Crawl Semi-Sprint

So, in the discussion thread of making the game harder I started a project to make a shortened, harder, less annoying crawl for kicks, and now that I've seriously begun working on it and a few people are interested I figured I'd make a thread of it's own.

Some of the major features so far:

-Food eliminated and replaced with draining, which is light and now is message suppressed so doesn't interrupt resting.
-Identification eliminated
-Game is about somewhere between 30-40% length. Experience, piety, and now uniques, are ramped up to accomodate, although I think vaults are probably still broken.
*some gods are probably broken due to the piety adjustments, although I'll work on that
-Stairs are radioactive, and mutation is always possible, although to a much lower degree the less mutation you have. It also dissipates more rapidly.
-adjusting ammo random loot so you don't need to worship ok
-base speed 12
-spell level adjustments
-less consumables (over the game, currently there's a lot per floor)

I'm honestly more interested in general with the game being shorter and less annoying than harder, so I will probably make an easy difficulty at some point. I'll update every sunday, and explain what's getting added. Also open to new ideas if someone has any. I will at some point be taking the game in a quite different direction, but for now the focus is on shortening and balancing.

I had to add:
#include "math.h" in timed_effects.cc

to get a compile, then got crash post launch on:

./dat/des/portals/ossuary.des:670: Invalid depth for D in spec "D:6"

Interesting, don't think I changed anything after compiling it for windows but good catch, might just be a mac thing. Yeah I had not tested extended or portals atm, I'll look into when I have time next weekend or later tonight.

Expect a lot of bugs and no balance atm, just want to get people's thoughts as I work on this ;) Anyways, won't be on till later tonight if anyone's having installation issues :(

Edit: okay fixed the math.h issue, and made a change that will hopefully fix your other issue until I find a better solution :D

Edit: Tell me how that works, as for anyone using windows, I finally successfully have a pre-compiled that actually friggin' works in the OP now. At least I got it to work by downloading it from another computer anyways.

the windows compiled works fine for me so far. i just started a game and am totally confused about everything since i've only played webtiles until now and the interface is slightly different. i'll get used to it. next i'll see if anything breaks when i try to import my usual rc file.

i didn't notice you said you had made spell level adjustments. mephitic cloud at level 4 threw me off a bit (started a caster to see how drain when resting affects them). but i'm sure it's for the best. you don't happen to have a list of all the adjustments somewhere, do you?

more thoughts after playing some more:

the ranged buff is huge. my crossbow hunter was able to clear lair and orc without ever doing any melee combat. probably too strong. otoh the odds of a good launcher dropping is lower i suppose, and was what eventually led to my demise in d:5. i really can't recommend trying to kill frost giants with a +1 hand crossbow. switching to another weapon would have been optimal but i wanted to see what i could get away with. throwing is likely op (well, even more so than in vanilla).

the fact that there are fewer item drops in total forces you to adjust to the dungeon a bit more, which i think is a good thing. you're not guaranteed to see a good weapon of every type, or spells in the schools you want. there are still the orc shops to fall back on but you also have much less money than in vanilla. at first i thought gozag would be awesome when nobody needs to eat, but this turns out to not be the case with fewer enemies and gold piles.

i dunno how i feel about contaminated stairs, it feels a bit disconnected somehow. i think i'd prefer more draining instead if you want to punish stairdancing.

a nice qol change would be if auto-id on pickup were reflected in the log. right now it only shows ie "p - a glowing whip" when you pick up an item and you have to actually open your inventory to find out what it was.

there are some obsolete items, like scrolls of id, chunks, starting food, negatively enchanted equipment. i'm sure this is already on the to-do list, just adding it here for completeness.

overall, it's a really nice mod and none of the issues prevent it from being more enjoyable than vanilla crawl for me right now. the thing i miss the most from webtiles is the online stat tracking, so i might go back for that eventually. is there anything in particular that needs more testing and feedback?

my throwing experiment turned into a fairly easy win. had tons of ammo left over by the end. it was a little funny how i got mutated by the stairs during the orb run.

Have splatted thrice as a MiGl of Oka in Lair, so amping up the difficulty is working.

Besides the UX feedback already mentioned, not sure that draining is an effective menace to reduce the incentive to rest, etc. The experience boost means that it's cheap to acquire the levels of experience that mitigate the drain malus. Wonder if a contamination malus for being in unexplored territory might be better (mythos: mutagenic dungeon radiation offset by <waves hand>).

Hey :D Mostly I'm just glad people can play it finally haha! Figures that someone would beat it the afternoon I post a working version lol. Some responses to comments from you two:

Spell level adjustments: Sure, check out spl-data.h, open with wordpad or whatever :) However, as a general rule, the big nerfs are meph, haste, cblink, and some summons, and the only buffs are most double school conjurations. Mostly by a single level. There will be much more pronounced buffs when I change spellbook design, but this is what I think is best with vanilla spellbooks.

Contaminated stairs: This is mostly a shortcut to punish stairs that will be replaced with something better down the road. I preferred contam to draining because I wanted the effect of going down and immediately up to be quite malicious but regular use to be pretty benign. Not so easy with drain, but perfect with the new contam system.

auto-id/obsoletes- Yeah these are going to be month+ away fixes, got a bunch of work to do for next weekend :)

Draining- The constant drain is really just to prevent scumming and "sitting on stairs" the way that food did not, it isn't actually meant to be particularly dangerous if you are playing "normally". I may ramp it up a tiny bit, especially if people find it doesn't actually prevent that, but it will not be by much if I do. I don't want a situation where someone rests and suddenly their spell failure spikes, not to mention other sources of drain like ru might become unmanageable, and contamination is something I don't really want even on stairs in the long run (although pretty hilarious in the orb run which I hadn't even thought of till it was mentioned). Sometime way down the road I will make a mutant species, so you'll get all the contamination you want if that's your thing ;)

Ammo- yeah, throwing ammo abundance is an oversight that will be fixed ;) As for launcher ammo I think you're right. To get the effect of having infinite ammo without being overpowered, I will probably end up completely removing launcher brands, thus making unbranded arrows and stones not super powerful throughout the game. It is a little powerful for now, but not a priority.

Might go back to webtiles- This isn't meant to replace webtiles anyways, you can play both, I don't mind :D While the current goals are shortening and balance, the remainder will be doing things quite differently. Also, the game is kind of a hack. I don't think it will be stable enough to be accepted as an official offshoot like sprint or zot defense, so there will probably not be stat tracking for a while, if ever. If it becomes popular, I may redo some of the awful coding and change that, or develop some stat tracking system of my own :)

As for testing that I need, well shoot beating the game was a good one, I usually splatted by first rune and didn't even know if end game was stable. Guess it is :D But I know quite a lot of it is unbalanced atm anyways, so I would just have fun with it till I put some more work into it :)

Okay, so changes for this week are pushed to repo, will get made into a pre-compiled sometime later tonight with a few more changes. Most of this weeks changes are god related.

1) Hunger is still gone, but food is now generated and will always be pizza, for flavor reasons. And that flavor is pepperoni :)

2) Gods no longer give penance for desertion when your experience level is 9 or less. You're too pathetic for them to care.

3) Crash bug with ru is removed, exploit for generating piety by switching between good gods removed.

4)Temple is now exploded: The branch no longer generates, and instead 3+ altars per floor generate.

5) Various god buffs and nerfs:

-Trog: berserk hp now scales with level, you will only get an extra experience_level*2% extra hp.
-oka: heroism will now only give 3 extra levels (not pushed yet)
-Ash: You now start with 8 scrolls of remove curse on entering the religion, will be 4 soon though
-Beogh: Smite now does more damage scaled with invo but generates significant noise on the monster's position
-Demigods now have initial stats of 15/15/15. In the future, they will gain random god abilities instead (if that's not too difficult xD)
-ru now generates sacrifices at a much more significant rate, although rejecting sacrifices now really really sets you back. Choose wisely.

6)Ammunition rates revisited, to fix concerns brought up by emikaela.

7)Not a change from last version, but to clarify: you start with * piety in any religion, gain is tripled and loss is tripled for pacing reasons like experiences. There will probably be some unintended consequences there, so tell me if anything feels weird with this.

Edit: After this, races will get dramatically changed, generally buffs and nerfs, but some races that are currently kind of stupid (deep dwarves being makhleb heads, and felids being kind of lame for example) will be dramatically changed to fit their original design goals. This will probably take a while, so might not get much done by next sunday :?

Edit: Okay version two now has a pre-compile, under folder "version2" and also has the first species refactor:

Deep dwarf -> Hell dwarf (although still called deep dwarf for now because apparently I can't just change the species-data.h description string to a different name).

Only one change currently exists for hell dwarves, and that is there is NO standard healing whatsoever. This is simply replaced with a makhleb-style instrinsic healing on kill, allowing the dwarf to play any number of gods and playstyles. Currently it's probably a bit too difficult to win with it, though, but some more additions will be made in the future.

i tried going for a 15-runer and found something gamebreaking: no pan (or abyss) entrance generated anywhere. i assume the intention is that every character should be able to try extended?

personally i guess i'm more interested in making "crawl but shorter" work properly than in "crawl but shorter and with wildly sweeping balance changes", but it's your project :)

Well my main focus is on the 3 rune game simply because I never found extended super interesting, and more importantly I'm guessing it will be difficult to do properly. I will get on it eventually, though!

Small things like making it literally possible I'll get during the update after this sunday week, which was mostly some minor mechanics changes, and two more revamped races. Unfortunately, I'll be working a bit slow over the next month, might miss an update like last week, since I'm playing the awesome sudden death challenge over in dartboard forum :3

Alright, so version3 is up, will post the link in op in a moment. Main changes:

-All the missing extended branches should show up now in depths, and shortened (hells -> 2 levels, tomb ->1, abyss -> no experience gain for monsters + rune placement chance is quintupled, pan -> 50/50 chance of pan lord rather than the progressive algorithm) I haven't tested hells and tomb, and I wouldn't be surprised if tomb was hardcoded for 3 levels, so there might be an issue there, though.

-Spells and particularly spellcasting revisited: You can now memorize any spell in your starter book at XL 1, spell levels are now your spellcasting skill * 4 instead of XL + spellcasting * 2, and spellcasting's role in spell success and power is doubled. Mana regeneration is also doubled.

-Hell dwarves are now actually called hell dwarves in game, although this change may get reverted since it's probably unstable. For whatever stupid reason you can't just change a race's string descriptor, so I literally did a find_replace of the source on SP_DEEP_DWARF with SP_HELL_DWARF, and some other needed replaces. They now also can hurl blasts of hellfire at I think it was level 13, although right it's probably not a good idea to use it often. They have ridiculously high hit points but will face on ongoing crisis of trying to regenerate it through murdering the dungeon denizens.

-Felids are now "abyssal kittens" (not renamed yet, so just play felid), cursed with the equivalent of 8 ranks worth of teleportitis, but blessed with sickening amounts of mana regeneration. If you've ever wanted to play a blaster caster like a tabber this is your race.

-Humans-> mutants didn't make it to this release, because of bizarre issues with skills, but the general idea is humans will be the randart version of a race. This will come eventually.

-Most silly descriptions like "hunger cost: ###...." are actually replaced with numbers. You won't have to wonder what the hell MR: +++++ means, it'll just tell you you have 198 MR or whatever. Not quite complete, though.

Next release will focus on implementing stairs overhaul, difficulty settings, inventory management (if it is possible) and an actual in depth pass on gods and spells. I'll probably get around to it in a few weeks, though, busy with the sudden death tournament :)

Tried this out.

Default skill selection was weird and I ended up training spellcasting on my Be, whoops. Also, defaulting to EXPLORE mode took the edge off for me (yes, I can just press Y to die, but it don't feel the same). With everything identified and no eating, a lot of items become useless, eventually these should be removed (I'm sure this is planned). Curses can probably go away altogether (I liked old curses/curse scrolls, myself, but they make less and less sense as the ID game is removed).

Like Sprint, it seems like a lot turns on whether you can survive that first really tough monster. I was playing mostly Bes so that wasn't too much of a problem, but I imagine some combos are going to need a big spoonful of luck to get off the ground.

I'm not sure how bad the draining clock is, but I didn't like it and didn't like resting (I'm sure that's the idea). Vine Stalker is a great race here.

Weird item distributions, seemed like more randarts than usual. Maybe just random chance. Altars were uneven too, in one game I had like 8 altars to TSO and maybe four others total. Might tweak that to enforce it a little more even. Or not.

If you set up an online server it would really lower the bar for people to try this out. I suspect you could get some help (##crawl-dev, at a guess) if you start pursuing it.

Anyway, I like the idea of a faster playing "regular" Crawl. I'm not a fast player, and a successful game chews up a lot of time and is rather a slog in the last half (and I don't mean extended, I almost never do that). Would love to see a successful fork that plays faster and keeps the random caprice of the full game. Good luck.

Hey :D Thanks a bunch for the feedback. Yeah, I mostly didn't want to make a server because of the potential overhead and I'm mostly busy with work. Looks like I might have to, though. A lot of the appeal of crawl I think is laughing at people splatting, competing, and whatnot, and none of that is possible in offline. Oh well, I will see what I have to do and determine whether it's worth it. If it happens, won't be for a while.

Reponses:

-defaults skill/explore : Default skill selection seems to be in trunk right? I agree, though, it's dumb, and will be ripped out. Explore was just in mostly for personal testing, I felt like it might have been useful as well for others if I had any bugs that caused unfair deaths. But if it seems off, I can turn it off when uploading a new version.

-Beginning hard: While this is true, you do get an initial teleport scroll and while there's less of them all your initial escape options will be identified, so you basically start with two extra. It is harder on purpose, though, but if the beginning is still hard I can always do some tweaks. Also spells were considerably reworked to give casters a better survival rate, particularly conjurations, but everything in my last post as well.

-The drain clock is actually incredibly light, it should not affect resting, just stair scumming and whatnot. Since everyone has some drain now, I think I should have an initial "grey" level drain where if your skill drain is <10% of your skills you suffer no drain effects, like grey level contam.

-Item distributions: intentional :D Think I accidentally made jewelry too high.

-Altars: Also intentional, instead of a reliable temple and overflow you just get three completely random altars per level (which will over time give probably 90% of altars). This is currently not that great for the game since the gods only had one quick balance pass that took care of egreqious imbalances, once I do a more in depth balance pass this should be good for the game.

Edit: oh I see what you mean about default skills. There was a change recently which gave everyone 1 skill in everything so they wouldn't have to look up aptitudes... kiiinda forgot this turned all skills on. Either way, will turn off skills being turned on for training at start.

Also, looks like supporting a server isn't too difficult, so it'll happen eventually, just pretty busy this month.

Did you ask any of the current serve admins if they had room for your semi-sprint as an experimental branch? That might be easier than setting up your own server.

Well, that is true I guess I could do that, but as a developer this would be a good learning experience anyways :D Plus most of the experimental branches I've seen are for small changes, I'm not sure how well they'd like the idea of potentially unstable sweeping changes.

i tried going for 15 again and am stuck on tomb:1. there's no rune and no downstairs, even after shattering the walls.

also, the hell branches were still 7 floors deep. upon entering dis:7 i got the following message, possibly related: "Lua error: C:/Users/Mikaela/Desktop/crawl-ref/crawl-ref/source/dat/des/branches/dis.des:637: No vault found for tag 'dis_castle' x100". didn't pay attention to if i got a similar one or not in the other branches.

if extended is not a priority, which i think makes sense, i suggest you just revert the changes you did to branch length and see if that works.

and some general thoughts:

i was surprised to see more caster buffs. i think mage backgrounds are already way stronger than others since equipment is scarce and your starting book lasts much longer than your starting weapon. every buff after that (better spellcasting, lower level multi-school spells, mp regen) is just icing on the cake, mages would still be strong without them. berserkers are still fine thanks to guaranteed weapon gifts, and unarmed and throwing are good, but other weapon skills are too unreliable in the beginning.

i'm still not a fan of contaminating stairs. it feels like you're forced into zin/jiyva/undeath for the long game, and it encourages stopping to rest on every floor while traveling between levels. drain is not enough to counteract this, it just makes it more annoying.

abyssal kittens is a neat concept, but the risk of unavoidable death is quite high. more extra lives, perhaps? if you get an early amulet of guardian spirit it makes a huge difference. actually, gs is probably too strong overall with the mp regen changes.
