New unrandart proposal!

The XenoBlade & NeoBlade:
or, it is time to rip off Star Wars.
or, YASR: Yet Another Stupid Reference.

Long Blade weapons made of a transparent material which unsurprisingly enough is incredibly hard. Inside this material lies Xenon/Neon which is manipulated in such a way that it gives the blade a specific hue (white-blue/red respectively). Whoever made these sure likes eye-candy!

The weapon can be evoked at any time to be changed from a one handed weapon to a double handed weapon (behaves similar to a quarterstaff but is still considered a long blade) and back.

One Handed: [+1, +12] {Holy(Xenon)/Pain(Neon), +5 SH}
Double Handed: [-2, +18] {Holy(Xenon)/Pain(Neon), +25 SH}

Crawl needs assist trophies! Find one of these and evoke it, and you'll get a random summon from some other roguelike! Who knows what you'll find? You could get a grid bug, or the Wizard of Yendor, or Grip, Farmer Maggot's dog, or Morgoth...

Staff-class weapons should be able to have 2 different brands, one for each end of the staff.

Each time you hit a monster, the brand used would be chosen randomly, with higher weapon skill giving a greater chance to use the brand that does the most damage to that opponent.

Maybe it could also apply to double swords.

Unrandart idea:

The quarterstaff "Antipode" {fire/ice, rF+, rC+ ... you get the idea} - It would either hit with whichever end of the weapon is more effective for the opponent you are attacking, or alternate between the two elements.

And it could activate for "antipode bomb" which somehow manages to freeze and burn the enemy simultaneously! (Yay for Chrono Trigger...)

Blurry eyesight should take two forms. The first form is near-sightedness, you can read scrolls and books perfectly well, but your range of vision is reduced by a tile or two. The second form is far-sightedness, you can't read books and scrolls very well but you get a bonus to finding traps that are a couple of tiles away. Your eyesight is increased by a couple of tiles as well.

Thinking about wands of digging creating shafts. Maybe zapping a wand of digging at your feet creates a shaft through which you immediately fall. You can't place a shaft anywhere but under your feet. The shaft also returns to solid ground once you have fallen through it.

Also about shafts, it doesn't make sense that when they crumble and collapse, they turn into solid ground.

I'd love to see Crawl move beyond the internet subculture of ssh and irc and onto a more 'normal' platform. I can't help but imagine how awesome DCSS would be on Steam, with full steamworks integration: global leaderboards and achievements, tournaments with thousands of players, watch anyone play with a single click on your friends list. An option to play tiles or ascii right from the menu. Crawl hats for TF2. TF2 hats for Crawl. Then Aphex Twin would contribute a catchy-yet-subtle-yet-epic ambient soundtrack, and Hank Azaria would provide voice acting for every unique.

All for free, of course. It would be very awesome.

A while back, someone made a joke post on Usenet for a DF/TF2 crossover, called Dwarf Fortress 2. Unfortunately, because the name sounded like exactly what it says on the tin (a sequel to DF), the joke was lost on a lot of people.

The obvious solution to all those problems is to put in the license agreement that no on ever reads something that says. "If you have a hard time with this game and rage about it on the internet, you lose all your rights to playing this game."

Honestly, I think many 'average' pc gamers would play Crawl - and love it - if it was playable through a 'normal' medium like Steam. I believe roguelikes have historically languished in obscurity only because they are awkward, obtuse, and archaic. Much of their perceived difficulty comes from this; NetHack really isn't hard once you've memorized its thousand unintuitive quirks. Crawl has improved, and continues to improve, so much on this.

I can think of many recent and successful commercial games heavily inspired by roguelikes: desktop dungeons, dungeons of dredmor, the binding of isaac, 100 rogues, dwarf fortress, diablo, torchlight. Terraria and Minecraft are absolutely massive, and both take several nods from the genre, including a permadeath mode. 'Difficult' games are still around, too: one example would be PS3's Demons Souls/Dark Souls, where its deadly monsters and harsh punishments for getting killed are a major selling point. These games are played by 'normal' people. Why wouldn't they like Crawl?

Of course, with Crawl being free and open source, it may not matter to the devteam whether crawl has 500 active players or 50,000. Licensing problems (free game on commercial platform) could arise, and major network coding could be required. It certainly wouldn't help to have the forums flooded with terrible game suggestions, and I can only imagine the storm of whining that could come with major game changes a la removing MD. It's all just a pipe dream.

It might be good for this game to be obscure.
Democracy, after all, was placed among the bad ruling strategies by either Aristotle or Socrates, cannot remember whom exactly.
Not all the things must be directed and planned by the majority.

Comparing to Dungeons of Dredmor, which is, certainly, more "user-appealing", our game is deep, serious and, well, existing on its own, not trying to look easy to those who play it. Which is nice.
