We do not have a species which has variable resistance to elements. Activated ability to become more resistant to one element but vulnerable to opposite element: fire-ice, ice-fire, air/elec-earth, earth-air/elec, acid-cold, mutation-hellfire/fire. That could make battles more interesting IMHO. It could be similar to damage shaving of DD or even stonger since it applies to a single element only and requires spending a turn.

by cerebovssquire
In a lot of fights you are only exposed to one source of elemental damage. In practice, this might turn out a lot like simply giving a species a pip of every resistance, period, except that it would be annoying to activate an ability each time you face a monster that uses elemental damage.

Later on, there are more fights where you will have e.g. both fire and cold damage (especially against draconian packs, yaktaur packs with different ammo brands, etc.), but later on you also have access to enough resistance sources, so the impact of the ability on early game/midgame gameplay seems more important.

Yes, that would be a powerful species, not surprisingly I compared it to DD. Probably the elemental damage reduction could depend on XL to be not so powerful early. I'd like to add more tactics to melee, it is too straightforward IMHO.
I think Zin is not treated as powerful early god but he does similar thing - allows to spend a turn to get some useful effect.
Also Orc Wizards can have either cold or fire so it would be a guess (until first cast)

I wasn't talking about power level, I meant that having an active ability when a passive ability would have a similar effect in just adds keystrokes despite providing little benefit. If you can choose which resistance you have at any given moment, that will usually just be like having a pip of every resistance.

So it's like those games where your only sources of rF/rC are rings of fire/ice? Very fun.

It requires a turn to activate and I think this is what implies decision making. Why don't we have a passive ability for Zin when all monsters in LoS can be affected by a single recitation? Because 1 turn is important. Consider it another option like BiA, Trog's Hand or Berserk.

You seriously don't think that activated rF+/rC- and rC+/rF- abilities would be either useless or annoying to use? Not to mention, not enough to carry a race on its own?

Recite takes a bunch of turns, not 1, BiA and Hand have piety costs, and berserk leaves you seriously crippled after as little as 1 or 2 actions. Your ability is more like, say, the old version of repel missiles.

You are not obligated to activate it, it's not a passive ability. But yes, it can be fun if you activated it for fighting Fire Dragon and then an Ice Dragon came in range, especially if we balance the potentially too powerful ability by making penalty ignore current resists, for example, a character with rF+ and rC++ activates fire-protection, kills an OoF but then an Ice Dragon comes into LoS and you still have rC-.

Sar wrote:You seriously don't think that activated rF+/rC- and rC+/rF- abilities would be either useless or annoying to use? Not to mention, not enough to carry a race on its own?

Not, this alone is unlikely to worth a new species. Jumping alone is not worth it too, but it is nice for Fe. The elemental resistance could be a property of Pegasus.
Btw, in another game Pegasus has high magic resistance but almost no protection from physical range damage (something like decreased EV when being shot with arrows/bolts).

How about a new version of "elemental resistance" - a passive ability which can be toggled in the game (toggling it requires 1-2 turns). That would require less keystrokes and still have some decisions.

New race idea: Yeeks!

Said to be the missing link between goblins and slimes, these small disgusting creatures are weak and terrible at most things. Their only saving grace is their high stealth and fast growth, which means they gain levels more quickly than even humans. They also emit a film of slime that covers their equipment, neutralizing acids and quickly healing wounds.

Yeeks have unstable genetics, making them prone to mutation. This can be good or bad, but mostly funny.

Traits:
Small
Slow movement 1
Deformed body 1
Resist acid and corrosion
Regeneration 1
Fast levelling (20% faster than humans)
Poor aptitudes in all skills except stealth, stabbing, poison and transmutations
innate (permanent) evolution 2
Low str and int, medium dex. Gains dex every 4 levels.
At high levels, yeeks can swallow a portion of their brain stem, sacrificing permanent stats, permanent hp and permanent mp to restore current hp and mp in a pinch.
Cosmetic: yeeks leave a slime trail wherever they go.

Yeeks are to species what chaos knights are to classes: probably not viable, but also lots of fun.

HP and MP would be -1 each. Maybe the slime trail would allow monsters to track you more easily, just to make your early game more miserable.

That...actually isn't horrible (Yeeks). Slow movement 1 AND poor apts. together might be bad though. Though having permanent evolution would put all other (even racial) mutations in flux so the slow movement could leave easily. I'm already curious about how having Mutation 3 as a permanent racial mutation would play...as much or more good stuff than demonspawn...but a lot of bad stuff too and none of the Demonspawn unique stuff. I suppose in this case the Jiyva unique mutations would need to be included too...

Incidentally, evolution only goes up to rank 2...I tried giving a race permanent evolution 2, but the mutations came too slowly to amuse me. There would have to be an evolution rank 3 to really make this idea the "Xom" of species.

Yea I did the same. Didn't get any mutations at all until XL 12...it's quite frequent at XLs high enough at levels you'd get it from enemies (Zot, etc.); but it doesn't scale with level.

Maybe instead of evolution, Yeeks gain a random mutation (with a 50% chance of being good) of random level every time the gain an XL. Berserkitis, teleitis and shoutitis should probably not be selectable for theses mutations.

Sorry for the double post, I felt like bumping the thread.

New God: Gozer the Gozerian

Appreciates: Destruction, creating ghosts, opening gates

Deprecates: Crossing the streams, New Yorkers

* Allows you to take on the role of the gatekeeper or the key master, with different abilities for each role.
*** Allows you to create ghosts from defeated enemies that fight for you.
****** One time use, allows you to summon the destructor with a form of your choice.

More serious proposal, not very fleshed out:

Gereval of the Mount (defensive god prototype)

Appreciates: Creating altars for him, permanence, sacrificing heavily enchanted objects, killing destructive enemies and unnatural enemies

Deprecates: Altering fine crafts (like your body or the dungeon), eating impure food

Gereval is a deity associated with dwarves and stonework. He loves fine crafts and beautiful altars, and dislikes their destruction. Every time you go to a new level, a marker is placed. You must travel to the marker and erect an altar by using his first ability to gain piety. He dislikes it when you leave a level without first creating the altar. Piety does not decay over time. You can also sacrifice heavily enchanted weapons and armor (+3 or higher for armor, +6 total or higher for weapons) to gain piety. Gereval believes that his followers' bodies are a fine craft, and deprecates soiling them with transmutations, mutations or tainted meat.

Abilities, no particular piety level:

Create altar: Creates an altar to Gereval at a specific spot.
Stone eater: Eat a number of stones in your inventory to restore health.
Create statue: Targets a pile of stones in line of sight and turns it into a living statue, which fights for you. Its strength is based on your invocations skill and the total weight of the stones. Can target empty space to create a very weak statue. Costs piety, mp and food.
Shield of stone: Passive ability. Increases your shield score.
Mountain cloak: Activated ability. Slows your movement, but grants AC, MR, bonus hit points and preservation for a short time. Costs piety and mp.
Crystal body: At six-star piety, Gereval grants deep dwarf style damage reduction. This stacks with deep dwarves natural damage reduction.
