You could be like me and stupidly wield a qstaff to ID when there was no need to. Of course it was distortion.

XL13 at full piety with Kiku, I unwield instead of converting it to pain and land in abyss next to a Lugonu altar. What would you do?

I don't think I was super dumb this game! Which is nice. I however, did get petrified by a basilisk and the next turn have a centaur warrior walk in....still, that was a fun game, finally had a good entry here....though with DEVm, if you don't die on floor one, you should have a decent game.

Whereas I, so eager to start this build, decided in my venomous hubris to take on Yiuf by plinking him to death with poison, and mistimed the run away so that he ended up next to me (or energy randomization or whatever) and messed up the exit. At barely into XL4. If there's one thing I should be learning, it's how to avoid unnecessary risks.

I'd switch but then I'm terrible.

Went for tier I challenge. Entrance way to Orc.

Mangled by an orc knight
... wielding a +0,+0 long sword
(14 damage)
... while paralysed by an orc sorcerer
... on Level 1 of the Orcish Mines.

The entrance was crowded but what I had seen was regular orcs, stairdanced and cleared what I saw. When I next went down, knight was at stairs and Sorc paralysed me. I had a great character that I blew, of course Orc 1 was crazy when usually it's a piece of cake.

My run ended in an ossuary with a centaur ghost. How do you die as a centaur in an ossuary? wtf

I think I'd join. Kiku wrath isn't that deadly, and you could always bend space out when surrounded by zombies. Also distortion is probably stronger than pain on a caster, since you'd prefer to have the dudes move away. Not to mention that abyss will kill you 90% of the time at xl13 with normal speed.

I just wouldn't unwield it in the first place, but it's a little late for that. Distortion is quite good, even if it's a bit obnoxious.

I had better options than distortion and I don't like the brand. I should have pain branded that staff to be safe. I wasn't planning on using the necronomicon anyway. But that is part of the gamble.

My preference at the moment is to convert to Lugonu and depart the Abyss.

But departing the Abyss only comes at * of piety, no? So you still have to search an exit even if you convert.

This run is going quite well; I've got D, Lair and Orc cleared, got a good selection of spells including poison arrow, haste, and LRD, and I've got decent weapons to choose from, though I'm mainly using a staff of energy. I've got a cutlass of elec and both dagger and whip of pain to choose from -- and a +10/+9 great mace {antimagic, MR++ Dex+2}. I've used 2 ?acq on armour, and got a randart buckler of rPois (and nothing else) and The Shield of Resistance. I guess I'll be getting some Shield skill. Right now my main priority is some more AC, and I could enchant ice or fire dragon hide -- I accidentally sacrificed the mottled dragon I killed to Fedhas.

I ran into a bailey early that was problematic: it was the hallway between moats with kobolds checking returning weapons. I felt fairly secure, since it's a fairly easy bailey, but to my surprise the orc knight at the end had a +8 battleaxe of freezing w/ rPois on it. It took me longer than it should have to notice, and I was forced to blink into one of the moat sections to hide. While I did that, the orc got a stack of returning tomahawks, and used them to prevent me from sniping him with stone arrows. Eventually I turned invis, used one of the teleporters, and built a small oklob farm to kill him off.

You get enough piety to depart the abyss upon conversion.

Nergalle guards the only entrance to Orc 2 and it looks like I will die trying to get tier 1 bonus. Without the bonus the game would be boring anyway.

Edit. Uh, Nergalle + 3 Orc Priests vs 53 HP :shock: Tier 1 bonus is obtained.

But you have animate skeleton, is that not good enough?

You need animate dead to use Kiku's 2-turn Receive Zombie Army ability. Maintaining an army of skeletons might do the trick, but I'd be afraid of throwing them all at a lich and running all alone into trouble.

I had to go through Nikola to get the bonus also. I killed him way before getting my first ?EA. Of course, I had gotten rElec from a potion of beneficial mutation. :D

Lucky you ;) I ID-ed resistance in Lair only and I would not dare to enter Elven Halls again anyway because of 2 Deep Elf Mages near entrance.

This is first time when I am playing Kiku knowing that Agony has a crazy spell power booster. Actually doing Mines before Lair allowed to have 1% Agony in Lair 1 and killing Hydra is extremely easy, even easier than with En or conjurations.

Edit. Found Necronomicon in Lair 4, now I will not spend hours thinking what to ask from Kiku ;)

They have some dangerous spells, but they rarely survive a venom bolt, and minions can run interference.

Yes, I know they are fragile but they will have free turns while I am using stairs and I have no minions because it is a new level with a single entrance (no Animate Dead unfortunately). Basically I had to die in Orcish Mines 2 to Nergalle+3 Orc Priests so I didn't want to push my luck any further, the death (in Elven Halls) would be completely fair. Also I would have to kill Nikola somehow which is not a trivial task either since I barely killed an Orc High Priest who just refused to die to Venom Bolt despite being confused.

Edit. Wild magic mutation is definitely a very good mutation for DE, got it in Lair.

The conversion to Lugonu was okay (I like Lugonu but it did force me to alter strategy at a late stage), but stupid play got me in the end. After wiping several druids in the swamp with ease, my mephitic attack suddenly decided to fail me and just as I realized that the foul sprite may have rpois, I was crushed quickly and unexpectedly by a vicious lighting/tree hug combo. I could have survived one or the other. Shame that there is still no visual indication when plants become alive. The invisible threat is what I despised most about the forest. But maybe that's how it's meant to be.

Doing all right so far. I just got the Tier 1 bonus with a lot of luck. I spent 140 turns in Orc before getting to the bottom. The down staircases were in my LOS each time I descended. Still haven't gone to Lair, but I'm thinking I could dive to Elf:3 for the Tier 2 bonus. Once I got IMB, I was able to handle things that my poison magic couldn't. That being undead, Ice Beasts and Imps. Vehumet wasn't in the temple, but I had my heart set on him, so I kept going. One floor down I found his altar guarded by a frost throwing statue. I had rC from a ring, so I decided to drop my potions and risk it for the biscuit... when an OpVM player ghost decided to appear right next to me. (Shout out to Sandman)

The VM knew Mephitic Cloud, so I popped a fog scroll to avoid getting caught in it's MC and then blasted it with IMB. Did way more damage than I thought, but then again, it was an Octopode, so I should have expected it. Other than that, no really scary moments. Josephine and Psyche are trolling around D:11, so I'll leave them be for a while. Next I'm gonna try to get to Elf:3, but time for a break and some Dark Souls 2.

EDIT: Also there's a Vampiric Short Sword for 300 some gold I want to pick up. I plan on being a caster primarily, so I'll probably go Buckler + Short sword as a backup.

Found Elven Halls. There was an Elven welcoming party, a lot like Tomb:2. Stairdanced a few and then decided to hell with it. Those elves were a bit too much in higher numbers for the tier 2 bonus.

Oh man, pointless death. I died the turn I picked up my 9th rune, Cerebov's. Probably the last 20 or so turns of this game were all mistakes, and completely preventable. So, uh, dang. Gotta remember to stop if I'm no longer paying attention/feeling invincible.

My first win in the challenge! Third win online, 14th win overall.

My original goal was to win one in the challenge series, so now I'm satisfied :D

A few highlights:
- I found an early Book of Frost, and I became an ice mage. Used ice beasts a lot.
- Later also started using Animate Dead.
- Vehumet did not gift anything useful.
- I met Mennas in the Vaults. I abandoned the whole vaults project, and went for the slimy rune instead.
- Glaciate is quite underwhelming for a level 9 spell. (No, Veh did not gift it, I found Annihilations in a shop).
- I made a silly mistake: went in a Zig, planning to do 5-6 floors, then went with the flow, and soon found myself on floor 11, -ctele and mummies... But using a couple of fog scrolls, ran around the edge to escape.
- The ascension was quite hard, lots of Pan lords.

Well, this is certainly my best character of the season so far; just cleared Lair 8, XL 14.32 and about to hit Orc. I usually steer clear of DE because of the squishiness, but my blasting options (Battlesphere + IMB/Fireball/Bolt Of Cold/Poison Arrow), with Haste as necessary (all hungerless at 1% failure; I've gone big on Spellcasting in order to accommodate Veh's goodies) make this a char to be reckoned with at the moment. Now training Fighting for HP.

I can't think of too much else; keep an eye out for a good weapon to burn my EW scrolls on; train Fighting and Dodging to improve defences; then back to Conjurations I guess, for increased killing power from my varied elemental magic attacks. I'm wearing an artefact Ring Mail as no good robes or leather have appeared; the stealth boots and that handy randart helmet were both in shops.

Should I stick with the amulet of faith for the game, or would clarity or resist mutation be a better bet should I find them? I know faith is good, but going to **** would leave me with all the nice Veh passives intact, and it's not a hard god to build piety for.

Faith can be bad for Vehumet, it made you rush with Spellcasting training. Keep wearing it if you like but replace instantly if you find amulet of conservation or (have Neqoxec in LoS and rMut in inventory).

Good point; as soon as I resumed play Veh offered me OoD, and I have but one spell level and one Amnesia scroll available. I'm also not sure what to forget out of my current spells; I don't use Dazzling Spray or Meph Cloud much, but I'm aware they could be very helpful in some situations. Perhaps Force Lance, though I am actually finding that useful.

You have IMB and Battlesphere, together those are in my opinion better than OoD in practically all situations.

Yeah, I love Battlesphere, and found that it gets even more amazing when accompanied by Dith's Shadow Mimic ability (I had to remind myself that Dith isn't allowed for CSDC chars). OoD wasn't on the table for very long anyway.

Well, I finally crashed this character in Vaults 5, with 3 runes. This makes it my second best run to date. I attach blame to tired and hurried decision-making, but I reckon I'm improving.
