some facts: the thank system rewards useful + / entertaining posts. the thanks system allows new forum members to effectively sort the noise from the info, and determine not only who are probably good sources to listen to but also which bad ones to avoid. the majority of the high thank percentage holding posters are either * moderators, councilors, or developers. high volume, low thank posters may lend reason to seek other sources of information; the thank system does not lead to poster suppression, such systems never play out fairly on the internet. but looking at thank data like this can be a bit misleading, look what happens when a few people from that member category trio with less than 100 thanks are added up:

  Code:
lucy_ferre*         301        50      16.6%
jpeg*               179        50      27.9%
ontoclasm*          98         29      29.6%
Napkin              80         24      30%
neil*               70         26      37.1%
sgrunt*             78         36      46.1%
edlothiol*          123        66      53.6%
brendan*            80         62      77.5%

When you look at numbers even smaller, the ratios go wild:

  Code:
78291               4          1       25%
elliptic*           2          1       50%
Ashenai             6          7       116%
stathol             2          5       250%
Mu                  3          9       300%
NOPE                3          14      466%
squarelos           3          16      533%
Twelvedicks         1          6       600%

and most of those are joke posts, gimmicks, or one time posters. some of those thank ratios are unsustainable, otherwise we'd see them in the higher post count members. ultimately, the thank system should motivate everyone to make quality posts. Every generic, thankless post a member makes will only bring their ratio down, and probably not add much to the discussion. thanked posts often move topics along by answering focal questions or being entertaining, both of which are rewarding for the readers and the community. an ideal discussion forum is high-volume, high-thanked/uprated/liked/etc.

anyone can look at the thank data: thankslist.php?&sk=e&sd=d

Re: oh lol, yeah ur right, thanks man

Is it possible to separate out thanks and posting/thanks-received ratios relative to the forum in which people have posted? I can imagine CYC thanks indicate something different from DCA ones, for example.

There are probably also interesting patterns in post/thanks-given ratios. Some people thank a lot, others thank rarely.

As another metric we could also consider posts which get a follow-up. Sometimes rather than thanking a post I will post a response to it so the original poster, although they don't get a thanks, adds to the forum and moves things on. I think adding to a thread in a way that constructively develops the discussion, even if unthanked, can constitute a valuable contribution.

I can't tell if it's in my best interests to thank this post.

Nevermind, I'm gonna go for it!

And twelwe, I have no connection to NOPE and while it's a gimmick account, it's not like it goes around NOPEing random posts. It's sitting at the intersection of valuable criticism and gimmick.

Re: oh lol, yeah ur right, thanks man

The statistics are vaguely interesting, but I'm not sure it means anything particularly (For example I am proportionally am thanked a lot, but my thanks are in many cases, because I code delve and post formulas for people who ask, and do a lot of math and turning code into english for people, that doesn't mean my play advice is overwhelmingly good, or that I always further the conversations, or am particularly entertaining (Although I do try on those counts))

You can see a list of all of the "thanked" posts for a given user, and probably could extract a "per forum" thank list from that, but in terms of meaningful data, I suspect it'd still all be interpretation.

Also some people thank just about anything for any reason, there are habitual thankers out there that I am not sure contribute meaningfully to any kind of statistics.

There's not really a derivable "replied to" statistic one could generate (if that were a useful metric) because what one posts may be in response to something directly quoted, or not, or an amalgamation of several posts, it may be the immediately previous thing, or something ages ago, or it might be unrelated to anything else on the thread at all.

At the same time, it's highly unlikely that people are thanking unhelpful posts. Well, except for the case that people intended to quote to rebut but instead accidentally thanked.

Should I ask for a special badge? :)

This ranking is flawed. Many of my posts were in my own threads where I asked for advice. I noticed that I give wrong advices too often so I almost stopped giving them (a break in crawling made me forget many technical details). I would not be surprised if was in the top for "thanks given" also, thank has several meanings:
1) Thank you for your good advice
2) Thank you for your time/attention, I have read your post but have nothing to comment
3) I agree with you

But let's be honest, this topic is just yet another attempt at Thanks-mongering. And soon 'ThanksWhoring' will consume the tavern like 'KarmaWhoring' has many other places.

Consider thanking post you are replying to, I often do it (even when I am arguing)
Basically I don't care about my thanks count, I am used to be alone, out of any hierarchical structures :)

Re: oh lol, yeah ur right, thanks man

I could have sworn I wrote a followup to this, and was surpised to see that I only posted once in this thread. Well here are some condensed thoughts:

This thread was an attempt at thanks mongering which bloax pointed out right away. The idea was to make a completely useless post sound as interesting as possible. No one benefits from knowledge of thank data, not even the pope.

Some interesting things happened though. I took sandman25 off ignore briefly to see his posting curve after this thread and my oh my. Spectacular is the only word to describe it. After another 1.6k posts he was able to increase his post:thank ratio by 26% from 4.4% to 6% before leaving the forum in dramatic fashion. my posting was bumped slightly from 44.2% to 44.7% after a call for people to make more interesting and useful posts. minmay, posting now under duvessa, has a 56% rate which is almost double his previous account's rate of 28.8%. If we factor in no account change and combine the numbers the thank ratio only increases to 29.3%, like me an increase of only 0.5%.

Welp there you go. Totally useless knowledge.

Re: oh lol, yeah ur right, thanks man

Interesting, since this was posted originally I've gone from 947->1562 posts, from 157->336 thanks, and from 16.5% ratio to 21.5% ratio.

That's a increase of:
64.9% more posts
114% more thanks
resulting in a 30% higher ratio.

If thanks were a measure of quality of posts, one would interpret that data to say that my posting quality had increased. Of course as we all know thanks are in fact not a useful measure of post quality :)

That is mildly interesting and not useful information indeed.

(Also mildly interesting is that when I went to my user name it told me that I posted 3.53 posts/day and slightly over 1% of all posts. That's I'm sure because I read all posts that get posted and reply to ones that I feel like, I probably also start to reply to at least 1 post per day, then decide to delete it before posting it when I realize it really doesn't contribute anything that hasn't already been said in some form)
