I'd be pleased to see a branch that's just butterflies and non-biting goldfish. Maybe a bit likes Shoals, with gently lapping waves (and no sirens), and a wooded glade inland from the beach. And regenerating permafood, and no OOD timer, so you could say for as long as you liked: for eternity, perhaps.

And no whippersnappers.

I just jumped into this to make something for fun, but ended up with this wall of text.

New Race - Amorphous
"For all your mutation abusing needs" or
"Never before has a rapidly evolving organism shown such inflexibility in terms of background choices" or
"It makes Chernobyl look like kindergarten"

Description:

A race of chaotic, low-intelligence amoeba-like creatures, eternal followers of the Slime God, Jiyva. Their bodies are constantly changing, as they're undergoing rapid evolution, trying to adopt to survive through life-threatening situations, yet they also have to fight against Jiyva's random nature.

Benefits and restrictions:

Your deity is always Jiyva and cannot change, since other gods don't take low-intelligence life-forms as followers. Of course this ensures you can get the slimey rune of Zot without fighting in the Slime Pits. If you kill the Royal jelly, you're an idiot. :D
Your attacks cause bonus acidic damage to enemies, corroding their armor and when somebody hits your organism's mass their weapon has a chance to be corroded (or they take a little damage (possibly scaling by XL) if unarmed).
You cannot wear ANY equipment at all.
Being an ever evolving, volatile organism, much like Jiyva's ability to grant and take away random mutations at certain intervals, you gain mutations to adopt to any life-threatening situations you may encounter (meaning that there's a threshold to overcome in order to get a new mutation. For example, if you only have your starting mutations and take a certain amount of damage by one element type -say, fire- you gain one level of resistance to that type. In order to get to the next tier - ** - you would have to get hit by much more fire damage to obtain it and even more to ***) Finally, that's where the ability of Jiyva to remove bad mutations comes into play.
You cannot manipulate items (rods, wands, decks, other evocables).
You cannot read scrolls and books, since you lack the ability to read.
You can quaff potions by devouring the entire bottle (and maybe have a small turn delay (2-5) since the glass must be dissolved to get to the liquid? :) Revolutionary mechanic in potion usage! :o ).
You cannot acquire mutations that require body parts other than the body and you cannot have more than 1 type of scales mutation active at a time (scales, Jiyva eyes, repulsion field, etc. are fine but I'm having some thoughts about Thin Skeletal Structure, though)). Also, being constantly altering, you cannot acquire the mutation resistance mutation (although there is the regular cap to how many mutations you can have at any give time), or the +int mutation. Also, your Intellect cannot be lowered, since you don't have a brain to affect, making you immune to INT stat death altogether.
Due to all these restrictions, the only background available is the Fighter one (with Jiyva as your god of course), with starting skills being 3 fighting 2 unarmed 3 dodging 4 stealth. Your Starting stats are 13 Str 0 Int 13 Dex
No spellcasting. You can only get Blink, Tele, cTele, Berserkitis, Teleportitis, etc from mutations.

Innate Mutations:

| Fast Metabolism 3 | The reason I "grouped" these two is that if one goes down or up, so does the other. This goes to show how your metabolism has a huge effect on your ability to regenerate your cells.
| Regeneration 3 |

Slow 3 (Low base speed)
Gourmand (You can eat any kind of chunk without prompting, save for poison/rot/mut inducing ones)
Rubbery Body 3 (fixed) +AC
Pseudopods 3 (fixed) unfitting armor (who cares?)
Covered In Eyeballs 1 (can go up/down but not less than lvl 1) +Acc
Acidic Saliva (fixed) extra damage + corrode enemy armor

Skills & Aptitudes:

Since you are a completely new organism, you don't have any natural inclinations. Thus, most aptitudes are +0.

Exception:

+5 to stealth (makes sense due to way of movement being silent, helps with avoiding trouble due to very low speed)

All skills except for FGT, UC, DG, STH and INV are disabled.

The only question that remains is: Why the hell would a mindless ooze-thing care enough to gather the runes!?

In answer to your final question - You are an extension of Jivya and he really wants to eat the orb. Might as well allow regen through eating items and stuff like a Jelly too.

I was thinking about it but then it would be even worse than Nemelexites and their floor trash. After all I don't really know If the slimes can gain nutrition from items such as weapons and armour, seeing as they're not organic substances. I lack the knowledge to make this decision, actually. Is it appropriate in DC:SS that slimes should get nutrition from metal items for example? Also, since you're bound with Jiyva, you'll get nutrition, HP, MP from fellow slimes eating stuff off the ground at higher piety, so there really is no need for you to be able to do that.

On another note, how can a slime thing carry 52 items with it without dissolving them? Not that a cat really makes sense carrying a bunch of executioner's axes, but oh well. :P

I've only ever seen it once, but there was a centaur garden portal vault in 0.9 - by the time I found it, centaurs were entirely harmless, and it was otherwise full of nice lawn, hedges and butterflies.

There was a reasonable treasure vault at the end of the garden, but again, the guardians (some kind of gargoyle or golem IIRC) weren't threatening by the time the vault turned up.

I swear I am not making this up.
