Monsterglyph in Tiles - aka 'new font for the game'

So I was thinking;

Since I like playing both tiles and console version,
(I usually have both .exe in the same directory, to be able to save and continue playing the other version, though I got
some problems getting this with .13-trunk running atm. (sometimes it crashes on startup).)

How about combining both and have a nice Font for Crawl, so I was searching trough my old stuff and threw some letters on a sheet of paper: (Luckily I still had a bottle of ink.)

As you can see I'am barely literate /sarcasm - it looks bad.
And 4mm was the biggest quill I could find.

Thinknig of was I was going for I first thought of Fraktur:

But I guess most people will have some trouble with the upper case letters.

So there is the Rotunda:

So why not a mix of both of them.
This brings us back to the first picture,
someone would have to draw this letters and as you can see I am not very qualified.

Other thing is Tiles are sqare and most letters tend to get vertical.
But I think it's still manageable.

Then there would be the matter of them blending in.
One could just give them a black bg and be done, whitch will mess up the look.
Colored letters on transparent bg also don't sound so appealing,
because thinking of fighting an orc wizard in water don't sounds so good for the eyes.
Maybe a toggle function between the actual montster and the letter, the letter could even keep it's polearm equipped if people think they missing something.
toggle: normal view - letter instead of monster - letter on black bg

This is an very old idea I got when tiles become more and more popular.

As you can see there are some obstiacal to overcome.
I really have no desire to do some actual work on this!
Hell, even drawing and typing this took me nearly half an afternoon.
But I can imagine that some one might enjoy this.

I found birdfont.org whitch looks fairly easy.
Work to be done as far as I can imagine, and this the most lousy I can phrase that:
Draw nice big letters, scan them in, color 'em and let them replace the monstertile.

Before anybody starts working on this, I'am more interested what people think of this idea and if anybody ever would play it?

Be honest, truth is a bitch!

Well, glyph mode is a thing that exists - hit F10 on webtiles. Changing the font would probably be pretty easy, but fancy blackletter is gonna murder your eyes pretty quick. As for hand-drawing our own font, uh.

I'm not sure what to say about that.

Actually I would love to draw some letters, thing is, I really not got a lot of time to spare,
and like everything in life, if you want something done correctly - do it yourselfe.

I can write letters in fraktur just for fun, I don't need my handwriting as .ttf

Step II would like be, bring all the other ASCII-characters in this .ttf
Step III, create a 'new' console-like where you can switch from 'Ascii' to this new 'Neo-Ascii'

Step XLIX, merge console+tiles+neo-tiles in one 100% offline game where you may select your prefered display variant.
(I know, 'they' want you to play online, but i prefer to play on a deserted island with a solarpanel) (thats for F10 online)

Just to get the Alphabeth I would need over 1 month, not sure if people would be interested they wanna wait like for ever..

//post scriptum:
What I really want to say was:
If someone thinks this 'work' may be fun, be my guest, but it would be nice to have 'all the ascii characters' to renew the look of the game enough.

You may think I was jokeing?

I tried some A's, this took me an fing hour!

Does anyone of theese look like an angel beeing?
I don't think so.

Thats not even 1/50 from the glyphs needed.
It would be easyer to paint them in Windows-paint,
seriously - select a calligrap-pencil and try it.

So not getting done one letter in an afternoon clearly says: stay away.

Just bringing glyph-mode to offline-play and select some free font is
exactly what I would'nt want, but take it anyday over 50 hour's of
drawing letters to perfection. (Just to get a hard physical copy).

Maybe when crawl reaches V1.0...
(thats not V0.100)

Re: Monsterglyph in Tiles - aka 'new font for the game'

Yeah, it took me about 4 hours to do the letters for my wedding, and that was just two capital letters intertwined (Of course I spent a lot of time with different styles to try to get the right one)

The problem with digital font design in general is that you can't just scan a letters scale them down, professional font sizing uses all sorts of vector algorithms and hinting to get the letters to scale properly and look good at at resolutions which are actually good for the intended use.

The problem for *crawl* is that the font needs to be fixed-width and that's just not a popular style any longer for digital fonts, so there's not a whole lot of fonts designed for consoles that work, and ones that work *and* have all the funny little glyphs that we like to have for walls and such are even rarer.

That being said, here's a source for some monospaced fonts, that don't have any rights issues, that I resource fairly often:

Also here's some instructions on adding an installed font as one available for console windows:

Re: Monsterglyph in Tiles - aka 'new font for the game'

So, the kinda like I imagine my letters ingame:
Spoiler: show
Image
The text is from Wilhelm Bush "Max und Moritz" -1865.

Of course there would not just be one kind of any given letter;
some diferent colored o's that looks slightly different.
Still - all just being conceptional.

This was a 1.8*10^(-3) meter quill,
Also I found some swan-feather's today who are a little bigger.
(i feed them sometimes nearby, and the left them, no animals where hurt in gathering this feathers)

If I had the time, place and money I would throw them on a wall and photograph them for what It's worth...
this was actually my first thought..

Maybe I'll finish the story, one day, given time.
