In that case, here is a second attempt win, with Trog abandoned. (The first one died to some orc priests very early on.) The game started off easy as I found a set of quicksilver dragon scales on D:1, which was great armor for me, and I also got a +6 broad axe from Urug somewhere in mid-Dungeon, which ensured my damage output was good enough. Things started getting hard near the rune branches. I was almost killed near the Spider entrance due to all the moths of wrath around, combined with tarantellas, leaving me stumbling, confused, next to several berserk spiders. And of course, with no potions of curing. It was quite incredible that I survived that, and I actually ended up doing the entirety of Shoals before returning to Spider. I'm not sure if that survival had anything to do with me wearing an amulet of an acrobat. The amulet was useful throughout the game, allowing me to run away with ~40-50 EV whenever something dealt an unexpectedly high amount of damage, but I'm not sure if it did anything while I was confused. If it did, it was undoubtedly what saved me.
In the first 2 rune branches, berserking and the occasional Brothers in Arms allowed me to deal with most challenges - nothing was impossible to defeat, honestly, it was just a matter of making sure I wasn't killed first. I also got a lot of needles - I got into Throwing, and the various needles helped a lot.
After the second rune, I switched from Trog to Zin, which seemed like the obvious switch (and one I did before on a Felid that went into extended) - Zin pretty much gives all the tools needed to survive Trog's wrath efficiently. The only other one - the Blink spell - was found in time as well. With Blink and Zin's Sanctuary (which I could access almost immediately given how you can just donate money to Zin for piety), the berserk packs were no real issue. What I was actually afraid of was the wrath effect that would make me pass out for a few turns, like Berserk sometimes does. That could have been disastrous in a big fight, but luckily turned out not to be an issue. I made sure to always have Vitalization on in fights since it shielded me from some of the punishments.
I burned off Trog's wrath in Elf:1-2 and then Vaults:1-4, so I could start Depths wrath-free. Which was a good thing, since while Elf and Vaults were pretty easy, Depths was much more dangerous. By this point I had already trained up some spells, including Cause Fear and Mana Viper. Thus I decided to switch to acid dragon scales so I could cast spells easier. It also gave me rCorr, but despite that, caustic shrike packs were still a big problem - I had to isolate them, fight them one by one, and still sometimes had to retreat. I mostly just ended up paralyzing them. Needles of frenzy worked very well in Depths, with many monsters that were strong, but easily frenzied, causing them to wipe out entire packs.
The choice for third rune seemed obvious - with high stealth and spriggan speed, Abyss it was. The rune vault was pretty trivial, since as soon as I was around half HP, I simply cast Sanctuary, and everything fled while I strolled in to grab the rune.
I wasn't sure how I'd deal with orbs of fire, but I hoped that mana vipers plus high-end summons (I tried Monstrous Menagerie and Hydras) would be enough. (Vitalization plus Brilliance allowed me to cast level 7 summoning spells without too much difficulty.) Unfortunately, this plan was a total failure, and since I didn't dare getting into melee with them (which would no doubt have put me into danger and forced me to waste resources) I decided to just ninja the Orb. I cleared the Crypt to level my Stealth up and get some more piety, learned Darkness, and as soon as OOF density in Zot:5 became unbearably high, I started drinking haste potions, ran in for the Orb under Darkness, and ran away. And that was it. Food actually started to become a strategic issue near the end, which was part of the reason why I wanted to spend no more time clearing Zot.
