I trained maces first for a great mace, than went for tornado. I found shadow creatures, so I learned that first. Maybe it was stupid plan because I still cannot cast tornado without brilliance, but I had no better idea.

I did not found haste as a spell, and I have just acquired a wand of hasting finally. Of course my last speed potions broke when Xom decided to swap me into my own freezing cloud.

My closest time to die was when I failed to notice that Xom swapped my great mace to a glavie. Always keep a second weapon at hand! (and really watch Xom's actions.)

Still going strong so far. Cleared lair, orcish mines and most of the dungeon. I think this is one of the most intense runs I've had so far. The clarity amulet and a -Tele ring seem to prevent a lot of Xom's bullshit. Also going for Unarmed Combat looks like it is pretty viable for this combo...

Xom roars with laughter!

http://crawl.develz.org/morgues/trunk/sanka/morgue-sanka-20140205-095447.txt

I aquired the abyssal rune as the first rune, got the orb, and... died on the ascension.

A pandemonium lord appeared, that seemed to be faster than me (even when I was hasted). I fighted him alone in a small chamber (with two staircases), and I seemed to be killing him fast enough, but then he paralysed me.

Oh well, I forgot to equip back my magic resistance ring after a rest. Paralysation is still the most awful feature of the game for me.

Xom laughs nastily!

Such a shame :( You had a really awesome set of mutations... However you should have wore some MR rings instead of two times regen. Probably would have saved you from paralyze...

Oh sorry I missed that. Was there really no way to escape? Usually it is a viable method to run onto a staircase and evoke the fan of gales for fast pan lords...

Re: CSDC Week 2 - DrCK

Hm, I should do that. Good idea for next time, thanks!

Actually I could beat him I think if she would not paralysed me. But fighting with a pan lord on the ascension is not a good idea, so it was my fault.

Also, I did not remember that the pan lord has actually casted anything, he seemed to hit me and then I was paralysed. Maybe he had a chaos weapon? But I did not see any Xom action either. I guess chaos weapon paralysation does not check MR, so if it was the case, the MR ring would not help me. I guess I should not fight random pan lords next time.

I have no idea how I survived the abyss... After an ancient lich nearly one-shotted me I teleported around with about 20 HP for what felt an eternity. As a bonus I had the temporary mutation "you do not heal naturally" :D

Now I have no more consumables left. Guess I'll have to do the Vaults, initially I wanted to skip them completely...

Re: CSDC Week 2 - DrCK

CK is really weird background. Early amulet of stasis made everything easy, really close to a typical Gl, later I found amulet of clarity so I even can safely use escape methods sometimes. Perhaps CK should start with stasis amulet. It's weird but I almost never use amulet of conservation. This is not a tournament game though.

I died to having an amulet of stasis on; I think you just had the luck of a Xom who did more teleports than nasty monster summons.

Yes, I know what you are talking about. Stasis-swapping is main feature of Xom player IMHO. About to enter new level - put the amulet on. Seriously wounded - put it on. Barely escaped from a dangerous monster - put it on.

You are obviously missing this:
  Code:
S - the ring "Thruokkumn" (left hand) {-Tele Acc+5 Dam+5}
(You found it on level 8 of the Lair of Beasts)

Edit:
Or this (from another game of mine):
  Code:
 d - the amulet "Coytiutu" (around neck) {rMut -Tele Acc+4 Dam+4 SInv}
(You bought it in a shop on level 4 of the Orcish Mines)

No, I am not missing it. It's very useful, I know. I was confused several times while wearing amulet of stasis so I am envying you ;) Good luck!

I too got spanked by Xom lightning balls. If I hadn't been wearing stasis, I could have possibly blinked away. Maybe I should have unwielded my disto mace.

Re: CSDC Week 2 - DrCK

Fucked it up and died like a bitch in Zot:5. Abyss nearly destroyed all my consumables and I could not get much back in Vaults:1-4. Needed more means of teleportation, 5 charges of a wand were not enough. Should have bought the tele ring in one of the orc shops. Had enough turns in my last moments for it to be evoked... Would have been another chance to get away...

It is kind of depressing to have to sit in the corner of one of the upper lungs in the hall of zot knowing that two ancient liches are closing on you...

Well damn...

Good job making it so far though. I enjoyed reading your dump file, and especially got a kick out of Xom turning Asterion into an agate snail.

I'm glad Abyss first seemed sufficiently tough. Do you have any feedback about that?

I really wanted to see what this new unique is about, Xom didn't give me any chance :(

WalkerBoh wrote:I'm glad Abyss first seemed sufficiently tough. Do you have any feedback about that?

It was the most intense experience I've ever had in crawl and probably one of the hardest situations I've ever had to solve in this game. My Zot:5 intermezzo does not count since there was nothing more I could do there. Simply was not ready for being able to reliably handle Zot:5.

Getting the abyss rune first is definitely a worthy tier-2 bonus challenge (especially with mandatory Xom). Did you match up the bonus with CK on purpose or would this have been the bonus regardless of the combo choice? Because I still think that the bonus won't be that hard if you could do it with a god of your own choosing.

Re: CSDC Week 2 - DrCK

I pick each bonus specifically based on which character is selected for the week. This week was Abyss themed because that's a signature dick move of Xom.

I'm glad it was tough! Though in hindsight I admit CK is probably not the best challenge choice since most players' games ended very early through no fault of their own.

Re: CSDC Week 2 - DrCK

I abandoned Xom at Vaults and went the Oka-TSO route to get 15 runes. I initially wanted to keep Xom the whole game, but after such a poor showing in round 1, I decided to play it safe and try to make up some ground. I also gave up on the bonuses at that point.

Xom was actually pretty good overall because of the positive mutations. There was a noticeable downgrade in power after I lost all of those. I just didn't like the teleporting around and random summons in the Vaults, and didn't want to keep stasis on.

Yeah you're still in the competition. Anyone who hasn't been active for 3 challenges, I might consider replacing, but I'll judge that as it comes up.

Re: CSDC Week 2 - DrCK

I just lost my DrCK, and I can't even blame Xom for the death! Morgue for the curious:

http://crawl.develz.org/morgues/trunk/D ... 071002.txt

Got held by a net (thrown by a keep-away siren, dammit) while an impaler poked away at me with a trident of flaming. Tele didn't go off in time. I had bad luck with the net (I failed to escape 3 or 4 times, I think), plus that impaler got a double move in, it looks like. Should have tried Solitude card instead. Didn't help that I dropped my potions to cast Fridge, or that I didn't go back for a scroll earlier to recharge my healing wand. So many mistakes...

Anyway enough of that, I want to talk about the positives! Xom was a blast. I guess it's because I'm a bad player, so I'm used to effing myself over. Going with Xom just meant playing more carefully and letting Xom eff me over instead.

I had a little early game luck:

  Code:
3231 | D:3      | Identified the +3,+7 crossbow of Stiad {speed, Str+2} (Xom gifted it to you on level 3 of the Dungeon)

Which pretty much carried me through the game. I probably could have won the game with this too, alas.

Some memorable Xom moments:

* In Lair:2, Xom polymorphed a wandering mushroom into a thorn hunter(!) when it was only 2 or 3 steps away. I didn't think I could get away, so I engaged in a shootout instead. I won (barely), but it was a definite crap in your pants moment.

* In a rather foolhardy move, I engaged with a frost giant in an Ice cave. I had most of the level clear, so I figured I could tele away if things go bad. Halfway through the battle, Xom took a hand and enslaved the frost giant for me. With frost giant buddy, we ripped through the rest of the Ice cave, incidentally (and helpfully) getting the frost giant down to "almost dead". Even with that, it took me forever to finish him off, so that was a very solid favor Xom did me there.

* Sometime in Lair, I was plinking away at a spiny frog with my sling while it approached, when Xom decided to berserk me. I decided what the heck and bludgeoned the frog to death with my sling anyway (and that is why I have 8 sling melee actions on my record).

* In Lab, Xom took me on a teleport journey... while I was in the middle of a fight with the minotaur. Took me a while to get back too.

Plus some non-Xom moments that are very worthy of a Xom game:

* I was Abyssed by Xom, but found an exit fairly quickly while being chased by a bone dragon. I tried to ascend and ... what? Why am I still in Abyss? At first I thought Xom did the stair slipping trick on me again (which he did earlier), but it turned out that the bone dragon had trampled me off the exit. Xom thinks it's hilarious!

* I spotted Agnes and decided Fridge was the best way to handle her. So I dropped my curing pots, took a step back to let my ice beast come up next to me, and started spamming Fridge. Agnes of course steps right up to the spot I vacated, but then grabs my curing pots and starts chugging away! Boy did I feel stupid. It wasn't like the ice beast was able to hit her anyway. On the bright side, sacrificing some curing pots in exchange for Agnes not trying to kill me for a few turns was maybe worthwhile.

Anyway, yeah I had fun, and I like that the weekly challenge is pushing me to try some combos that I wouldn't have done on my own. I guess there's more Xom in my future crawling.

Re: CSDC Week 2 - DrCK, CLOSED

Man, when Xom wants you dead, he gets you dead. Blurry vision 3, reduced hp, and sent to the abyss at XL 13. I made it out somehow by using all my consumables, and then by the time I got to D14 I got sent on a second abyss trip, this one packed full of liches, balrugs, executioners, reapers, and the like. I was running from a reaper with a scythe of dragon slaying (thanks game) after having killed the first balrug, lich, and executioner when he decided to confuse me again -- and that was after I'd already been forced to drink all my curing potions by previous confusions and a balrug. RIP.

I was really starting to think I could survive with this character . . .

Re: CSDC Week 2 - DrCK, CLOSED

If Xom wants you dead, switch to Trog! At XL12, Xom was mollified and I could proceed without a lot of stress. Still, it was not cakewalk. I do not agree that draconians are very strong species, although they have a lot of HPs and in theory fine AC. Lack of GDR makes them mediocre, though. Even with large shield and good EV I was getting hurt a lot. Maybe I am simply biased - I favor characters with HP below typical, but good defenses.

Too bad the game didn't grant me any challenge points, but at least I had streak win without frustration.
