Do you read the changelog?

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

Do you read the changelog?

Yes, and I also regularly read the commit log to know what's new in trunk.

Do you read the changelog?

I was wondering whether people actually read the changelog. Also whether people prefer a short changelog or a verbose one, but that's not part of the poll.

Re: Do you read the changelog?

There's no option for, "No, but I read the commit logs."

Re: Do you read the changelog?

Now there is. Also apparently editing the poll invalidates votes. Sorry.

Re: Do you read the changelog?

When I create a new character on CSZO, if the default race is human instead of what I picked last time, I hit escape-v to read the change log to see what's new since the last time I read it.

When I continue an existing character, and I get the prompt "press T to transfer your game to the new version," I hit escape (which dumps me into the existing game on the old version) then S, y, v to read the change log and decide whether I like the old version or new version better. I wish there were 1) an option to quit instead of play the old version or 2) an option to view the change log to make an informed decision about whether to upgrade. I don't know where to submit feature requests for dgame or whatever the crawl server software is called.

If I don't read the change log, I find myself reporting new behaviors as bugs, getting killed by new changes I didn't know about, or carefully performing annoying repetitive behaviors that have been helpfully designed out of the game.

I don't know how to read the commit log. If I knew how to do that, it might be a reasonable substitute for the change log, if that's troublesome to maintain.

Re: Do you read the changelog?

I read the git logs when I update my copy of the source, but if you want to keep track of it without that you can view the commit log here.

There are probably other ways to see it, too, but that link is the only one I could remember.

Re: Do you read the changelog?

Where's the option for "Read it? I live it!"?

When I played only stable, I would read through much of the change log on a new release. Now that I've been accustomed to playing trunk, I just read the release notes and all I could think was "That's not new!"

Re: Do you read the changelog?

I try to skim through the commit log every so often. For every interesting commit there's approximately 24 "change a typo in a comment" commits, so mostly I don't bother and just hear about impactful changes in #crawl.

I skim over things every new version to get a bit of a jist of what to expect.

Re: Do you read the changelog?

I read commits about every two days. That's how often I pull updates and recompile the game, and I always check if there is something new and what has changed.

Re: Do you read the changelog?

No - I just play trunk online and when I find a change I don't like, I go and complain about it on ##crawl.
