Re: Week 9 - TrAM

These bonuses are the hardest yet. Only runes you can get are Abyss, Pan and Hell, which means going straight through the Dungeon and into Depths. Unless I'm missing something. This one seems bonkers.

Yeah, the Tier II is very hard this week. But on the other hand, TrAM is a ludicrously easy combo.

Much like Lord of Darkness banner in tournament:

Kikubaaqudgha wants players to demonstrate their mastery over the forces of darkness without delay, and will recognise a player who shows disdain for the Lair as a LORD OF DARKNESS.
I: Enter the Vestibule of Hell without having entered the Lair.
II: Get a rune without having entered the Lair.
III: Win a game without having entered the Temple, the Orcish Mines, the Lair, or the Vaults (+50 tournament points).

Weird choice: go for tier bonus and die with 80% chance or ignore it and win with 80% chance.

Branchless games have been won plenty of times, and while getting the first branchless rune is a lot harder these days (like the rest of crawl), WalkerBoh placed absolutely no restrictions on what you do after getting that rune. I think you're overreacting.

Don't forget there is a restriction of 1 game only. I know how speed runs are played - 10 splats, 1 great win. This is similar to speedrunning IMHO, you are very likely to die because you are underleveled.

Edit. I am not suggesting to change tier bonuses, just whining a little :)

Never said it was impossible. Just that its the hardest challenge so far and I still think it is.

Just nitpicking, but I'd think speedrun is more like 100 splats, 1 great win. 1/10 is not bad, for most people, playing conservatively.

It all depends on how fast you're trying to go - and if you're trying to go too fast the odds are even worse than that.

Such an awesome combo, still got completely destroyed. Menkaure and a centaur ganged up on me and my teleport put me one space from where I was before...

Yes, I think teleports should be changed, they should have some minimal radius where you cannot land into. Yesterday I stepped on unseen teleportation trap in Zot5 with my DEVM and landed adjacent to the same trap, that was hilarious.

Re: Week 9 - TrAM

Well I went for the Tier II challenge and just got obliterated in Depths. In typical fashion, I entered Depths with a +3 IDA and no rF (so I was at rF-) and the first two enemies I encountered were a fire dragon and fire giant. Went back upstairs and swapped to robe of Folly (yes, my next-best armor), and tried to handle the fire dudes with some digging tactics and greater demon - which of course summoned a hostile balrug (despite 10 invo :( ). Managed to barely tele out, and then fought an ice dragon, which hit me for 46 damage on the last turn and killed me.

In summary, Depths is really hard at xl13.

Forgive my confusion, but isn't TrAM Troll Arcane Marksman? How is this an easy combo? (I rarely play either so perhaps I'm missing something super obvious)

Out berserked by Snorg after fighting Maud. I have to say that I don't know how to play a bruiser who can't avoid or aborb hits other than with hp. I hadn't even found a cloak by lair 5.

Oh well. There's always next week (until there's not).

Well yes, it is often easy to make snide remarks when you take quotes out of context and leave out the other half. Good work, A+ for you. To make it clearer for ya, the typical part is that I entered with rF- and found two fire enemies right away.

Re: Week 9 - TrAM

I also went for challenge 2. I entered Depths 1 at XL13 wearing steam dragon armor and a +0 randart hat with rF+, though I had already lost all my throwing items to a jelly and attrition, and the only decks I had were escape and defense. Thus, almost immediately 5 boggarts nearly kicked my ass by summoning a ton of crazy ranged threats from far enough away that I couldn't just mow the boggarts down with claws. I barely escaped, and came back to wipe them and a stone giant out one at a time. A lot more luring things to stairs later, and I had Depths:1 clear. I went downstairs and found a portal to the abyss quickly. I though about getting more xp before entering, but I saw a scary-looking yaktaur pack in a very open area and opted not to.

I entered the abyss at xl 14, and made my way to Abyss:3 surprisingly quickly. Before long I found the rune vault, but it was a particularly nasty one filled with ettins dual-wielding distortion. I was eyeballing it when an invis lorocyproca came up behind me. Fighting it was scary, and WalkerBoh convinced me to try to rush the rune while streaming summons behind and using deck of defense to buff. I had no mana at this point so I had to draw blind, and my first summon card gave me abjuration aura. I didn't notice immediately, so I summoned a few more things and they poofed after 1-3 turns. Super. Deck of defense gave me flight and lichform, but that wasn't nearly good enough to deal with the trailing lorocyproca so I eventually died.

There is a score listed for me under TrAM when I definitely haven't gotten around to playing anything past TeSK yet.

Grrr, died on Swamp:4 to a pack of Spriggans. Spriggan Riders are surprisingly dangerous. I chalk this death up to a lack of Troll experience. Just not used to seeing a character's HP go down so easy. Not used to playing glass cannons. Oh well, lesson learned.

It is even better than that, actually.

Corona tends to stick to stuff without needing too much hexes training. Corona + Large Rocks is a match made in heaven for the early game. It is also worth it to get at least slow, you can pick up the higher stuff later on if you like but by Lair corona + slow + claws + large rocks will be extremely powerful with just a nominal 5 or 6 levels investment in hexes—completely doable by Lair despite -4 aptitude on a dude that's so strong in early game as Troll—plus the usual UC and fighting. TrAM is significantly stronger than TrHu, don't let the aptitudes fool you.

Oh and also don't forget the two throwing nets.
