Ring of teleportation challenge

I found that I weirdly enjoy playing with cursed ring of teleportation, it makes games very exciting and forces to use weird tactics and strategy so here is the challenge.
Win a game putting on and never removing a ring of teleportation. Fo does not qualify and you can never use stasis (even with paralyzers in LoF). You can evoke the ring whenever you want.

This must be like playing with Xom, only better.

I mean, a tele ring will teleport you, but it won't banish you, confuse you or summon a hostile fiend.

True yet the ring teleports player more often than Xom does. It was fun to always try to stay at high HP and MP. I believe the ring teaches to play in a very safe way except you cannot exclude something and forget about it so you may want to move to deeper level (I was Mu and Pickel had a wand of confusion, ouch) or you may want to kill the excluded monsters after clearing the rest of the level to make deeper levels easier.
Now I am not sure why I am not retreating 3 dungeon floors up to heal in normal games ;)

Re: Ring of teleportation challenge

I like the idea, the problem is the ring is not guaranteed to spawn :(

We should have a special "challenge game" menu that allows you to start with an unremovable =tele.

Right, I thought about it too, wizard mode would make it non-challenging. Probably you can add condition "must try unknown rings no matter if you have remove curse or not"

Re: Ring of teleportation challenge

You could also play an Imp, they start with teleportitis from turn 1 and you still keep both ring slots open . . .

. . . it just so happens that my son has been working on a playable Imp species with teleportitis (and shoutitis and blink and a few other things).

I'll make another announcement for Tom later, but Sandman25 and others here might be especially interested in this one. If you're curious you can get a peek from https://gitlab.com/TomConrad/crawl-play ... its/master . (I can drop a windows binary somewhere later if you can't build your own and are on Windows.)

Magipi nailed it, Imps are like playing Xom but not as bad. You do get into some pickles. I got one as far as Vaults and then got a succession of 3 bad teleports, went on tilt, and died.

Re: Ring of teleportation challenge

One time I had an awesome VpEn^Dith who slipped a tele ring on to get the Abyssal Rune. After exiting the Abyss, I forgot to take it off, and found it really fun to be teleported into the middle of a half dozen sleeping enemies. It became my preferred method of exploring new levels. Not ideal by any means, but a lot of fun!

Thank you!
I will give it a try tonight (I will build it from source).

Re: Ring of teleportation challenge

Imp is too powerful IMHO. Taking the whole band of Robin with 0 skill in short blades with +2 short sword of speed does not seem right. I am Hunter who didn't put any points into Dex, didn't train any Dodging and my EV is already 18 and I am regenerating quickly.
Though yes, teleportitis, shoutis and blinking are fun, it's a very distinct race.

Re: Ring of teleportation challenge

Re Imps, I put up a proposal in GDD (https://crawl.develz.org/tavern/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=15362). We'll quit posting about Imps here after this post.

I mentioned putting up a Windows binary earlier, but it doesn't work easily (Tom's code is based on trunk and you can't swap the binary in with the regular install). If a lot of people ask for this we'll try to figure something out.

Sandman25, thank you for trying them out and letting us know what you thought. Tom is expecting to make changes based on people's suggestions.

You of course realize that you can just use wizmode the one time at the beginning of the game, right? Twice, I guess, to generate the ring and then a curse scroll. I'm asking not to be a jerk, but out of sincere curiosity.

Of course I realize that. But I have impression that some players hate wizard mode and would refuse to use it.

Probably fair. I bet a good way to keep challenges like this honest would be if you could turn on a morgue option that logged all wizmode actions. Is that something that exists?
