Iron Shot is a bad name for this spell for three reasons:

1) The graphic animation looks like a crossbow bolt firing.
2) The English definition of shot, are small pellets, like what is in a shotgun shell. (that's why its called a "shot"gun)
3) If you fire a shotgun, you are not likely to miss, instead you are likely partially hit a target, and also there would be more of a cone shaped damage area (at range, or if it is a sawed off shotgun)

The reason to change it to Stone Javelin is simple. Javelin is the most powerful throwing weapon in the game, and presently there is no spell to simulate it. It would be cool to replace the "bolt" graphic with the "javelin" graphic, because the magic does not behave has other bolt magic, since it is single-target.

Alternatively, we could also call this spell "Stone Spear" since it has similar behaviour to Lehudib's Crystal Spear.

What do you like better, Stone Javelin or Stone Spear?

I always assumed that "shot" refered to this definition:

In most dictionaries, something to that effect is #1. The shotgun relation is secondary.

In addition, being able to clearly distinguish between spells is the most important factor, and I find "Iron Shot" more unlike "Stone arrow" and "Lehudib's Crystal Spear" than any of your proposals.

Shot, as a verb, or describing a verb, is different from the noun "shot" - I heard the gunshot.. or nice shot! This definition is used to describe an action, not the name of a spell.

The other spells do not follow this naming convention, they are more descriptive .. bolt of fire, fire storm, lehudib's crystal spear, summon xxx. Names should clearly say what it is, in my opinion.

I like Iron Javelin too :-)

Google "iron shot" in google image search Reaver. See the photos that come up. What you will see are small round iron pellets or photos of golf. Both of which are not what we want to imagine when casting this spell. A good spell name should create a good visual image in your head. We can all agree about that, right?

Google image search is not going to give you an accurate representation of most spells.
For example, "throw icicle" results in a lot of images of throw pillows. That's not going to be damaging anything in the dungeon.

A case can certainly made for Iron Shot being a fairly lame spell name, but I don't really think that most people would automatically correlate it with a shotgun/pellet. The first thought that came to me upon seeing this spell was that I was literally shooting someone with iron. The second though was that this sounded really boring and lame and I wanted to find a cooler sounding spell.

Firion, yes but at least everyone knows what an icicle is. Ask someone on the street "what is a shot?" and they might say, oh you mean the sound? basketball shot? shot at golf? Don't you think javelin is cooler than "shot"? at least everyone knows what it is.

I agree, Deimos.. I just want the lame spell name to sound more cool.

In fact, "Launch Icicle" sounds better than "Throw Icicle".. because you are not literally throwing it with your arm like you would a baseball.

Preference of "lance" myself, in conjunction with crystal/diamond.

Actually, I always thought Iron Shot was a bunch of iron pellets. But they were behaving more like they were shot out of a heavily choked shotgun, so their spread would be pretty minimal. Enough to the point that they could be treated as a single projectile.

Or, if you prefer, sort of like a kid picking up a fist-full of gravel and throwing it at someone. There's definite spread and all, but evading every piece of gravel is hardly out of the question if the target isn't slow.

An iron shot is a big 'ol iron spheroid, that you might throw in someone's face to turn it to mush.

Note that the graphic for the Iron Shot projectile is intended to look like a bullet (but not too much, not to be distracting), because I always imagined my EEs pointing their index fingers and shooting "BANG" as the vocal/somatic components of casting the spell.

While we're bikeshedding, I would move to call it "IRON LASER BEAM."

Yeah, I always thought of it as the shot from a shot put being fired through the air at high velocity.

Took 18 images to get "interesting", 6 of which were directly related to Crawl, starting with image 2. The first image was a pretty house with a terrible porch add-on next to it.

I am not a native speaker, but "iron shot" doesn't necessarily mean the small pellets in shotgun ammo. If anything, those pellets are made of lead, and I don't think anyone refers to them as *iron* shots.

Iron shot, also called cannonball, is the ammo that was used on ships' cannons in the past.
