Sorry if you disagree, but fuck Grinder, and fuck whoever thought it's a good idea to stick a monster with paralysis and a Pain weapon in the early dungeon. I have now lost FIVE characters (some of them pretty promising too) to this asshole just this evening. You can't run away from him, since he just blinks around, and even if he didn't - one paralysis and you're done for.

Fuck this shit. Seriously.

My goddamn nerves, apparently. Or how much bullshit crawl players are willing to take. Regular imps are almost impossible to kill for most early game characters, giving them more HP, stronger weapon and the ability to make you useless for a few turns is just plain cheating. And meeting the guy at level 5 or 6 - I understand. But twice of those five times he spawned on level 2, usually very close to the stairs.

My biggest worry is that Grinder might overtake Sigmund in terms of fearsome reputation.

Grinder is probably fine where he is if Paralyze gets downgraded to a less crippling status effect. Confusion or Slow are probably fine. It makes for a nice change to have an early-game unique that isn't completely shut down by Mephitic Cloud, although a good part of that is Mephitic Cloud just needing a nerf.

The pain weapon gives him a little teeth, so you can't just walk him up a staircase and leave him. I'd say that minimum level of damage is necessary even on a D2 unique.

also, doesn't grinder have DEPTH: 3-6, !Lair, !Slime
(compare with sigmund, DEPTH: 2-7)

I typically have little trouble with Grinder; he seems just as threatening as a regular imp, pesky but nothing to worry about. The problem I usually have is that he wakes up every other monster in the vicinity, and suddenly I'm facing Grinder, orcs, gnolls and phantoms. all at once.

I find Grinder to be easy to kill if you are a caster. Are you a summoner? Spammals kills him fast. Conjurer? He's dumb enough to walk into conjured flame.

I haven't met him yet with a melee character, so I can't say anything about that, but so far its:

Me: 4
Grinder: 0

Using nothing but spammals / conjure flame.

Maybe I am just good at killing Grinder? I just recently met him with my first melee character, a Kobold Chaos Knight... I killed him with minor injuries.

This game have a wide branch for necromancers, all kinds of zombies and two Death Gods. So, I suppose, rising a post from the dead is not a problem.

On topic - for melee characters - he is a pain in the ass, if you choose to fight him. But he fairly easy to lose in corridors.
