The YaSD starts with a +0 shovel (M&F, 2h, 7 dam, 170% delay), a hat, a bread ration, and the Book of Digging (contains Dig).

Logically, shovels should fall into the axe category. Otherwise, looks good.

Why a shovel?.. Wouldn't a pick make more sense? And you could attack walls with it to break them.

It depends on what kind of soil the dungeon has. Unless the soil is mostly clay or the like a shovel is probably easier to work with.

loam is such a great word
do u remember in chronicles of narnia when the tree people would eat dirt for foods and totally connoisseur out on the different types of dirts including a loam that looked just like chocolate
