Being abyssed: what to do, and other questions and comments.

My XL 16 gargoyle warper, who has been having a very successful and lucky game thus far, has just been abyssed by an orc wizard wielding a glowing dagger in the main dungeon. I am now wandering around, entirely unable to translocate myself at all, my wand of heal wounds has been used to its last charge, and after aimlessly searching for some form of exit for thirty minutes I have not found so much as a way down to a lower floor.

Any advice at all would be appreciated. I'd also like to ask why this is in the game. It does not feel right. I am not ready to fight bone dragons and liches, I had no way of knowing that the pathetic little orc wizard just around the corner could send me to the middle of a post-endgame branch in a single turn, and I have absolutely no way to guarantee survival because the game could very well just decide not to spawn an entrance to anywhere at all and shove six liches and a large abomination in my face instead. I would not even be able to use a blink to get away. I may as well be a formicid fighter, now that my sources of haste are gone. I suppose this unidentified wand could be one, but that's only a fairly remote possibility and I'd still be in a pit of random mutating death with no way out and no way to escape anything for no fault or mistake of my own; my game has not even generated any equipment of magic resistance.

I hate to whine. Do not get the wrong idea, here. 99.99% of the time, my deaths in this game are entirely my fault, and of course I'm not even dead yet. If you can see some way for me to achieve a high chance of getting out of here, or tell me how I could reasonably be at fault for this bar failure to avoid anything and everything with a glowing weapon like the plague (not to mention pressing x and v on every monster with a weapon in order to do this), which IMO is not really fair to expect of the player, I'd really and highly appreciate it.

Much love. I'm not trying to rant or annoy anyone with random and baseless complaining. Really, I'd just really love some advice on getting out of this situation without relying on complete random chance; the discussion on the game mechanics and the Abyss itself is secondary and I don't demand that anyone start one if it's been done to death.

You have 6 scrolls of teleportation, use them when things get hectic. Also ID that wand, it could be useful.

Ouch. Orc wizard had a dagger of distortion. It's basically elec + chaos. Has a really low chance to just arbitrarily abyss whoever it hits.

Re: Being abyssed: what to do, and other questions and comme

hm, you just burned your 2 charges of heal wounds with no monsters in sight. I don't think that was the right call. Is blinking/teleport totally blocked or just inconsistent? If ~350 turns took you 30 minutes then you certainly play much more deliberately than me.

You got banished because you have very low EV and you melee'd a monster with an unidentified weapon unnecessarily. I noticed you just looked for MR. MR will not block disto effects, but it will block caster banishment. Some people agree with you that random spawn disto weapons are too arbitrary and should be removed. I personally have a lot of fun running around the abyss in terror, so I disagree with them.

The abyss will randomly shift you around every few hundred turns. I don't have any really good strategies for surviving the abyss. I try to rest up a bit if I think I am safe and I am about to die and I am in a little low visibility cubby hole, I kill small stuff if nothing big is around, and I run from dangerous monsters hoping to get raptured away or for an altar/gate to show up. . I think your best bet is to convert to lugonu if one of her altars shows up. It can take thousands of turns before an altar/stairs down/stairs out appear.

Re: Being abyssed: what to do, and other questions and comme

1) Don't panic. An exit will eventually show up if you keep on uncovering terrain.
2a) Run away from anything scary - 1s, 2s, anything in red, etc.
2b) Don't run away from starcursed masses - they have an effect where they split up while not being attacked and merge when they are being attacked, and the more are in your LoS at once the more psychic damage they do. So wail on them ASAP.
3) Whenever things get hairy, don't forget about Blink, Teleport Other, your 2 potions of resistance and your scrolls of teleportation. Also don't forget about your rod and evokables - they're there to save your ass and they have infinite charges. Also, what's that wand you haven't ID'd yet? You never know if it's haste or teleportation.

BTW, the mutations you get from wretched stars in Abyss are temporary ones. You won't actually get mutated very much by Abyss, but expect to burn through consumables.

Other general feedback on your character:
M&F/fighting are very high while you have no dodging and no evocations. The exp from the last 4 levels of M&F would have made this character quite a bit more durable and opened up some options through evocations, such as evoking invisibility from your randart. Something to think about for the next character...

Re: Being abyssed: what to do, and other questions and comme

Used almost everything I had, no exit ever appeared, and once my resources were up I decided to just keep diving deeper to at least obtain an interesting death.

I really do consider this a completely random and arbitrary end to a good game, but it's OK. I still love Crawl to bits and had a lot of fun with this character. I just don't quite understand why this is a thing considering the rest of the game is designed to avoid the sort of arbitrary (delayed) instadeath that is found in, say, NetHack.

Thanks anyway, everybody. Feel free to offer more advice and debate the Abyss some more, but I'm getting to where I might just suicide characters that ever get sent there. I hate it that much. : P

P.S. in case anyone does not know, when I tried to cast or read blink it failed entirely. Not allowed to escape! Worship the RNG! Worship!

Re: Being abyssed: what to do, and other questions and comme

Honestly I think you were about strong enough to survive the abyss - just stay on abyss:1, take it slow, run from anything you really can't fight, and you should get out. 16 is pretty low, at 20 it would be easy, but 16 is doable if you're careful. You had amazing resists, could probably use rMut/conservation, but those aren't things that will kill you, just be really inconvenient.

Don't let frustration push you down to abyss:2, if you survived a couple hundred of turns in abyss, you just need to do that a few more times, and you'll be out.

I had 100, maybe 120 runs, and I was cast out in Abyss only 3 time. I mean, 60% of it char dies too quickly to meet someone with distortion weapon, but even when this happened, there is a small chance of being cast out.
In one run I has 4 distortion weapon, being "identified" by body of my char. And no Abyss.

I probably (note: probably, no guarantee; nothing forces the game to let you out of the place, am I correct?) could have survived, but I really just got tired of it and figured that by the time the RNG took pity on me I could have another character clear Lair and be at roughly the same place in the game.

Re: Being abyssed: what to do, and other questions and comme

In my own personal experience with the abyss, I've found a few things that seem to consistently boost my chances of survival in the abyss with almost any character.

  1. Regeneration. I generally find that trying to rest in the abyss to recover health is usually (but not always!) more dangerous than it is to keep moving and let your health recover naturally, because when I rest I constantly get interrupted by monsters. Every turn you spend not moving in the abyss is a turn not spent looking for the exit and by consequence it increases the chance that something nasty will show up and kill you before you can escape. The ability to rapidly heal while simultaneously searching for the exit is a huge bonus in your favor.
    _
  2. Ring of Teleportation. Due to the randomly shifting nature of the abyss, running away isn't always an option as you will most likely end up retreating into the LOS of more monsters, and if you're unlucky a wall might randomly appear blocking you in between a dead end and the nasty things that are chasing you. While teleportation takes longer in the abyss, a teleport might be the only reasonable thing to save you from a particularly dangerous situation (e.g. a pack of starcursed masses that got out of control). Having an infinite source of evocable teleportation gives you a reliable method of escape and also means that you don't have to worry about running out of scrolls or getting silenced (if silence is even possible in the abyss). Having a few levels of Evoc skill is ideal, but even with 0 skill the ring still provides random teleportation and it's good to have in case you run out of teleport scrolls.
    _
  3. Stealth. Every monster that doesn't notice you is one less problem to worry about. Escaping the abyss without having to fight or run away from anything is ideal, and a good amount of stealth can turn that pipe dream into a reality. This isn't an option for every character and it's certainly not something you can hope to develop after you've already been abyssed, however it's something to consider beforehand if your character has a decent stealth aptitude.

Unless it really takes you 10 minutes to play 100 turns, that is unlikely. I am typically out within 5-10 minutes of exploration. Also, the abyss typically isn't as nasty as you saw. An executioner, a hell sentinel, a bone dragon and a lich within 300 turns is pretty intense. Usually it is just abyss mooks.

I counted at least forty five minutes spent wandering aimlessly on Abyss:1. Not sure how many turns. I don't speedrun roguelikes; I thought taking one's time and not moving too quickly was good roguelike strategy. If this is not true of the Abyss, it is just one more reason I will summarily execute any future characters that get sent there.

It usually is this nasty for me. Could be the teen levels are just the absolute worst time to be banished. It seems like it. If you're fresh out of D:6 or something, you probably haven't spent five hours on the character and can take the loss. I don't make ranty threads for getting smited to death in two turns on D:2; that's just the early game and it's actually quite avoidable anyway. But the game seems to think that XL 15 or 16 characters deserve liches and hell sentinels to the face if they mess with the wrong orc wizard : P.

I don't believe so, but I could be wrong about that. I thought silence only affected spells, scrolls, and certain god abilities, not evocables, but since silence is so rare I can't recall a single time when I've actually tried to use an evocable while silenced. It was a minor point regardless, silence isn't what you need to be worrying about if you're in the abyss.

~360 turns as of your still alive morgue file above. If you post the death morgue file, it will show exactly how many turns until you died. It's in the notes section near the very end of the file.

It tends to be around 2000-3000 turns before you find an exit in my experience, of course sometimes it's much earlier, and it could be more. It should take around 10-20 minutes usually, unless you're in very tricky fights. You can still use o to explore the abyss quickly, although it does tend to loop you back around to areas you've already seen, which is not optimal. Going straight in one direction will uncover more new tiles, but if you're lazy and not at much risk of death, autoexplore will uncover a lot of tiles per real time, just not per game turns.

First I totally feel the pain on losing a mid level character who you've invested real time into. (read my long thread for details including some early Abyss problems.)

Moving diagonally away from where you started is usually enough to generate an exit. I have never not escaped that way unless I had the poor fortune to run into things I couldn't handle (as you did) and then failed to act appropriately to save myself. Most of the time the exit appears very quickly (25 turns is the minimum time I've had it appear in.) Controlled teleport does not work but random teleports should. I am surprised Blink, the spell didn't. Blink scrolls don't because they are controlled by their nature. I wouldn't suicide a character unless it seems hopeless. Part of the game, I have learned is not giving up. You get pretty far just on trying stuff that you assume won't work, and yet miraculously do. he discussion on random energy vs pillar dancing is an example of this and btw pillar dancing is a bad idea in the abyss but ducking around corners isn't. In fact usually when I see a baddie there I try to get out of its LOS before it can bring friends or close the distance. Sometimes that helps.

Also a note, slow and methodical is good. I am neither when I get angry/upset which is why I have a hard time with the mid-late game. Even though the rational me can figure out how to deal with most of the problems that arise, somehow the hysterical me takes over in crunch moments and suddenly the keyboard isn't working properly. (Fatfingered keys, missed keys entirely, overpressing the keys, typing commands instead of text when switching between a text medium and the game, etc...) Slow and methodical is very good in fact.

As for bad luck, without it you wouldn't have no luck at all. (Because you were born under a bad sign...)

English is NOT my native language.

Re: Being abyssed: what to do, and other questions and comme

Sigh. OK, guys, I love ya all. I'm beginning to see and accept that this was entirely my fault. I really should not have been tabbing into orc wizards anyway; I had ranged methods to deal with them less dangerously and I did NOT manage my Abyssploration well, mostly due to the frustration. I really hate the place and dislike that it's such a hit-or-miss thing. It feels less like a rightful punishment for a bad move and more like some kind of sudden minigame, whether the banishment is ultimately due to bad decision making or not.

Also, suiciding just for going there is admittedly a silly idea. I was...pissed off at the time I thought that, but it's a recurring idea when I die in the Abyss (which is essentially every time I get sent there, not that this happens often at all as GlassGo pointed out).

Not sure how to bring up my death morgue, since I was playing on WebTiles. If it's possible, that would be really cool.

Hopeless wrote:Also a note, slow and methodical is good.

Couldn't have said it better. This is my absolute #1 reason for dying in roguelikes. One must learn when to stop and take a break.

On the webtiles page there is a link at the top labeled "morgues etc", click that then click the link that leads to http://dobrazupa.org/morgue/ (I am not sure if that leads to all the morgues or just the ones on s-z.org)

=edit=
that's apparently just for s-z.org
on akrasiac.org you need to go to
http://crawl.akrasiac.org/
and then click on the morgues link, however that seems to be leading nowhere at the moment so it may be disabled temporarily.

More observations:
You invoked finesse and heroism each less than 5 times during the game. Okawaru's piety accumulates quickly and heroism is very cheap. Finesse less so but still cheap enough to be up whenever you feel unsafe.

If you were so tired of the abyss, why didn't you convert to Lugonu?

How is that different from ctrl-Q? (Wrath of Oka being the reason...)

Re: Being abyssed: what to do, and other questions and comme

Kismet: It's a personal playing fault. I've been playing RPGs since I was maybe six years old; had an Amiga 1200 and Eye of the Beholder 2 back in the day. It's a habit I just picked up over the years; I am afraid of using consumables. With Crawl I've overcome it with items, but I can't see exactly how much piety I have and am far too paranoid about it. Consider it a sign of my noobiness. I've only won once, so gimme a break : P.

I felt like god conversion would be an equally certain death sentence. I've never done it before and wouldn't know how to handle it. I certainly don't want to begin practice while fleeing the Abyss.

Something else that really gets me in this case is that I bothered to make a CiP post about this character. I hate losing them afterwards. I appreciate to the bottom of my heart everyone who goes to the trouble of taking five or ten minutes to give me advice on the character, despite them almost certainly being far busier people with better things to do than I, and it makes me feel like I've wasted their time : (. My apologies to everybody who replied to that thread, and much thanks.

I think if you already want to suicide or hit ctrl+q there is no better opportunity to try abandoning a god for the first time.

You shouldn't feel like you've wasted our time, the advice forum is made for giving advice and if somebody really did feel it was a waste of their time they simply wouldn't reply in the first place.

(Also, perhaps it might be a good idea to try and refrain from thanking literally every single post in your thread.)

Shit, didn't mean to bother anyone with that. Seemed like a nice thing to do. Sorry.

I've been waiting to see if anyone would set me straight on it.

I wouldn't worry about other people on their behalf. If they had something better to do, they'd probably be off doing it, or they're avoiding it on purpose :)

Re: Being abyssed: what to do, and other questions and comme

What you did the most wrong was stopping to fight things at all. For most monsters, even in the best case scenario, you kill it without taking much damage but waste turns that could have gone towards exploration. So the hellwing and wraith and all that junk were probably just wastes of your time.

What you are supposed to do when you get abyssed is something like this:
1) Stop. Look at your character and your items. Turn off autopickup. If you are playing something fast, like a spriggan, just walk around and ignore basically everything. Otherwise, go to step 2.
2) Walk around. Every time a monster comes into view and you're not familiar with what it is, either examine it or look it up with the knowledge bots (not the wiki). If this monster is particularly threatening but normal speed, such as a lich or bone dragon, just move so that the distance between you remains as high as possible. This will keep the monster out of LOS of you, and it will not even be able to do anything. This is why no one actually has to fight a lich in the abyss.
2a) If the monster is fast and easy to kill, go ahead and kill it.
2b) If the monster is fast and threatening, use one of your resources to avoid fighting it.

Part of the reason that a lot of 'experienced players' despise the abyss is not that it's threatening but actually the opposite - it's that with careful play, the abyss is just Adventures in Walking Around. In those cases, even for a character much weaker than this, a trip to the abyss generally costs a couple of teleport scrolls or haste potions without any real danger.

I'm sorry if this is not exactly what you want to hear - I know you probably feel cheated, and I wish I had been able to write this post for you earlier. But I noticed that no one had posted this type of information, and I hope it can help you learn to see the abyss as the snoozefest it really is.

It's not really a bother, but it kind of dillutes the purpose and meaning of it when you thank every single post ever made ever.

Want to know some funny thing?
First time I found myself in Abyss, guess what creature was almost first I saw?
This bloody http://crawl.chaosforge.org/Tentacled_starspawn  Of course it kill me in3 turn.
And I start to think, that monsters that danger it's usual deal for Abyss. And I statr to fear Abyss.

Misunderstanding was resolved in the next time I visited Abyss, and escaped (VpEn with lot of stealth).

It's sound just like my story, except I started to play in '96. :)

Re: Being abyssed: what to do, and other questions and comme

Nah; every death's a learning experience. There's this annoying habit of mine in roguelikes - the more danger I am in, the more flustered I get and the less likely I am to notice the subtle details that keep one alive in player-killing situations. This character survived much worse, including a run-in with Saint Roka on the edge of his line of sight at something like XL 10 or 11 while being more than a little too far from an upstairs. The whole idea from the beginning, and what let me get this far with something that finally is not a berserker, is being careful and therefore ultimately survivable. The Abyss completely tripped me up. It doesn't help that I'm just not familiar with it since I almost never get banished and of course do not dive down there by my own choice.

Thanks!

The other reason I dived, other than (99%) pure stupidity and frustration, is that I thought lower levels might spawn more portals. Some reward for going there besides the rune, maybe.

I play best in Orc, every single time. Before then, I'm not invested in the character and like to be a little careless; after that, I get overconfident and generally get killed by hubris or tabtabtabtabtabwhoopswhatdidIjustdo.

Re: Being abyssed: what to do, and other questions and comme

Ive been into RPGs since 1979 (aD&D in the dorm, what an eye-opener!!), so I totally commiserate on bad habits long inculcated into our animal brains. As for portals, I totally get that. It seems logical. Unfortunately the logic of the Abyss is not easy to fathom on a glance. Also lol @ tabtabtabomgwtfbbq!! I never even started to use tab until I learned to play a little more carefully (ignorance sometimes is bliss :d) and I've still done that. Erolcha, several wizard types and a few others can spell banish you so there is that to look forward to. But as someone suggested in my thread I posit that it would be to your benefit to start a few AKs just to feel how it plays in the abyss when you can escape whenever you want.

They do; but the danger also increases, like any branch.

Conventional wisdom seems to hold that Abyss:3 is the best place to look for the rune -- more reasonable chance of it spawning but not unreasonable danger. And once you have the rune, exits become very easy to find. Sometimes if a character in the high-teens XL gets Abyssed, I decide I'll just go grab the rune while I'm there rather than wander until an exit spawns. It's quite doable, applying the kind of advice you've already received in this thread. But it usually depends on gear -- if I have at least MR++, rMut and Clarity I will likely go for the rune (it's often in a vault filled with nasties, so I want to be sure I'm prepared for Neqoxecs, Golden Eyes, etc.)

Re: Being abyssed: what to do, and other questions and comme

You guys have made me feel so much better about losing this guy, oddly enough. It is EXTREMELY comforting to me to realize in any roguelike death that it was my fault and that I can learn something from the experience to improve my chances next time. It is perhaps the single biggest reason I stopped playing NetHack despite two years of devoted attempts at winning when I found Crawl. I've never, ever, in all this time, really felt cheated by the game within two hours of losing and thinking about it.

The lesson here is that orcs are, in fact, end game enemies because they spawn with, and become exponentially more dangerous depending on their equipment. I learned that this is true no matter what color the orc is or how many I have tabbed through before without a single problem. I learned that mindelay on weapons is not, in fact, the single biggest priority in all circumstances; I COULD HAVE MEMORIZED HASTE. Had a spellbook. No excuses. Haste would have made even this Abyss very survivable. In fact I had an absolute horde of spellbooks in my stash but ignored them thinking mindelaymindelaymindelay.

Finally...I'm a warper, not a berserker. Why in hell am I tabbing a horde of orcs without thinking about it?

But...I only realize these things AFTER practically killing myself in the Abyss.

I don't know if I should ask since it's offtopic (but it's MY topic and I do what I want with it, for I am King of the Thread! Wahahahaha!), but weapon skill is still a very strange tightrope to walk in my skill development for me because the benefits depend a great deal on what you find and I can't seem to find a balance between too much and too little in general.

Also: why was I training earth magic? Basic roguelike strategy: don't base everything on some nebulous future development goal; do what will ensure survival NOW. I've been playing these games for five years or so; I should know this. There was no way I would have Shatter online any time soon; it wasn't helping me at all.

It eases the brain to be able to think of reasons why you lost and what you can do in the future. With NetHack, at least a quarter of my deaths felt completely and utterly arbitrary and I could think of nothing I could have done to improve my chances. That, and IMO the whole game design feels oddly and intentionally hostile to the player in sometimes cruel and unusual ways, e.g. scrolls of genocide killing a dwarven character instantly if one tries to use it on h, i.e. mind flayers, an extremely good choice; however, that is perhaps a thread for another day and/or forum.

Re: Being abyssed: what to do, and other questions and comme

Even if you were a MiBe, I'd still say tabbing in Orc is dangerous. I have been totally overwhelmed by a Warlord+ 3-4 knights because I didn't pay attention until I was too deep in their midst and running was not an option at that point. (To be fair it has been awhile since I did that, but then again, I haven't exactly been playing lots of bes lately.) So yeah that's definitely something not to do. Also, distortion weapons exist but they aren't that common, and when they do hit it is a gamble what will happen (Most of the time you blink).

Re: Skills, same boat here. It seems very much like a guessing game unless you do the math and use fsim and read the learndb posts on the subject and talk to crate and lasty (the two guys who seem to always have a good answer.) I haven't done that stuff yet but its on my todo list.

I kind of know what you mean about Nethack but I'd say the reason for that is that the underlying causes of those deaths are probably just harder to decipher (but the same bottom line: you missed a trick or forgot something basic.) Crawl from what I have read is being developed with Clarity in mind as the devs move forward. So I think that means you will get to know (eventually) why every single thing you did wrong contributed to your myriad YASDs. From what people have said, that is a sign of improvement. That and not doing those things again (which is harder than it seems for idiots like my fingers.)

Stasis does nothing against banishment, actually it can make things worse - if you get hit by distortion weapon and blink/teleport, you're safe from further attempts for some time, with stasis you can be banished the very next turn.

Involuntary abyssing just sucks. Yeah, you can do a lot to improve the odds, but still, it's a game of odds largely out of your control. You can't control whether executioners or lair trash spawns, you can't control whether that diagonal line you're running in leads you into a dead end, and you certainly can't control when (if ever) an exit spawns.

The advice given here is good advice for getting out, but even following the best advice, if the RNG decides to screw you in abyss, you're screwed. It's not like the rest of the game, where you can always plan around getting back to a staircase or something.

Even with a character who can easily survive the abyss, 2000 turns of aimless wandering just kills my interest in the game. It's not usually practical to avoid melee with every enemy wielding a branded weapon, although obviously if you can it's a good idea.

Blomdor wrote:It usually is this nasty for me.

I think this is true. There was a point for me when I'd have maybe 5 or 6 or so characters who had made it past Lair, and 3 of them had died due to banishment. I made a post here about it. In the early game, banishment is extremely rare, and dying isn't as big a deal anyway unless you're going for a win-streak. In the late game, surviving banishment is usually trivial. But when you've just gotten good enough to beat lair and are getting the hang of the mid game for the first time, banishment is a huge threat. It's not necessarily the biggest danger of the midgame for experienced players, but I think it's definitely one of the biggest dangers of the midgame for players who are still new to the midgame and don't know how to handle all of its threats yet.

A lot of the other big threats in the midgame can be handled using similar tactics to the ones that get you through the early game, so by the time you're good enough to get to the mid game you're probably good enough to handle most of its dangers, but banishment is an entirely new type of challenge you have to deal with. But like any of the game's challenges, you can learn to deal with them through a mix of experience and advice. I struggled with banishment for a while, but eventually I got the hang of things, made it through the midgame without getting banished, beat the game, and I think the only time I've died in the Abyss since was a Chaos Knight who got sent there by Xom and cornered by a bone dragon (and even then, it's possible I had consumables I hadn't considered that could have gotten me out of that situation).

This isn't just an orc thing. Any enemy that can wield a weapon could wield a distortion weapon. I've been banished by skeletal warriors. The lesson is that you should pay attention to the weapons of any enemies your fighting, and be extremely careful around any unknown glowing/runed/whatever ones, because any unid'd weapon could be distortion. Also, keep out for the warning signs - if you ever see a message about space bending/warping around something, or get blinked or tele'd by an enemy with no blink/tele other ability, then you know it's distortion and should be certain to avoid any melee confrontation with that enemy.

That's why I love Crawl so much. It's great fun, and almost physical pleasure to realize that you start to play better.
First time I try Crawl (~1.5 year ago) there were very shocking feelings - my character is constantly was dying from all causes.
I was not even able to reach Orc Mine.
So I abandoned Crawl, and start to play ToME4 (it looked like it was easy game, but it is not  ), and while playing it I realize, that if I want to beat the game, you need to think, literally every step, especially in critical situations.
So I came back to Crawl as It turned out that it is more interesting and deep game, and It turned out, that I start to play much better with this approach.
English is NOT my native language.
