Ugly Crystal Plate redesign

Since I randomly decided to do this, because the current "Crystal" plate looks nothing like it's made of crystal. Not to mention that it looks outdated, and ugly too.
But enough with the bashing, here's a (slight) edit of the plate armor (great tile, you whoever did it) That makes it shiny and somewhat crystal-ish.

Unfortunately I'm no pixel-master, I can do some, but this is kind of outside my n00b-league.

tl;dr, Have a tile:

And how it would probably, maybe, AND PERHAPS (GASP) look in "teh" game:

I should probably move that right shoulder a pixel down.
No idea how I'd make special versions of it, however.

I'd like to see it a lot brighter. "Crystal" says "shiny" to me, plus you want a big visual statement of "awesome thing here!"

Yeah, I'd like to see the color differentiated from the green colored dragon armors a bit more. Looks good, though :)

How would this be?
Image

The reason it's so dark is because I'm more comfortable working in a wide range of brightness mapping (You see, I use gradient maps to colorize it.) - Because all this chromatic(-ish) lighting stuff requires some nitpicky details.
Which is obviously hard to create when it all becomes borked if you hold the pen there for (literally) a bit too long.

And that can happen easily when instead of this range:

You use this:

Re: Ugly Crystal Plate redesign

Crystal usually means translucent. All previous CPM tiles have been white or light blue to simulate this.

Re: Ugly Crystal Plate redesign

Why simulate translucency when you can make it actually translucent?

And yea, I usually think of a bluish when I think of crystal... although green crystal is not out of the question. It usually reserved for emerald though.

I'm not too sure about that navy blue recolor. That's more adamantine then crystal.

There is actually still a new crystal plate tile lying aroung on Mantis, it just lacks glowing/artefact variants.

Re: Ugly Crystal Plate redesign

Actually, now that I think of it the "why not" might be because tiles isn't set up to display translucent armors on the player doll. It might not know what to show behind the armor.

Not true. Player dolls are just tiles stacked on top of each other. First the body, then each of the equipment tiles. These tiles already have transparency. All tiles have transparency, it's the area of the tile that's "empty". Since the tiles use png images, partial transparency is also usable.

Re: Ugly Crystal Plate redesign

Hurrah! I was just thinking of excuses for why it may not work; I find it odd no one has made translucent armour before, especially considering we have something like CPM in the game.

Thanks but I can't really take the credit for those, I just took Roctavian's CPM design and added some transparency.

So... who wants to see a female deep elf in a translucent armor?

Man, this shit is borderline pornographic.

* suddenly, CPM becomes the most popular armor in the game *

edit. also, I uploaded these CPM designs here: https://crawl.develz.org/mantis/view.php?id=4791
