Please use this thread for discussion of all things pertaining to Week 1 of
Crawl Sudden Death Challenges Season 3.
Week 1: MfAs (Merfolk Assassin)
Tier I Bonus: Collect a rune without leaving any branch (excluding D and Abyss).
Tier II Bonus: Collect all 3 Lair runes before ever leaving Lair.
Week 1 Gods: Cheibriados, The Shining One, Qazlal, Lugonu*Note: For the purpose of bonuses, "branch" means "multi-level branch, not including the main Dungeon".
Unless otherwise specified, you do not need to win the game to get points for the bonus challenges._________________________________________________________________

***NOTE***: With regards to the bonuses, leaving a branch is defined as exiting that branch by using an upstairs. In other words, entering Snake from Lair does NOT count as leaving Lair. But going back to the Dungeon from Lair does count. Similarly, going back to Lair after entering Snake counts as leaving a branch (and similarly, going back to Orc from Elf or to the Dungeon from Orc).
If you are still confused about what constitutes leaving a branch, please post here and I'll do my best to clarify.

The problem with going for the bonuses is you end up with no points for god.maxpiety or branch entries when you get mangled by unseen horrors, dancing weapons, and finished with an ill-timed berserk vs tengu/raven team. I even had 2x ring of ice and a book of ice, was looking forward to super-refrig.

When will I ever learn -- rolling along, then tengu warrior on D12 with 2 ravens? Sure, I can take them ... Well, I was shooting for the bonus, so I dived dungeon and never entered Lair, so it's a good thing I at least killed one unique or I'd have a shut-out. Good luck to everyone else.

In IRC you post those commands in ##crawl or pm them to the Sequell bot. Then it will start the replay of this game. You can watch either on

Well, I tried to watch it on the termcast.develz.org link, and it was a huge disappointment. I do not have the proper words to describe the display, but it looks like the whole picture disappears pretty frequently (1-3 seconds), and then reappears, making it absolutely impossible to follow.
Also, is there a way to set the speed or to stop it or to rewind it?

I just checked out this exact command and I'm not quite sure why WalkerBoh included the "x2.0", which means the replay is at two times its normal speed. I'd suggest you try

If you still have display issues this might also be caused by your browser (I assume that you try to watch via the web interface).
Edit: also I just noticed that this command will break as soon as DrKe will enter Zot with another character...

Oops, sorry for the crappy command. I usually put long replays on speed x2.0 just so they don't take up the TV forever, but I put this one on a separate channel so that's not a concern anyways.
But yeah, you can change the number after the "x" to adjust the replay speed to whatever is best for you. Here's a better query:

Wow, that went way better than expected. Splatted in Zot:5 with the Orb but it was a really funny ride
. I think I could have won hadn't I lost my three servitors to what was behind a runed door. Ah well, eager to play the next challenge.

I chose Trog: partly because I like to copy Minmay
and partly because I don't like the listed gods (except Lucy, but she is impossible to pick up without extreme luck). Trog worked fine, gave me everything I needed, although he slightly overestimated the importance of my 2.4 skill in Short Blades, and kept showering me with runed quick blades and daggers.
I also went for the Tier-1 bonus (Swamp is good for a merfolk), but then I decided that Tier-2 is not reasonable (I had no rCorr). So went to Orc, and eventually the 3rd was Vaults:5.
Big thanks to Tedronai for his good advice (this is plural), and also thanks to Eyesburn (SaintRoka) for spectating. The lesson I learned from Tedronai: use more consumables, and use them proactively (before I get into trouble).

Ugh. Got too pumped getting the tier 2 bonus and was running hot and overconfident. Yelled for more elves before throwing up trogs hand and the last sorcerer banished me, then Abyss was it's usual messed up self and I got whacked by my own damn hill giant. I was playing really well because I was taking big breaks between each milestone. Frustrating loss.

roger that, I entreted the lair, had a komodo dragon 2 steps from me and instinctively stair danced to buff up. I had 2 windows open, terminal and irc, and immediately saw my messages broadcast in #csdc that I was ineligible for the bonuses...

RIP, I took off my amulet of stasis so I would be able to haste while fighting the royal jelly. I should have been wearing my ring of magic resistance.

I'm done with this one, I'm happy with this start on the challenge
I could have looted more runes, but I feared not having enough time to finish today, and won't be able to play for some days.
I found a rCorr amulet in a shop on D:7, but forgot to buy it before entering Lair... Getting Tier II bonus was a bit hard (Dissolution guarding Slime:6 stairs didn't help), but still fun
The new one-time points are fun, I went for Orb100, even if 100 turns is way enough

Super lucky win in the books.

Normal work, first two runes easy enough but...how to get 3rd rune before leaving Lair. I didn't have control tel, or ring of tele, or digging ( this would remain true all game ). However, god(Jivya) smiled on me and put an altar outside of slime. Okay, I've never won with Jiv and expect Trog to kill me for it but I can get the T2 bonus at least. Conversion happens and I spend I ton of time scouring Lair/Spider/Shoals for Jiv piety. I get enough and go get the 3rd rune.
What to do now? I figure well I might be able to run Orc, then dive to Zot to get those points. Trog sends me lots of hate mail, nearly killing me and draining my blink scrolls as time went on, and on, and on. He didn't stop sending his ill regards until Zot 1 or 2. So I got to Zot and figure I'll poke around a little. No real plan and wasted about 5 of my heal potions. Now with 2 heal potions left, no digging, disintegrate, or heal wand and at 43k turns. Seems doubtful I can win but maybe I could rush the Orb for those points? DrKe wisely told me to train up translocation.
Short ending, Z4 I run past while they blast and cast, 4 summoning draconians in cages ( because I can't break the cages ). Dive down to Z5, tele about 20 steps from orb chamber. Apport, grab, get surrounded waiting for tele, get teleported back to stairs I came down
. Zot 4 Pan lord kicks my but down to 10 hp before teleport kicks in, another Pan lord continues in his place. Eventually I escape the dungeon.
First merfolk win, first Jivya win for me. Apologies if you don't like the long report!

There have been some truly spectacular games this week, I'm very impressed by the talent displayed here! Simply cannot wait to see what the rest of the season brings. CSDC really seems to push every player to their natural potential.

Well, that was fun. My first merfolk and my first assassin. Splatted to Yiuf, knowing full well he was there (the huge collection of hammers was kind of a giveaway) but I wanted his exp. He's got a 25% kill rate on me now so I should really start leaving him alone.
At least I took down two uniques, first Terence and then someone else (Edmund?).
Hopefully I'll get in some practice Te-- (but not TeEE) games before I try my week two run.

I am now on D8 having cleared D1-D7 in their entirety. I have a 15 polearms, which I started training on D2 after finding a +0 Spear. I have never seen a dungeon start without at least one gnoll or orc warrior with a polearm.
My best weapon is still a +0 Spear. I have found 1 other polearm in 7 levels. Another +0 spear. I haven't even found a normal trident. I finally found a whip of elec and I am getting by, but too late too little. I spent 10 minutes engaged in a cat and mouse battle with a single sheep.
I have found a total of 7 poisoned needles in 7 dungeon levels as well. I am down to 8. Took me a grand total of 4 shots to lose my 2 curare. No spellbooks. No evocables except a digging wand. Lost the majority of my consumables, including what heals and cures I had, to a hasted orc wizard on D7 with a dagger of distortion.
The armour I have found consists of +0 rpois leather and a +0 cloak. I don't know what else you can not find in the first 7 dungeon levels but I have definitely succeeded in not finding it.
Edit: found haste pots and burned to kill a wight pack and got me a +1 freeze halberd. THIS MIGHT BE DOABLE.

Decided to go for "Enter Zot before XL 21" bonus. Was at Xl 20.7 and thus I couldn't afford clearing Depths so I mostly dived to Depths 5 (which is not that easy with all that noise generated by Qazlal). But Depths 5 was full of monsters so I returned to Lair, learned Control Tele, took some brilliance potions and returned back to Depths 4 (trying to kill no monsters). Then I quaffed brilliance, casted Control Tele (despite having no magic skills), read teleport and landed adjacent to Zot entrance with 9 sleeping draconians who waked up immediately. Invoked Disaster several times, got to the entrance without killing all the monsters (more monsters were coming) and finally pressed > to enter Zot at Xl 20.75.
