If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

Proposal: Don't let skeletons disappear.

Is there a reason that skeletons evaporate so quickly? In real life they last in good shape for at least one lifetime.

Whenever a character of mine defeats a unique, I pick up their skeleton to bring with me as a trophy.
Then it disappears as if it's rotten meat.

Maybe necromancers and such would enjoy more permanent bones, but at least the unique's skeletons should stay in tact forever.

(or if that's too much as well, have the ability for them to drop a useless trophy item at death for you to carry around.)

It takes up inventory space and is worthless (exept for score maybe...)
I love it.

On 2nd thought:

Re: Proposal: Don't let skeletons disappear.

The word optimal was never mentioned... in fact, OP said "useless".

I always butcher uniques and keep the "trophies" like hides and special weapons. They add nothing but flavor, but I like having the trophies. If anything its suboptimal, unnecessary, but adds enjoyment for some of us.

The OP seemed more interested in some kind of trophy in general... skeletons were just a suggestion.

You get trophies in your morgue file under "Vanquished Creatures." They're especially nice as they don't take up inventory slots or weigh anything.

But I can't put them in my trophy room...

Re: Proposal: Don't let skeletons disappear.

Carrying around trophies of your defeated enemies seems a little grisly to me.

Still, if that's a play style that appeals to people, maybe there should be a game feature that explores it. How about a god that rewards you for each unique or rare monster you kill. Call it the Curator or something. And the god ability you get is a divine trophy room that automagically stores all your little souvenirs ;)

Unlike confusing creatures into lava, gibbing them with disintegrate or cannibalism.

I would love a trophy screen (like the runes screen) to see what unique's you've killed. I know it doesn't add much to gameplay, but sometimes it's nice to sort of sit back and say 'I managed to kill 15 horrible, horrible creations of evil' and have them all displayed (they could have little trophies like a sparking wand for Nikolai or a broken blowpipe for Sonja. I guess it might also help if you're trying to remember if you killed Mara in this game or not.

I don't like the idea much because it might make an impression on new players that engaging uniques (as opposed to leaving them alone) is always beneficial/desirable.

Touche :D

Hey, I said "to me"

Butchering enemies for meat is definitely on the stomach turning side. Blood spatter on walls is also a nice little gory touch. I don't mind dropping enemies into lava or deep water as much.

As for a trophy screen, as someone pointed out earlier, you can already find all that in the morgue file.

You can, I just think it'd be nice to have an in game list. Obviously it isn't integral to gameplay, and is probably too much work for anyone to bother with, I just think it'd be a nice touch to be able to say press a button and have a list of your conquests for when the middle game grind gets you down.

Re: Proposal: Don't let skeletons disappear.

'Skull of Sigmund' etc. would drop when he dies, and be an optional pick-up for those who want it. Most would probably drop some, and only carry the most prestigious one. Maybe it decays when not in your inventory, to prevent 'unncessary stashing'.

but why does being able to pick up an item that does nothing except add 10 aum to your backpack make the game any better?

I'm going to move this to CYC. I think these are fun(ny) suggestions but there is no way that anything like this will be added to the game.

Now that it's no longer in GDD, I can comment on it.

When I first read the original post, I could not help but think of the Hirogen from Star Trek - Voyageur.

Quote from the linked site:

After the Hirogen caught their prey, they removed the skeletal system, muscles, internal organs, ligaments and tendons by a surgical procedure known as an osteotomy. These items were kept as relics of the hunt. Unusual relics bring envy from other Hirogen males, and Hirogen females desired a male who had such unusual relics. These items couldn't be taken before the moment of the kill. Status was determined by possession of prizes from hunts, often body parts or technology obtained from their prey. These prizes, called "trophies" or "relics", were displayed in nets hanging from the ceilings or walls of their vessels. In the case of skulls, they were often mounted as a wall display.

Re: Proposal: Don't let skeletons disappear.

If this was back in the design forum, I'd suggest allowing unanimated skeletons to persist perpetually, but deteriorate them over time by reducing the resulting animated skeleton's AC by 1 (beyond 0, to punishing negative numbers!) for every 100 turns since they were de-boned, but not animated.

All monsters should leave hides when butchered and you should be able to wear them or enchant them into armour.
