Let's Plays

Let's Plays seem to be popular, so here's a list of (completed) Dungeon Crawl LPs.

Screenshot LPs

* LP on the GiantitP forums (3-rune run/funny) - The epic tale of Meepo.
* LP on the Bay12 forums (15-rune run/informative)
* LP on the touhou forum (15-rune run) - v0.6 with touhou sprites and all monsters as Yukkris and took on the dungeon as Nue worshiping Flandre (Xom) and this is their forum relay.

Video LPs

* LP on Youtube - Ends in defeat on Zot:5.
* Speed run on Youtube - SpEn in 2hrs.

Does anyone have more links to share? I'll add them to the list.

Edit: LPs have a high abandonment rate, so I'll only add completed LPs to the list.

Bluh, I was expecting a video Let's Play. There's only a couple of them on Youtube, and even fewer of them being with tiles.

How about having them here? If we create a Let's Play section here on the forum, would you guys post in it?

Let's Plays are actually quite a lot of work. They should certainly be welcome if anybody wants to make one, but I don't think we're going to get so many that they can't piggyback on Crazy Yiuf's Corner or YASD! YAVP! and characters in progress too.

They aren't a whole lot of work if they're videos. Just record yourself playing and verbalize what you're thinking.

My personal favourite: somebody modded 0.6 with touhou sprites and all monsters as Yukkris and took on the dungeon as Nue worshipping Flandre (Xom) and this is their forum relay.

I put out a crawl vid every weekend for my channel http://www.youtube.com/user/BountyHunterSAx. . . and often more than that. At this point I'm up to 200+ vids including:

0.) SpWz: "Starting a Spriggan Wizard". My most popular (and a totally outdated!) video series. From before my 1st win: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL ... hGjPzCEq0Z
1.) DrMo: NomNomulous, a Draconian Monk-turned-Transmuter. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL ... i7pcAGt4NI
2.) OpWz: Octowich, An Octopode Wizard, {15} rune run, with a side of firestorm/lich-i-ness http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL ... lOXDeylThQ
3.) SpWz: Jabgut, A first-foray into the world of stabbing. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL ... 7cW_qYYR5M

I'm reading through the thread at Giant In the Playground and there is so much wrong and bad information. It makes me :'(, especially when I think of the ways that I perhaps led other astray in the past.

On the plus side, it has the epic of Meepo. :)

I'll admit I only came in at about .11 or so, thus this thread for me is making it hard to discern what is bad information and what is simply information about an out of date version. (Significantly out of date at that.) I mean, some of the things I'm used to don't even seem to be in the game yet.

Still, on the whole the player definitely is making a lot of mistakes and encouraging others to make those same mistakes. I feel as though a better LP to read would be one by someone like PsiEye or Minmay on this forum, someone who knows what they're doing and can teach while they play.

Well, it's not just him. I mean you have comments like this
Wow, deep dwarfs and Cheibriados are a really good match. I just made it to the lair and I already have several resistances and all my stats in the 30s.

And this
and definitely just burn the scroll of fog, those things are useless.

That should make you cry.

And then Meepo / Cog gets rid of a randart buckler with rPois, +Lev while using a dagger because "it got in the way of spellcasting too much, sadly." Mind you he's been wearing an rPois ring from identifying it early on. And it's not enough to just drop it or not use it until he's gotten some shield in, he sacs it to Nem... ugh.

Goodness, yeah, those poor fools. Such terrible advice.

And getting rid of a buckler like that? What was he thinking? I mean that buckler is possibly one of the most valuable things he could have at that point! Good grief. Bad gameplay over bad. No wonder this guy almost never won a game.

Would there be interest in more modern let's plays? I was thinking of doing a screenshot one, although maybe I could look into fraps if there's more interest in video ones. Video ones to me just seem like there isn't much way to avoid having an 8 hour video, which is probably a lot longer than anyone would want to watch. I took somewhat of notes on my last merfolk win, but then I got lazy when I posted the YAVP and didn't really edit them into full english sentences.

Why not just voice-over an replay;they're recorded online..or record them localy, and cut it together.
dont need to make a 8hrs/playthrough..

//

works with windows btw

But (I assume) it doesn't work with with tiles? Is there any way to replay the game with a graphical interface?

I was thinking the same thing. It takes a lot of dedication to sit through an 8 hour (or let's be more fair to most of my wins 16 hour) video; however, a screenshot one might be more palatable to people. My big issue is that I don't play tiles anymore so any let's play video from me would be even less enjoyable to people :D.

What would probably be the most enjoyable to people would be a heavily edited video that cuts all the "down time" and chaff out. So any grey and white mobs would probably not even show, only situations that were dangerous, skill and spell choices changes, things like that. Of course that means it would take even more time to create something interesting, enjoyable and useful.

Generally after new Updates I think there is no problem with doing Let's Plays - with a game like DCSS which constantly updates itself, stuff can change quite a bit over time. As for the issue of long-winded videos, one idea I had for some DCSS Playlist videos might be 'jump points' so people might jump to specific events in your video where something you think as noteworthy might be happening. If you are a fan of editing you might also 'speed up' your video so that boring parts go by faster until you get to the less boring parts (this will probably work best with post commentary if you do it).

Note that while I use Fraps for a lot of my content, you may also look into other recording software. I personally recorded all my DCSS videos with something called BB Flashback Express, and for newer systems you may look into other Recording Software that captures your Destop instead of just the game; I know captnduck had stated recently to me that he was using OBS to do his streaming on Twitch.

Here's another LP: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL ... YzXpA3E56O
It begins in the temple (because the first few levels are really boring), and ends in Orc:4. Yes, it was a VERY stupid death.
The let's player is still pretty new to the game, so he makes quite a lot of mistakes. I do still find it very fun to watch.
