Um... is this supposed to mean something?

A book named like a random scroll, and has an umlaut on it. Never seen something like this before.

"Axaxaxas mlö" is not a random phrase. It is from Borges's story "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius". It's a fragment of the Tlönian language, which has no nouns, only verbs. He reuses it in "The Library of Babel", as the title of...a random book.

I think it might really need a good description, then.

Oh so it does actually mean something. Agree with MyOtheHedgeFox. 2~3 lines of descriptions wouldn't hurt.

It's an artefact, not a named spell book, so the description probably can't be set. That's just one of the many set name parts that can be chosen.

There is a punctuation mark in English that looks exactly like the umlaut but is not. It's called a diaeresis and its function is to indicate that two adjacent vowels are to be pronounced separately, not together as in monophthongs and diphthongs. For example, coöperate is marked so as to make clear that it is not coop-erate.

Of course it's now usually written co-operate or even cooperate. Use of the diaeresis has fallen off considerably since the war and the young are often unaware of its existence or meaning. Even naïve is nowadays frequently seen without one.

I had a diaeresis once; it cleared up after a few days.

I cannot think of any English words that use a trema over a u, though - though of course there probably are some.

Also, you forgot its use in the names of heavy metal bands: Motörhead, Mötley Crüe and, no doubt, others.

But those aren't diaereses. Those are metal umlauts.

They are all, are they not, trema? Whether they are metal umlauts or something else is context- and use-specific.

Perhaps but it was you who introduced a term trema. I was discussing the diaeresis, pursuant to b4rR31_r0l1's query. This latter is distinct from the umlaut.

Re: Um... is this supposed to mean something?

I was interpreting the query to refer to trema - since b4rR31_r0l1's comment was to do with display rather than usage - of which umlauts and diaeresis are each a form.

Is there a punctuation mark to indicate that two adjacent forum posts are incredibly boring?

Despite all these umlauts it sounds like Japanese "engrish" when said out loud. Well, at least for me.
