And we're back! Yay!
So, off to an interesting start. I killed grinder and leveled up all while paralysed - I had thrown a spellbook at him (well, the orc wizard in front of him, really) and set it aflame...Didn't expect him to walk into the cloud, but he did, and poof, level 6.
The question I'm here to ask though, is heavy armor vs light armor. Merfolk are obviously designed for lighter armors, but I'm a fighter, and I went trog. I kind of want to go heavy. There's also a gold dragon armor in a shop. Normally not the best armor, but if I can get it early on and enchant it up, I might be willing to overlook the not dodging problem. But I don't think I'll reach 27 str unless I put all of my level ups into it...Guess it's going to be another FDA game

You would usually be better off with, say, fire dragon armour.

That should be an easier char than some of the previous one (though I died stupidly !!)
Good luck to all of you.
Having no webtiles access for some days, I'm playing the same MfFi offline. I think that a medium armour/bardiche/some throwing/support spells of Oka can do the job...

Going Trog and full str was my second option, but I found Oka first...
I guess that Fedhas is a pretty strong choice too

I like this combo. It seems reasonable, unlike some of the previous ones
Unfortunately, I was killed by Rupert in Lair:2. I teleported in time, using my only tele scroll (well, I found 2, but the first was used to ID it), but the teleport only put me to the other side of Rupert, only a few squares away. Then he berserked, and I was dead in a few turns.

Must...not...enter...ice...cave.
Oh, let's peek around. Hmm. Either ice dragon or frost giant ending, with lots of shaggy beasts. Die shaggy beasts.
Damn, frost giant ending. Kills me every time. But shiny treasure. Must...not...tangle...with...frost...giant.
Oh, have wand of hasting and some useful potions and Heroism. I can take him. Oh, wand of hasting had only one charge that I zap IDd with.
One...more...hit.
Damn, every time.

Why not Finesse?
My Ice Cave was crazy too
36622 | IceCv | Noticed an Ice Fiend
36671 | IceCv | Huge Dmg: 33 dmg
36677 | IceCv | Huge Dmg: 53 dmg
36678 | IceCv | Huge Dmg: 40 dmg
36692 | IceCv | Huge Dmg: 14 dmg
36695 | IceCv | Huge Dmg: 8 dmg
At this point a teleport landed me with 12 HP adjacent to Freezing Clouds (I had no rC+) and my hands started trembling, really weird/unusual feeling.
Edit. This is why permadeath games are really different from other games.

Bad strategy. Polearms 17 (22 after Heroism) with glaive would have been just fine, and would have purchased lots of skill for Invo + Fighting/Armor/Dodging, but I've been playing Trog recently, and forgot the Oka basics.

http://dobrazupa.org/morgue/tasonir/mor ... 194006.txtWell I at least got a rune, but I can't help but feel like that was a somewhat unfair death. I never found any source of magic resistance in the game, and eventually got banished to the abyss from an elf in vaults. Trog's hand does give MR, and I used it a plenty of times, but I didn't have it up for that elf sorcerer. Not enough piety to use it for everything
I did fairly well in abyss, but eventually found a lich, who confused me, again I have no magic resistance, and by the time the confuse wore off there wasn't much I could do. My kingdom for a curing potion! A summoned shadow fiend had already tormented off most of my hp. Quaffed speed, summoned a brother, tried to walk backwards...but the lich was also hasted, and then to add insult to injury, summoned an executioner. I wasn't going anywhere...
The RNG also tried to kill me in snake:5, where in a bad situation, I used teleport, to land in the rune chamber in a much worse position. So I teleported again, and landed...in the rune chamber. Really
Fortunately the fourth teleport was the charm, and landed me in cleared territory. In what would have been a perfectly fair death, I completely botched an encounter with Vashnia, and should have died, but managed to teleport out. Here I was quaffing curing potions while waiting for teleport, which is probably part of the reason I didn't have any left...

Well, I found a water moccasin on D:3, ran the heck away, dove to D:4 and found *another* water moccasin on D:4 before finding a down stair. I had used my (only id'd) ?blink to get away from the first one, and when I found the one on D:4 I used a ?tele, got away with almost no hps, but ended up close enough (Still in it's LOS) that he still killed me (I should've read another ?tele instead of using !HW, but I didn't have enough turns to have it make a difference anyway.) Probably I had some options I skipped and maybe I could've lived, but seriously, that's just nasty.
Edit: Looking at my message history, I must've hit some weird key or something, because somehow I ate a pear in combat against him right before I died (WTF happened there I wonder) I remember thinking it was weird that he seemed to take a lot of turns against me....

Maybe we should create a patch for confirmation to eat with monsters in LoS. But I am afraid it will not be accepted anyway, at least my patch for confirming haste/invisibility with gray contamination wasn't.

Hit Lair and 5% shy of XL12. Doing pretty well so far. I wanted to worship Oka, but found Trog instead in the temple and decided to make use of what was given to me. I had put my first two stat choices into Int, but whatever. It's crazy how fast Merfolk can level polearms. Found a nice ring in the shop (which I haven't bought) that gives rF rC rElec and rPois. Definitely gonna pick that up soon. I also found a ring in the shop that gives Ice and Dam+5. The slaying bonus is awesome, but I don't know if I want to walk around with fire vulnerability.
I also found Gourmand, which is awesome as a trog worshipper. Then a nice little wand of hasting from a Wight nice enough to die and give it to me. Feel pretty good about the mid game.

I can't say that I have. Although I found this weird glitch that happens. When I press "a" then "b", I get a really big boost to my MR. ;-P
And Sandman, I'm very inexperienced with Jumping, but why is it beneficial for Trog? Do you mean because sometimes Zerk expires against enemies that keep range by blinking and stuff like that?

No, I meant that it is very useful to attack casters/ranged monsters in the open when you have no room to run away. Also it allows to retreat sometimes, Trog characters don't have Haste/cBlink. Jumping at Orb of Fire with anti-magic weapon can be very good, just don't jump into unexplored area

Trog, you little jerk...
Well, I was doing fine with my +1, +9 Demon trident of venom +2 Str, +Stealth and my +0, +4 Anti Magic bardiche when trog grants me a Glaive. My weapons are good, but I think..."Maybe it's Vampiric? That'd be sweet!"
Little bastard gifted me distortion. He might as well be Xom... =\
So, how do I safely unwield this?

@diviton: I used that 'glitch' 51 times. You'll find it can lower your piety somehow, should probably open up a bug report.
Also, there's no way to safely unwield distortion, unless you count "being strong enough and having all the supplies you need to safely run the abyss". In good news you probably won't get banished, I thikn the odds are only around 10-20%? I don't recall exactly. It usually doesn't banish you, but the banish chance also isn't super small. Good luck!

Other ways to 'safely' unwield distortion include having TSO/Kiku rebrand it (By switching to them and getting to max piety) Or by having Xom animate it (Of course at that point you're being attacked by a distortion weapon which might banish you anyway)

Well, I went back to my stash, picked up my scroll of vulnerability in case of some serious magic contamination as well as any consumables I'd want for an early trip to the Abyss... only got teleported and confused. NICE!
Honestly, I might have survived an Abyss trip at XL15, but it's too early for me to want one. Cleared Lair, Orc and Dungeon. Spider and Swamp are next. Should I stick with this Demon Trident and maybe pick up a shield, or just pump my EW scrolls into this Anti-Magic Bardiche?

Personal highlight so far: Strolling around in Crypt with my silent spectre buddy in the search for Khufu (I knew he was there because of a greater mummy).

If you are planning on going Oka > X god, then I would reconsider. Oka wrath has become unbelievably harsh. Perhaps that is as intended, perhaps it needs adjustment. In any event, the rate is absolutely insane. I've had 8-10 hostile summons in a very short time, with titans, blade masters, master archers, draconian packs (which appear to count as 1 monster, since they show up with 3-5 other monster types so you get 4-5 dracs and 3-5 others by my rough estimate), and the typical giants.
And I'm out. Oka wrath was too much. What a nasty $#%%$# surprise and deeply disappointing to see such a big change. I'm pretty pissed off by this.

Damn, that is really rough. I think playing in Trunk has caused a lot more problems like this than I anticipated (partially due to the high frequency of important changes being made by the devs - not a bad thing overall, but unfortunate for this competition). This is making me very strongly consider switching to last stable release for next season, though we will stick with Trunk for the remainder of this season at least.
I guess a silver lining is that your experience helped contribute to the wrath being toned down today. Definite bummer about your game though.

Most people are playing trunk online. This would require participants of the competition to keep the mechanics of the last stable release in mind despite being accustomed to different ones due to their regular games. I would surely forget that killing a summoner does not remove summons in pre-0.14.
If the challenge was 0.13 I would not participate.

Right, these are all part of why I strongly prefer trunk. But the volatility has been bad all season, thus my rethinking. For the record, it would almost certainly be 0.14 stable by the time season 2 would start.

WalkerBoh: people have problems playing "old" stable during the tournament releases, when those relases are actually quite fresh. I couldn't see myself playing a tournament in stable pver weeks. To me, the volatility is not a big concern: there is even more variance in monsters and loot of the first few floors. In my opinion, this should be more about fun than about competition.

Playing trunk is better in my opinion even if it leads to unfortunate deaths - what keeps me here are changes and returning to "old" 0.13 would bore me to death.
In case of a drastic change to Trunk that affects an open combo, players who completed the open combo will have the option to replay it once. If replayed, the 2nd score will stand even if the 1st score is higher.
Could we apply the ruling in this case? The combo is still open and as I understood, Oka's wrath has been toned down after MrPlanck's "adventure". It is arguable, though, whether the change was drastic.

Well, I would prefer to play in 0.11 (it is by far the best version in my eyes), but I realize that it is not a popular idea

Doing vaults, I encountered some weird things.
1. Does Restore Abilities no longer remove draining?
2. Why do Ironheart Preservers suddenly die for no reason now? I've had it happen twice where I'll be attacking an enemy adjacent to an Ironheart Preserver and it will suddenly die. My initial tholught was maybe Bardiches got some sort of cleaving, but it wasn't happening to others, then I realized it might be something to do with them "Preserving" other enemies?

1. Yup. That change (restore ab restoring some life force) never made it to an official release anyway.
2. Presevers always had an injury bond where they take damage on behalf of monsters they are protecting. It doesn't work well though if you're doing a ton of damage so it looks like they just die out of the blue. I think the player version (new spell: summon guardian golem) has similar issues.

This might be a good solution, especially considering how many other changes were made yesterday. Let me think on it and I will make the decision tonight before I announce week 7's character.
And thank you all for the feedback.

That bums me about about draining. I really liked the idea that restore abilities would reduce draining. Drain can be very hard to avoid and depending on how bad it is, can be almost impossible to recover from. If you're doing late game and you're badly drained, good luck finding things to kill. I suppose this is just incentive to be cautious as soon as drain appears, but I liked RA poyions as a sorta cure because its not like they're super common anyway.

I decided to go ahead with the redo rule for this week, in light of the number and weight of changes made to Trunk yesterday. Everyone who started their game before 7pm EST on 3/6 gets one redo chance (you do not get an extra redo if you die with XL<4).
If you choose to take the redo, your score in the redo will be your challenge score, regardless of whether it was higher than your original score. The list of players eligible for the redo:
- Code:
[17:16:28] WalkerBoh !lg csdc mffi start>20140301 start<20140307 s=name o=-.
[17:16:29] Sequell 23 games for csdc (mffi start>20140301 start<20140307): aspy, caleba, dpeg, fearitself, glosham, HenryFlower, Igxfl, Magipi, moose, mopl, MorganLeah, MrPlanck, Sandman25, Seigurt, stickyfingers, tasonir, TedronaiSDC, TeshiAlair, WalkerBoh

WalkerBoh: oh, the temptation....
But I think my MfFi death in the Abyss is quite legitimate.
I have one question about two columns in the spreadsheet: what is the difference between Average Ranking and Overall Ranking.
In my case (Division 3 -- above my level): Overall Ranking 21 says that if all players were listed according to tournament points, then I'd sit at spot 21 -- right? That does indeed put my in the fourth division (which is what the Average Ranking of 4.7 indicates, I assume), but there seems to be a minor mismatch with calaba who gets assigned spot 20 (better than me), yet Average Ranking 4.8 (worse than me).
Thanks for undertaking all of this! It's certainly a lot of work... I am enjoying this tournament very much. Have played and seen things I else wouldn't have touched with a cursed +6 polearm.

I've been away a few days and missed a lot! I am glad to see wrath toned down though I do hope that it will be a good challenge.
I like trunk and would prefer to risk it than use an older version.
I was not anticipating a replay scenario and am not sure if I will do it. Winless 3 runes seems pretty okay. Hmm
I do want to thank you for putting on this challenge, WalkerBoh. The sudden death games are intense.

Dpeg: The average ranking (division) is displaying your average ranking for the challenges compared to others within your division only. So you rank 4.7th within your division on average and 21st overall on average. The division ranking probably isn't terribly useful, I admit.
And I'm glad you guys are enjoying it. I've had fun running it as well.

My first online win and 14th win overall. Managed to get the Zig challenge, but that was pretty easy. This combo was a good roll. Mf are powerful and fighters have a nice start. Didn't really have too much trouble except for a Vault Warden ruining my Vault:5 stairdancing and I got a little tense. No really close calls though. Smooth sailing for the most part.
Oh, except no Conservation the whole game! Grrrr!

I ended up replaying. As soon as I saw that the next challenge was tengu skald, I knew I was in trouble and needed some extra points out of my merfolk.
Had a very rough game though and fell to a hill giant when I should have tried running away instead of fighting. Then I played tengu skald and went XL4 and out. So now I'm in even direrererer straits.

This week was a good week! RNG graciously placed Trog's altar on D:2, which allowed me to almost effortlessly get through early and mid game. Although some people had bad experiences with god's wrath recently, I decided to check how much luck had I left. I abandoned Trog for good cause - TSO namely. Wrath wasn't bad nor trivial, either. My late decision caused me to deal with it in places where it was really risky (abyss and hell).
I have found a lot of rN sources, so I decided to continue god shuffling and took Zin for additional protection in extended. Besides of small food issues (I had to manage it at some point quite carefully), the decision paid off. I have gotten all 15 runes and set new CSDC high score. Ereshkigal's Executioners, I dare you to beat it!
