It's an American imitation of Ninja Warrior, with more emphasis on elapsed time than simply completing the course. (And some direct competition on certain sections of the course.) The save scumming aspect comes in because you get as many tries as you like to clear a section of the course, but that adds to your time, so you may be eliminated from the competition if you fail too often.
Overall I'd say it's an inferior imitation, but there's definitely more schadenfreude in watching someone make multiple runs at a particular set of obstacles (instead of Ninja Warrior's one-and-done for failures), especially when you can see how badly fatigue is setting in.
So in roguelike terms, it's non-hardcore Diablo.
You fall off the wall. You have a feeling of ineptitude.
