Player Dolls

My attempt at improving some of the player character sprites:
-Remade the genie sprite, adding a female variation and transparency. On a side note, Djinns should probably have the bottom part of their armor cut off similar to nagas and centaurs, they look really weird wearing robes right now.
-Drew an enemy minotaur that can wield weapons; I've changed the player dolls to reflect the new look.
-The demonspawn sprites are impossible to see given how dark the game's background is. I've redrawn them to better suit the other visuals.
-Merfolk and orcs haven't received a visual rework in a while and don't really match the look of any enemy sprites of the same species. I tried to make them look more consistent.
-I've also attempted to expand the list of available hair styles for anyone who likes to customize their character's look.

If any of these are useful, I can make some color swaps for additional variety.

tbh, I don't particularly like these, especially minotaur, he looks like he wants to take a dump while standing

The place you're really going to want to put this is mantis.

Thanks. It's my first time posting, so I wasn't sure where this was supposed to go. Should all graphic uploads go directly to mantis then?

I already said something harsh and then you post this... I think this creates a bad image of the forum(or at least us). I was quite serious, though. One more thing about that minotaur doll - why does it face the right? I really hope at least that doll won't get approved.

Thanks for clarifying that you were serious, I thought you were trolling when I first read your post. If you think your comment give the forum a bad image, then why post it? Nothing you've said has really been constructive as far as criticism is concerned, but I'll go ahead and address your critique anyways.

The legs are bent because there is a 32 pixel height limit on the sprites, which in reality is actually 30 pixels due to the black outlines. Given that, if you're trying to make a tall character there are only a few ways to go about it:
-Change the perspective. This is partially the way that tall characters are done currently and the way the other minotaur sprite was structured.
-Bend the legs, spine and otherwise compress the sprite. This is the method I chose to go with as it seemed more fitting for the minotaur, and is actually a pretty common depiction of minotaurs in general. It's also being used on a whole bunch of sprites that are currently in the game so please extend your vivid interpretation to those as well.
-Try to make the sprite take up as much of the box as possible. This is also what's being done for some of the giant characters currently, the downside is that it gives the sprite a blocky appearance. This was one of the problems with the other minotaur sprite, so I tried to avoid turning it into a cube this time around.

It's facing right because all draconians, hydras, half of all the orcs, moths and a bunch of other monsters I can't even recall are facing right. Not really sure sure what you're trying to dig at there.

I don't have other dolls before my eyes, but really this minotaur doll won't do, imagine this minotaur moving to the left, this would be very weird

My comment was actually just a silly reference to what popped into my head when I read the thread title, Because JoCo is awesome and his songs stick in my head sometimes.

Nothing to do with the sprites themselves (I don't play tiles at all, because all tiles ever created for any game I've ever seen look weird and awkward to me, so I am not going to venture an opinion on these particular sprites.)

It'd be just like a hydra moving to the left.

Uh. Amnesiac, the Minotaur sprite you're looking at is clearly a monster tile; the minotaur player dolls are next to them. As, indeed, the OP explained. Please pay attention to what you're looking at before you say something critical about it.

These look great in general. Thanks for posting them.

I don't understand why are you telling me to pay attention... What do you think did I pay attention to while wrighting my opinion specifically about that monster tile. Oh and I fully realise that that's a monster tile, that doesn't change the fact that I think that it would look strange to me. I'm sorry that I'm critical, but that's because this matters to me, because I always play tiles and pay attention to them, and I like how most of them look, unlike some other games graphics

How about you pay attention to the words you're using. Calling the minotaur tile a doll makes it sound like you think it's a new player tile.

I'm sorry if I caused misunderstanding. However it should be clear what I'm talking ablout if you read the part about that tile facing to the right. I didn't mean to be mean, so don't say stuff like "how about you blah-blah". Picking on my words won't accomplish anything. My point was to make it clear how much I disliked that tile, so it would actually look like opinion and not just abstract talk. I deliberately chose those words to attract attention to them, so that other people who happen to agree with me, would join me in this. Once again, I want it to be clear that I didn't want to offend anyone personally and I didn't want to expressly make someone feel bad, even if I did make them feel bad as a result.

It's not clear at all why you're harping on the minotaur facing one direction. As has been pointed out already, numerous existing monster tiles face a direction. (Check out frogs, for instance.)

In-game, do blink frogs have a big chunk missing from their leg? Perhaps to represent phase shifting or something? Or is that display an artifact of the way transparent colors are represented in png files?

That's what the wiki says is the Blink Frog tile.

Except you have no point at all since as we can clearly see, multiple monsters (and even the player dragon form tile) already face in different directions.

Oh, and either you were out of your mind or
Amnesiac wrote:One more thing about that minotaur doll - why does it face the right? I really hope at least that doll won't get approved.

you were indeed calling the minotaur sprite a player doll.

It definitely looks rather awkward with those squatting legs, but there's nothing wrong with the fact that it's not centered. (Though it does seem a bit too directional to me, but only a bit.)

The faded part is transparent. The effect is much less jarring in front of a dark dungeon floor.

E: I also think the minotaur is meant to be wielding something, so the empty space in the top-left corner would be at least partially filled in.

It just catched my eyes. You know, I might not be 100% happy with some monsters always facing one side, too. Rats are also like that. But I think while for popcorn monsters it's ok because you spend fraction of a second on tabbing through them, for a monster like minotaur that you need to pay attention to, design needs to be well though out. I hope you understand what I mean. There is a degree of facing, too, and this tile is also inclined, which makes caches my eye even more.
Bloax wrote:(Though it does seem a bit too directional to me, but only a bit.)

See? See?!
Anyway, I just described how I perceived it, what's the point in trying to prove me that I am wrong, using some harsh words? While my point is as I said, your point seems to be just to argue against me

Some tiles, noticeably the alters, have multiple sprites. Is it possible for some monsters to have this (perhaps some already do), not too many since it would bloat the overall size of crawl but some monsters seem like they would benefit well with such an "animated" look, like the blink frog.

Made troll and ogre sprites. Don't think these ones turned out as well as the others, but there's only so much one can do for larger characters. Some bonus hairstyles too, with the first four made specifically for ogres and trolls.

From the Tile Design Guide:

Ideally, both monsters and items should be depicted at a slight angle from the front or side, so you can see both its face and profile.

These are player dolls, not monsters; all current player character sprites are facing directly forward. The monster minotaur sprite I drew on the other hand is at a 3/4 view.

I think galehar's quote was directed at the people making complaints about the monster tile facing sideways (and pointing out that this is totally fine and desirable).

Mostly just a minor color tweak, since I like more pale blue.

I like some of the ideas in this edit, but wanted to keep the sprite colors more consistent, so I redrew the djinns to look somewhat closer to your version. I also remembered that demonspawn had an enemy sprite so I made a new one. Besides that I made ghoul models easier to see, added a new human doll variation and drew a few new hair and beard sets.
