Please use this thread for discussion of all things pertaining to Week 4 of Crawl Sudden Death Challenges Season 2.

Week 4: NaNe (Naga Necromancer)

Tier I Bonus: Enter Elf before entering a rune branch.
Tier II Bonus: Reach Depths:5 before entering a rune branch.

*Entering the Abyss (for example, by being banished) does not count as entering a rune branch.

*Note: For the purpose of bonuses, "branch" means "multi-level branch, not including the main Dungeon".
Unless otherwise specified, you do not need to win the game to get points for the bonus challenges.

Ne is a very powerful start. Also it is first time when participants can get 10 bonus points for winning without Vaults/Lair and without giving up tier II bonus points. I'll probably die trying to get them, at least it should be fun.

What's the point of having a runed door if Deep Troll Earth Mage breaks walls any way? I haven't opened the door.
Yes, Frost Giant is from the same vault.

Edit. I stopped going for 10 bonus points. It would be a suicide when there is a Storm Dragon adjacent to Orcish Mines entrance.

Good news: I haven't died yet

Bad news: I'm playing while sleep deprived and keep changing my decisions. I decided to go Lucy and be more melee oriented with maces, but then I found a qs of pain and decided to go back more necro, but then I memorized stone arrow and don't remember why. This is intense yo. I'm playing against both the game and myself.

I don't like to be a stickler, and maybe it's the automated process, but I certainly entered Elf before any rune branches (in fact, I didn't enter any rune branches... :-( ), and the Tier I point isn't registered for me:

Komodo dragons hit a lot harder then I remembered. I was really starting to like the character (often a death sentence) and then the lair entry vault had a komodo and I just didn't take it seriously. It really didn't occur to me that it would do 30 damage per bite.

Lol, I forgot that turns displayed in game are not even close to real turns for Na. I was playing in a relaxed way with 80+k turns before even entering Zot and was really surprised that I missed bonus point by 145 turns only.

Yep, just a typo in the scoresheet formulas, it's fixed now. If you send me a PM instead, I'll see it quicker next time. :)

Thanks! Now I suck just a little less.

What happened to kill me? I got more than 2 enemies on screen at once without my support. Not a fan of not being able to transport corpses downstairs.

This was lightning fast.
Game 1: a kobold in my starting room, poison spit missed, pain miscasts, poison miss again, end.
Game 2: a gnoll pack on D:3.

I had a tough time targeting poison spit as well. Breath recovery was faster than I expected, but accuracy was completely crap.

Another example of just how lame my game is -- I made it to Zot:5 without any means of dealing with OoF and resorted to random teleporting out of sheer frustration (with predictable results). Just how do you get a fire-based character through there, anyway? Well, a better screenshots than the last 2 weeks, anyway.

Learning iron shot is probably the simplest method. You could always try firestorm, but it's very loud, enjoy the entire floor coming at you.

I've had 0 good games this season. First game this week I couldn't quite fight a green rat outside the sewer entrance, even with 2 skeletons to help, died at level 4. Then the replay I was demolished by a D:1 gnoll with a halberd. And I so liked this combo...

My best D1 so far this tourney: +2 pain dagger and a +0 naga barding. Thanks to HDA for reminding me that vampiric draining spell is a thing and a great way not to die (among other nuggets of wisdom).

Dead. I shouldn't have been greedy going for the branchless thing, I was feeling low on xp and could have just done lair instead of having practically every other fight being a near-death. An orc warlord guarding the only access to orc:4 didn't help much.

My opinion regarding this weeks tier-I bonus challenge:

I think tier-I is too weak. It is like the ones from season one which you got automatically if you just stayed alive long enough.
There is no challenge at all in dipping your nose in Elf:1 for one turn. I think for this weeks tier-I challenge entering Elf:3 would have been appropriate (to better correspond with the tier-II challenge).

Just my 2 cents :)

Originally I had Elf:3 as the requirement for the Tier I but it was a little more difficult than I wanted. I am okay with the Tier I being an extra point for making it a certain length through the game on some weeks. Week 1 was very similar in that regard.

My initial plan was to use pain /animate skeleton until finding an altar of Trog. That is what I should have done.
I'll just take it as a lesson that the spell interface of crawl is not for me. But whatever, 10 more points :)
