Call for tournaments
This is a modified re-post of my message on the former forum:
The annual Crawl tournament is a lot of fun, and will continue to exist. However, there are cool ideas for additional, less formal tournaments out there. Some examples:
All kinds of things could be considered. My point is that the devteam will not be able to set up these. But you can use the existing infrastructure (the servers, the scoring scripts found at https://github.com/greensnark/dcss_scoring) and you can be sure of support with those. The rules of the 2010 tournament can be found here (but it will be better to start less ambitious): http://crawl.akrasiac.org/tourney10/index.html
As to how to start it, I'd suggest bouncing ideas for tournaments here (hint: start small) then use IRC (##crawl) if you know what tournament you're planning. If you need help with scoring scripts or otherwise, don't hesitate to ask at ##crawl-dev.
It would be awesome to see a community based tournament culture! --dpeg

- open-ended tournament to achieve first victory (of a strange combo, say)
- weekend tournament dedicated to some conduct, or a god
- one week tournament like the big one, to ease the waiting
- each new Sprint map could be celebrated with a tournament to kick it off
- likewise for the reappearance of Zot Defense
