Three most boring things in Crawl?

Just name three aspects of Crawl you find the most boring. The term "boring" is highly overused in the Tavern and also pretty subjective, so it'd probably be interesting to gather opinions, whine about stuff and in the end make THE ULTIMATE CHART OF BOREDOM AND DISCOURAGEMENT. (inb4 "no, it would be just boring")

So, let me start with:
1. Summoning.
2. That ant vault.
3. Long searches for a demonic/abyssal rune of Zot.

Special mention: boring beetles. Old Crypt could also deserve a spot on the list, but i'll probably never see it anymore.

3. Spectres

1. haste
2. god gifts after the first 2-3 (from okawaru/trog - I haven't played much nemelex, he's probably different)
3. kiting mobs back to empty rooms/corridors.

1 and 3 are optimal, 2 is easier to ignore, although it kills your piety.

Labyrinths?!
I like labyrinths.
In fact I hope that I "hear a distant snort" every time I enter a new level of Lair or the main dungeon.
If anything, I wish there were multiple labyrinths' spawn chance per level of floor.
:D

The loot is nice, but slogging through the labyrinth is one of the most boring parts of crawl. It's a frustrating chore requiring very little thought.

I agree with #2 in general, the summoning school, but some god summons work well imho. Trog summons are short, help clear up an immediate problem, and then vanish. They don't stick around long enough and they're too expensive to cast often enough to be a problem, imho.

I love labyrinths :)

I read the first two ones and was like "This guy is so cool, most def gonna thank him for this message, yeah!" and then you fucking ruined with "Labyrinths" as your third pick :(.

My list, I didn't consider things that are not part of the "normal" game, say, hunting for zigs, for example (which is boring):

1."Item management" (!!)
2. Summons (I don't think allies are that bad though but some monster summons are really annoying as well)
3. Felids
(4) Heal slowly mutation as an extreme case of fiving.

Clearly you people have never been stuck wandering around in a labyrinth for 30 minutes.

Edit: Wait I thought of something I hate way more than labyrinths, I'm gonna take a mulligan.

3. Healers

I'd like to mention that there is a crucial difference things between that you find boring but cannot avoid (monster summons or labyrinths if you despise these) and the ones you choose (felids, for example).

For what it's worth, here is my list:
1. Resting (regaining HP and MP over time)
2. Meaningless fights (this means: most of them)
3. Buff spamming and ring swapping.

I was responding to the 'unavoidable boring things versus boring things you choose' I certainly interpret labs as something you choose (And certainly worth it for just about anyone who can kill a minotaur) But if you really just do find them that tedious, just don't do 'em.

I've had plenty of games which didn't even contain one, it didn't make me unable to complete the game, that puts it in the 'optional' column for me ;)

I personally love Labs, I interpret it as a challenge to see how quickly I can solve the maze, I don't think I've had one that's taken me more than 15 minutes, and that was very very unusual, typically I'm in and out less than half that time.

Things I can't choose
1: Monsters that summon monsters that summon monsters that you have no hope of killing.
2:One path out of the starting vault that leads straight into a jackal pack.
Things I can choose
1:Demigods
2:lab.
3:abyss

This is interesting, I have never found anything in a labyrinth that was really useful. The top loot I can remember are wand of fire and wand of ice, those are not really bad. The weapons, armour, jewelry were always crap. But perhaps I am unlucky.

I don't actually find much of current Crawl boring (other than Orc, a little, sometimes) - although dpeg's point about buff spamming is well taken.

ZoFy wrote:So, let me start with:

For me personally, playing as a summoner is one of the most entertaining things you can do in DCSS. The versatility that summoned minions grant you is unparallelled. Summons can do things like block choke points to secure your escape, take care of invisible monsters without requiring you to slap on a see invisible ring, absorb mummy death curses, and distract enemies, just to name a few. Creative use of summons open up further possibilities on how they can be used. For example, you can throw up a wall of butterflies in between you and the enemy, and then use Haunt to safely attack them from behind the butterfly wall. You can call a group of summons that have poison resistance, then fill the area with mephetic clouds, allowing them to easily dispose of your enemies. The possibilities are nearly endless, and it's great fun coming up with new tactics to use.

The only thing that really bores me with this game is the feeling of monotony that comes after losing a promising character. It makes the first few levels of your next character feel extremely boring.

Using confirm_butcher = never and some combination of the easy_eat options in your init.txt/.rcfile means you'll only have to press c or e once. Using auto_eat_chunks means you'll hardly ever press e at all.

You know, I've been thinking about this off and on, for the last couple days...
And I now feel confident enough to say that:
Considering all the bazaars I've been to, I would rather find an archway to a labyrinth, than a portal to a traveling inter-dimensional caravan.

The raids wouldn't be as dull if you weren't savescumming.

Just sayin'.

I guess mine would be

1) Inventory management, especially on low-strength dudes
2) D:20 - D:26, due to the lack of notable OoD guys
3) D:1 - D:3 as a powerful combo, since you just mash o and tab

3) Related to 2 - Abyss/Pan monotony.

1. D14 - D26
2. Item swapping
3. Buff casting

After I finish the Lair and Orc it seems like the rest of the dungeon is a blur of different types of Trolls/Giants/Footaurs until D27. The new Vault monsters helps this somewhat in that branch, but the rest of the dungeon can be mind numbing. It is always exciting to hit a floor that is different (a mostly lava floor for example). I wish there was more variety or the dungeon was shorter. If I were forced to choose I would probably vote for shorter. I really like that some of the branches have been shortened in recent versions.

2 and 3 bore me enough that I often forget or neglect to optimize myself before a fight and end up dying.

for #1 there are a bunch of easy butcher and auto eat chunks options in the rc/init file, read it and turn on anything that sounds relevant ;)

for jellies, I agree it sucks and there's no way around it until you get a decent ranged attack (sorry pure melee :P)

For Jellies, just grab a sling, some stones, and train Slings to 2. As long as you start shooting at LOS, you should kill them the majority of the time just as they reach you. Pretty much every character I make winds up with at least Slings at 2 just for dealing with Jellies, the only excepts being those who come with other ways to deal with them.

All right, for early jellies....

Besides what TwilightPhoenix just posted:

Use whichever wand you have already picked up, and will likely drop cause it will become near useless when you have developed your principal way of killing things.

This includes a wand of random effects. Chances are you'll get a desired effect, when zapping it.

So Zap, Zap, Zap, Zap that jelly!

Okay, maybe healing and hasting it aren't what you might call desirable, but look at it this way...

You now know that this character is cursed, and dying now will save you thousands upon thousands of turns, playing a character that will die two turns after seeing the Orb.
;)

I find that wands of polymorph are your best friend for characters who have no other means of dealing with jellies. Fighting an early giant frog or a killer bee is much more desirable than fighting a jelly and suffering corrosion.

Yes because it's so easy to run from frogs and killer bees, unlike jellies.
