Deific Denomination

I realized something today. We require some wordsmithing.

What nouns do we use to describe a worshiper of a given god? Some seem pretty natural- a Jiyvan, a Makhelbite, Munan, Troglodyte, Xomite. Others... are harder to figure out. In particular, I tripped today trying to figure out chat to call someone who worships Chie. A Chiesian? Chiebriaite? Cheibriadosan? Hoo.

So, just of fun, what do you think we should call the various religions in the Crawl pantheon?

Re: Deific Denomination

We don't need to use the God's name as the basis for the follower's name. Consider irl religions: Christians are named after Christ, true, but Muslims are not named after Allah, Jews are not named after Yahweh, Hindus are not named after Brahma, etc. There's some latitude for creativity. Oka's people could be Warsons and Wardaughters or something like that.

Agree with Grimm.

For Chei, for example:

Tortoises
Ponderites

Re: Deific Denomination

We should use the god and piety level titles. Because that would be amazingly complicated.

Royal Jelly! Pandemonic!

Re: Deific Denomination

Are we talking about for Tavern trash-talking purposes, or for in-game somehow (in the descriptions of Gods- "Worshipers of Makhleb are known as Makhlebites or Blood Dancers" e.g.?

If you wanted to establish these so that people would know what you meant, they would have to be set out in some authoritative place.

Re: Deific Denomination

Just for our own trash talking and fun. That's why I started off with names based off the gods- you want it to be obvious. (For example, if I say I was a "Xomite" while discussing a YASD, you can infer I followed Xom. If I say I was a "slacker", you won't know I'm telling you I followed Chie unless you know the jargon. I'd like terminology that doesn't need spoilers to use :p). They don't need to be name derivatives to be obvious though, it's just where I stared (for example, Ponderite sounds pretty cool, and is obviously a Chie reference).

We don't really need in game names, since you play in the 1st person, alone in a dungeon. In game you'd probably want more flavorful, distinct names though, like the piety titles. They wouldn't need to be obvious, since they'd be given.

It's not meant to be serious! Just some word manipulation, word association, and maybe punning. An Okawaru-ior? A Yred-head? Shinners!

Re: Deific Denomination

I always refer to the gods as GOD-ite (Trogite, Sif Munite, Nemelexite, Jiyvite, TSOite, ...) and when referring to characters I've grown attached to as GOD-ie (Troggie, Beoghie, Xommie, ...). However, I do like to think of Zin worshippers as Zinners because Zin is so picky, you can only do things wrong anyway. ;)

Okawarrior sounds awesome, because Warriors probably would be to Okawaru as Paladins are(/were) to TSO and prepending Oka- to them makes it obvious. Fun!

Re: Deific Denomination

I tend to use -ite as a default, but there are a few exceptions:

Jiyva has Jiyvans.

Troglodyte for Trog, unless I'm feeling lazy, then they're Troggies.

Sif has Munies. (But it's the Fedhasites who hand out flowers in the airport.)
You fall off the wall. You have a feeling of ineptitude.

Fedhas: Oklob Flower Children.
... and forgive us our YASDs,
As we forgive our developers,
And lead us not into the Abyss,
But deliver us from Sigmund,
For Thine is the Roguelike,
the Orb and the Victory,
now and forever.
