Re: Demographics of this Community

Age: 22
Sex: M
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Citizenship: USA
Languages spoken: English
Education: BA in English, BA in History w/Political Science minor
Family Status: Single.
Occupation: Unemployed. I'm bad. I'll be teaching soon enough.
Computer platform: Windows XP on the desktop, Ubuntu on laptop.
DCSS versions played: Since .7
Play Crawl because: No other turn-based fantasy game, save Brogue (and Fire Emblem), respects its players enough to ditch tedium and reliance on spoilers.
Background story as a Rogue-like Player: Crawl was the only game I could find worth playing on the Ubuntu Software Center, before I figured out how to find/install programs on Linux. I dunno who maintains that thing, but consider updating it-- new players come in from unexpected sources.
Reason for user name: I don't like having to think of clever usernames
Reason for avatar: It's glorious
First Rogue-like played: Crawl.

Aged
Gender: Yes please!
Ethnicity: Pictish
Citizenship: UK
Education: Doctoral level.
Occupation: Public health academic and practitioner (about 50% of each).
Computer platform: Windows.
DCSS versions played: Since .5.
Play Crawl because: I could quit anytime I wanted. I just choose not to.
Background story as a Rogue-like Player: It was the afternoon of my eighty-first birthday, and I was in bed with my catamite when Ali announced that the archbishop had come to see me.
Reason for user name: Pretty obvious
Reason for avatar: I'm a donkey and I lick myself clean.
First Rogue-like played: Angband. I'm glad to have moved on.

I publish as Dr C. Interval, and that's how you can find me on PubMed.

You should shorten that to Dr. C. and let everyone think it stands for Crawl. :)

That would be an agreeable change. Currently everyone thinks it stands for Creep.

Re: Demographics of this Community

Age: 41
Sex: Male
Citizenship: USA
Languages spoken: 'Murrican, though I can speak English if I put my mind to it.
Education: B.S.
Family Status: Married, one daughter
Occupation: Government IT
Computer platform: Debian (work), Mac (home)
DCSS versions played: Since 0.4
Play Crawl because: More fun than Nethack's play-the-metagame-not-the-game, or Angband's play-conservatively-and-die-of-boredom-or-play-boldly-and-die-horribly, or ADOM's a-bad-choice-on-turn-100-means-you're-screwed-on-turn-50k-and-you-can't-fix-it.
Background story as a Rogue-like Player: Discovered Rogue during an early computer class on a mainframe while waiting for programs to compile. Played a bunch since then, including but not limited to (and in no particular order): Nethack, Angband, ADOM, Omega, Castle of the Winds, Wizard's Castle, The Dungeon of Doom, Sword of Fargoal, Diablo I/II, Shiren the Wanderer, and Linley's Crawl.
Reason for user name: I chose this one for Puzzle Pirates back in the day for reasons that are irrelevant in my life now. It's useful as a gaming name because, well, it has no relation to my life, so that means it's just a game.
First Rogue-like played: Rogue. On a VAX. Hence my right to use the term "whippersnapper".
You fall off the wall. You have a feeling of ineptitude.

Re: Demographics of this Community

Age: 20
Sex: M
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Citizenship: United States
Languages: English, a bit of German.
Education: College
Occupation: Student
Operating System: Windows XP (out of lack of a sufficently good computer to run 7 without making it impossible to play games)
DCSS Style: Tiles Offline, Trunk if possible.
Reason for Playing: It's fun.
Roguelike History: I started playing Nethack via Vulture's Eye, then changed over to SLASH'EM via Vulture's Claw. I loved the idea (and still do), hated the incredibly high difficulty curve. I could never stand entirely-ASCII interfaces, as I'm much more of a visual player, and thus didn't like a lot of Rougelikes due to that (though I eventually learned to put up with text adventure/IF games). Eventually I stumbled onto the Dungeon Crawl TVTropes page, downloaded it, and rapidly found that it was much less hair-pullingly difficult than Nethack.
Username History: It was funny at the time.
Avatar History: n/a... so far.
First Rogue-like: Nethack

Age: 28
Sex: Male
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Citizenship: English
Languages spoken: English
Education: BA English Lit and Film Studies (yeah, wasn't thinking in terms of career.)
Family Status: Unmarried, no bastards, one rat, one cat, one beloved
Occupation: Team administrator and analyst with NHS
Computer platform: Windows, ascii (because i enjoy getting excited about strangely coloured parentheses)
DCSS versions played: From about .5 i think
Play Crawl because: Long term love of the genre and procedural games in general. Picked DCSS over other roguelikes because of the gods and magic. Love that feeling of a metanarrative so hard to achieve in a randomised game
Background story as a Rogue-like Player: Memories of my dad teaching me Rogue on the spectrum (and being a little sucked in by the shamelessly lurid and misrepresentative http://cdn1.spong.com/pack/r/o/rogue208421/_-Rogue-Spectrum-48K-_.jpg cover art
Reason for user name: Edda geek - like the idea of the wolf in the sanctum. Do some recording under the name.
Reason for avatar: Chaos Uber Alles! Hail Eris! etc.
First Rogue-like played: Rogue on the spectrum

Re: Demographics of this Community

Age: 36
Sex: Male
Ethnicity: "White"
Citizenship: USA
Languages spoken: English. Remember smatterings of French and Latin from school, plus basic basic Japanese.
Education: Tons of college but never graduated (though I have an Associate's in there somewhere); mostly film studies, some theater and history
Family Status: Married, no kids, 3 cats, 1 dog, 1 housemate.
Occupation: Graphic Designer/Video Guy/DJ/Music Promoter/Voiceover Artist Aging Hipster
Or as my business card says...
Image
Computer platform: Mac, Windows, Ubuntu
DCSS versions played: Trunk tiles
Play Crawl because: It's the best dungeon-crawler, ever. It's what I wanted games like this to be like for years, if that makes any sense. Also I need a proper distraction while rendering video projects, and I'm on self-imposed permanent hiatus from my favorite online community.
Background story as a Rogue-like Player: Remember playing HACK as a kid; years later tried NetHack and hated it, but always liked the concept of the roguelike. Was playing Dwarf Fortress until it expanded into the Z-axis. Also play Dungeons of Dredmor but prefer the pace of Crawl.
Reason for user name: Old nickname, eternal Internet handle, current DJ alias
Reason for avatar: I often play as a Troll Monk named "Banner." HULK SMASH SIGMUND!
First Rogue-like played: ...Hack? Maybe Moria? I have been a computer geek since 1981 or so.

Ethnicity: Caucasian
Citizenship: Spanish
Languages spoken: Spanish, English and bits of Japanese
Education: Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering
Family Status: Single
Occupation: Researcher
Computer platform: Windows at home, Ubuntu at work
DCSS versions played: Since 0.7, always ASCII offline
Play Crawl because: Very dynamical battles, no spoilery required, a lot of styles allowed, good interface and you can even design vaults.
Background story as a Rogue-like Player: I found Rogue in a on line implementation 6 years ago, then found rogue-like genre and went to NetHack, later Slash'em, I tried ADOM and finally heard about DCSS as a ruthless, hard, unfair game and I fell in love with. Later on I have played DoomRL, AlienRL, Steamband and some other that I cannot remember.
Reason for user name: Taken from a random generator of names of some sort. There's no story behind.
Reason for avatar: It was an attempt to design a player tile for a Treant species
First Rogue-like played: Rogue
