A scenery addition - advertising on the walls. For obvious reasons, this will be limited to fictional products/people.

You go down the stairs.
A banner and a flyer come into view.
You read the banner.
"Interested in joining the Sigmund Fan Club? Get your own robe and scythe! Dues are 10 gold per month."
You read the flyer.
"Carry the black torch with Yredelemnul! Accepting new worshippers all the time. Disclaimer: Service is binding for all eternity. Holy beings need not apply."

For extra fun, make it so that people get unhappy when their advertisments are destroyed.

New unique: FePr named "Starkit". Has rN+++ and returns to life == up to twice == on a random nearby level. In addition, the spelling of her name becomes increasingly corrupted as she takes damage.

Okay a semi-serious brainstorm here, should be renamed if it were taken seriously though ;)...

Item: Get-out-of-abyss-free card

You get out of the abyss. Not much else to say ;)

Methods of obtaining: Xom acquirement, Scroll of acquirement (misc.), General Store/Artifact Shop (2-3k), extremely rarely on the floor (cure mutation rare).

Obviously Get-into-abyss-free cannot be used (not to mention the horrors accidently using an unIDed one)

The frequency of exit-appearance in the Abyss has been upped considerably, which should go some way to relieving boredom. It used to be impossible for a midlevel character to escape the Abyss.

For the Soviet Abyss, I'm thinking of the "Door to Hell" in Turkmenistan...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derweze

Also, brainstormingwise, I'm watching "The Thing" (the 1982 Carpenter one, not the prequel that just came out). A mimic, but instead of mimicking features, it mimics your allies. It follows you, staying just out of LoS, and if one of your allies drops out of your LoS, it will attempt to kill it and then it will mimic it. When you come across the mimic again, it will appear to be that ally, and you will be none the wiser. It will have the little heart icon, it will even attack enemies... until it gets adjacent to you, at which point it will reveal its true self and try to kick your ass.

TRUST NO ONE

That would be a really annoying way to die, though. If implemented, there would need to be telltale signs to exploit (maybe it doesn't follow orders very well, or can't use weapons), or it could only attack you a turn after revealing its true form.

Well, if you follow The Thing word for word, it'd reveal itself when injured because the blood would react by itself. Additionally it is intelligent, so it'd only attack if you were alone or attacked.

Technically, you'd have to spill the blood, and then damage the blood somehow...

Yeah, it is a pretty good movie. I don't watch many horror films, but it's nice to see one where it's a group of smart people who get shit done instead of the usual scared teenagers who flop around and die until some spooky old guy tells them the backstory. I was thinking that that kind of who-can-you-trust paranoia might make an interesting addition to Crawl, but staying up super late might not be the best way to think up a good implementation of that. At the very least, the player would have to suspect that an Ally Mimic was around, while at the same time not having to rely on spoilers to know the Telltale Signs, and also making sure that nobody gets a cheap death because the Ally Mimic snuck up and clobbered them.

Based on your Int and Invocations, whenever you commit a sin, there's a chance you can weasel out of it instead of taking a piety hit or penance.

Re: Generic Brainstorming!

A not-so-damaging, but very precise long sword of frost, forged for a warrior who got tired from hearing wails and weeps of his foes but still wanted to fight for his land. The enemies it hits are struck not just by the merciless steel, but also by eerie silence that prevents them from making a single shout.

A long sword "Silencer" {frost, Stealth+}. Not so damaging, but quite accurate (+n, +0).
Whenever it strikes an enemy, there is a fairly high chance (three times out of five) that it will create a single square of Silence (yes, the mini-version of Silence spell) for one to two turns, basically making it a Wizardbane or a Lichbane. However, that square is not fixed to the target, so a Wizard might as well move out of it.
Occasionally (one time out of twenty, in example) it breaks out a larger circle of SIlence (1/2 of LoS or radius 3-4 or bigger) that lasts longer and is affixed to the target it just hit. Since this effect is quite eerie, such affixed Silence has a (one out of three) chance of scaring away the affected creature, forcing it to run away -- possibly towards the body-guarded smiters and spell-casters.

What would you think about such an artefact?

I'd say add it here: https://crawl.develz.org/wiki/doku.php?id=dcss:brainstorm:item:unrandarts#brainstorming_new_unrands

Let's see. A lot of swords, including the Singing Sword, one scythe, a plenty of spears, a trident, a mace, a hand axe, and a knife.
I, of course, would choose the sword, but there really are a plenty of them there.
Spear is not the choice.
Staves are not the choice as well: they are usually magical.

For some reason, I still think it must be a long sword.

Thanks for telling me about that page, Jeff -- will send it there!

A battleaxe or executioner's axe would make sense as well; Executioner's would be nice and thematic but might be a tad overpowered.

Battle axe sounds like a good choice to me, too.

How about implementing stealth and stabbing for monsters making them invisible until player notices them...

You start memorizing the spell.
A rogue appears and stabs you.
Ouch that really hurt.
You die...
wtf???
