensorcelled Hibernation, what does a higher power do? Does it increase duration or does it increase the chance of putting a monster to sleep?

Both. It determines duration which is decreased by monster attributes. If the final duration is positive, the monster is put to sleep.

Woops, here's one to laugh at.

Maybe I wouldn't of had to cast EH 3119 times if I maxed it!

Still going though, I think I need to max the power of EH next!

Thanks everyone. Going from #### to ###### was a drastic difference in effectiveness. I thought I maxed it but, now that I look back at the file I was missing a #. Must of changed when I changed gear.

Either way, first ranged/stealth win!

Oh on a side note for the stabbers out there, 19 stabbing and and a +0 sabre is not enough to one shot the Royal Jelly! I stabbed him and he had just a little bit of health left. Luckily the wand of draining hit and I blinked away just barely from the summons.

Stab damage is random, it's still possible to cause 30 damage with stabbing 27 and +9 Sabre if you are unlucky to roll 1 as base damage

+0 sabre for stabbing? Just on the off-chance you werent aware of this, even tho a sabre does more normal damage than a dagger, a dagger is vastly superior for stabbing due to the stabbing bonus. So a +0 dagger will easily outdamage a +9 sabre on a sleeping enemy.

With Str 10, Dex 25, SBl 14, Fighting 10 and Stabbing 20
Sabre +0 causes 356 damage max
Dagger +9 causes 358 damage max

Yes. Dagger reaches stabbing cap much earlier. But later in the game a sabre or qblade can deal the same (or even more!) damage.

Indeed, I usually try to have a good sabre online at the end of the game, because once all the skills are high enough, a sabre will do a little more stabbing damage than a dagger given the same level of enchantment (As well as more melee damage of course, it's nice to not have to switch weapons). It does take much more skill to get there though.

IE, how many ranks in ice magic is it equivalent to?

Trying to weigh benefits of this ring vs other rings to a stabber...

+50% to spell power before step-downs is what the bots say.

It will do nothing for the chance of failing to cast it, but it will increase the chance of the spell making something sleep. See how much the ### bars go up on the I screen.

It's not a set amount, it's +50% raw power (Which is then stepped down at high power) So roughly speaking for EH, it's equivalent to 50% more hexes and 50% more ice skill than whatever your skill is at now.

You can wear it and look at the results in the spell power portion of the casting screen if you want an abstract of how the ring effects your spell power.

Also remember that it gives you rF-, so be sure if you're going to use it, that you have some way to cancel that out, (or just take the extra risk, but I wouldn't)

I can be wrong here but from the source code I got impression that stabbing is not different from other skills like weapon or fighting - it increases max possible damage and then a roll is made. So I guess it is possible to get even 1 damage in that situation.

Actually as it happens you are mostly wrong.

When a stab is successful these things happen:
Regular base damage of the weapon is rolled including skill/stat/slaying bonuses.
That damage is set to a minimum of one (can't roll 0 on that) then passed to the stabbing bonus thing.
Stabbing *adds* a set amount to the rolled short blades base damage (max of 30)
Stabbing then *multiplies* the result by a percentage, twice for short/long blades and other "good" stabbers, only once for everything else (the second percentage is lower than the first)
The resulting damage is applied to the critter (It isn't rolled a second time)

Actually on a sleeping target I think you'd be guaranteed about 300 damage

I analyzed source code more carefully today.
Rolled damage can be 1, then up to 30 (without any rolls, it is determined by stabbing and dexterity) is added (sum 31), then this sum is multiplied by 3.7 (stabbing 27, sleeping target, short blades category), (current result = 114), then this value is multiplied by (12+27)/12 (stabbing 27, sleeping target) so it is 370.
Then AC reduction and brand is applied.

because you need to quadruple overkill enemies instead of merely double or triple overkill them right

It's hard to one-shot confused monsters, even with very high stabbing.

I seriously forget that confusion stabbing exists because it is so painful to actually use it to kill anything.

Confusion stabbing is good, though, bacause if a stabber has a low spell power and doesn't have other means to stab the monster, he can successfully confuse it with a HD-based spell, like confusing touch or mephitic cloud.

Confuse is good vs undead. Also Mass Confusion is good because you stab some monsters while they are killing each other.

Indeed since sleep/paralyze stabs are one shot one kill at that point it doesn't really matter what short blade you're using.

Confuse stabs, petrify stabs, net stabs, are all helped by a little more damage (even invis stabs sometimes, although most things that can be invis stabbed are one shot one kill regardless at that point)

Mostly I like having a sabre, because a quickblade is not always an option, and the Sabre is better for killing things I'm *not* going to stab, I mean I might as well just get one weapon maxed out rather than carrying a swiss-army-knife and whip out a different weapon for every occasion. It really comes down to laziness though, when I encounter something that's already awake, and that I know I can just tank and melee to death, and would otherwise be hard to get a stab on, I will often just go ahead and do so (hopefully with silence on, so I don't wake anything else up.) I do know that's sub-optimal for a stabber though.
