The only way out of it would have been to swap an Amulet of Carity (which I did not yet have). Self-restoration doesn't work because you are confused and waiting it out doesn't work either, because the moment you recover, you get confused again.

Luckily I managed to stepped out of their range (while confused) in the end. And the character went on to win with 15 runes.

I have lost another character under similar circumstances before, though.
