Hill Orcs and Axes

Not sure where to post this, so I guess that means it should be in CYC 8-)

How did Crawl's Orcs come to have an affinity with Axes? This doesn't seem to be a thing that came from D&D or Tolkien or another mythology. Dwarves associated with Axes (and Hammers), yes. Minotaurs associated with Axes, yes (the doubleheaded axe was a symbol of Minoan Crete). But Orcs? Where did that come from?

In LoTR(movie) they used swords mostly, IIRC.
