Do you listen to music while playing Crawl?

I was just wondering if anyone likes to listen to music while playing Crawl. Is there anything that makes the game more special for you?

For my part, I like to listen to metal, and occasionally the soundtrack to Spamalot. (Monty Python, anyone?)

I'll often listen to npr while rouge-liking. It's a good place to pull names from, you can pay attention to the stories when gameplay is dull, and tune it out when things get tense. Or if it's late enough, I'll switch over to the jazz channel. Sometimes when I want something awesome and video-gamey (without actually being from a video game) for crawling I'll put one of the homestuck albums on.

None of which are options in the poll. Other for me!

There are a lot of games played in blessed silence though.

I've found that popular types of music are too energetic for me to Crawl by, because Crawl demands patience and clear thinking. My Crawling music of choice is pre-Beethoven classical, especially baroque, which promotes a useful sense of calm and confidence.

I'm a one-build player at the moment but I've thought about finding some spooky stuff for playing a necromancer. And maybe metal would work for a TrBe.

When I play Crawl, I usually listen some melodic metal.

Then again, I usually listen some melodic metal all the time ... :)

Ideally I'd have a podcast or something to listen to. Or I'll listen to World War Z's audiobook for the fiftieth time.

Baroque harpsichord, normally in the french style ala Rameau or Couperin. If not that, Gould (the only well-recorded pianist who can consistently play the music properly) Bach.

I find that it fits the theme very well!

It's really interesting how diverse the tastes of people here are. I know that I am eagerly awaiting the release of Surtur Rising, by Amon Amarth, later in March. I also started listening to NPR online now, and it's quite interesting. Thanks for the suggestion, mageykun.

I recently became aware of Mogwai, player a bit of Crawl while listening to it. Can't imagine listening to anything with significant lyrics.

Just acquired (through a scroll!) seasons 1-8 of Penn and Teller's Bullshit!, so that'll be playing in the background for a long while.

Sometimes, when playing under Trog, I listen to Metallica's "Kill 'em all!" album.
And at other times, it's Dire Straits' "Brothers in Arms" song.

How appropriate! :D

I usually listen to the Baldur's Gate soundtrack, though the more epic themes tend to make me overzealous...

Well, I don't play Transmuters too successfully, but I can certainly think of a moment when Rhapsody of Fire's "Power of Thy Dragonflame" would be very appropriate as well.
Also, I yet have to find an elec weapon and play under TSO to fully appreciate "Holy Thunderforce" (from the same band).

There must be dozens of examples like these.

Basically this. There's always a 100 episodes of SOMETHING on my phone. Right now it's This Week in Virology, which is awesome, but it's too difficult to absorb everything and focus on Crawl at the same time. So... nothing right now. Sometimes Futurama or Community in the background.

Most of the music I like isn't conducive to crawling. 90's stoner rock, j-pop and german opera... nah.

personally i actually usually listen to talk shows while i crawl. particularly The Non-Prophets. listening to Jeff Dee(who you might know for his work found in monster manuals in old editions of D&D!) rant or Matt Dillahunty go off on tangents is really great.

...There's also the added level of irony of listening to an atheist podcast while playing a game filled with gods.

i wouldn't make it to the temple with slayer.
mostly a subset of what i usually listen to, with anything vocal (that i have to pay a mind to) out the window. dub, drone, ambient, idm, that sort of thing, plus a healthy dose of 50s and 60s jazz (bop, modal, etc.)

I find that atmospheric electronic, dark ambiance, death industrial and even soundtracks work well while playing DCSS. Dead Can Dance, Brighter Death Now, Yen Pox, Coil... anything upbeat and fast doesn't mesh well for me.

Now I mostly listen to music from other dungeon crawling games, notably those from Atlus games with music done by Shoji Meguro (Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, etc)

Mostly ambient stuff with some battle music thrown in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5_dbyxLQNw

haven't listened to any ramadanman since the self-titled ep (which was quite good).
i've been with sbtrkt (have to look it up every-single-time) and machinedrum at work the last few days.
i also crawl in silence lately (sounds like a fetish.)

If you want some atmosphere of "I have been cast here for my sins, and by exploring I am to repent", you can try this one:
http://studioeres.com/immortal/soundtrack

The soundtrack for a tower defense game galled "Immortal Defense", as sad and noble as the game itself.

Also, perhaps I could suggest not an album, but rather a program to generate the ambient.
http://umopit.ru/AuraEng.htm
This nifty program can sit in your tray and fill your room with sounds of forest: birds singing, campfire crackling, creek flowing, rain falling serenity - somewhat a resemblance of thoughts your adventurer could have while resting on the cold dungeon floor.

Also HUGE PROPS to Minmay. =) I listen to Nectarine Demoscene Radio sometimes, but the blips distract me from pondering on the situation. Cheibriados' followers definitely have a reason to move slow and to strike those who act too fast...

Also I listen to a Russian band called "Аквариум" (Aquarium), which is a mix between rock, instrumental music, new age, reggae and meditative music. Their leader, БГ, sings about various things, and their songs sometimes are too elaborate to understand from the first attempt, but listening to the music is interesting.
You can tune on to their songs here:
http://www.101.ru/?an=port_channel_mp3& ... it=2&fav=1 (some advertisements are blocking the way: click the dash-underlined link to proceed)
Though their music is not to be listening to all the time.

that's actually rather cute. i prefer the droning sort (think buddha machine) but it makes excellent white noise if you're tired of your co-workers bad jokes and yet don't want to put on music.
it's crashing all the time on linux under wine, though.

Crawl HAS sound effects?

More on topic, though, am I wrong to like to listen to remixes of Mega Man music while playing Crawl? I do find that since I happen to have an album from OCRemix that contains Elec Man, Air Man, AND Spark Man music that I do tend to play a lot of Air Elementalists... :D

The music from the SMT games is pretty awesome- I usually end up humming it for days after playing. And in retrospect, it probably would go good with dungeon crawling...

Actually, come to think of it, my copy of Nocturne came with a soundtrack! I'll have to give that a try.

Regarding remixes of game music, I'm really loving the PPPPPPowerup! album. It has remixes of the VVVVVV soundtrack, which are a lot more suited to general listening than the original chiptune style soundtrack.

Generally I just listen to what I'm usually listening to when I'm playing crawl. That's mostly various kinds of metal and rock, and occasionally some electronic stuff. Maybe a little more relaxed music than usual.

I must say that a few years of gaming experience make me do voiceovers of my games, doing "Pooh!" when I use Mephitic Cloud, "Baghh!" when another fireball finds its target, and so on.

I don't think the CD that comes with the game has every song, but it has most of the cool dungeon and battle songs that really matter. But yeah, it's music I already listen to when running down endless corridors fighting insane monsters, so it feels like home for me. Just added Digital Devil Saga to the mix. 8-)

A lot of the time I like to play with my headset off, as the cord keeps getting in the way on my new set. That said however, sometimes one just needs some music to really get immersed into the game, and for that, I've mostly been using the odd game soundtrack(e.g. xenogears, Aria of Sorrow), stuff by boards of canada, or older trance music that borders on ambient.

I think classical and some jazz would work really well too, but my knowledge of them isn't good enough to seek out appropriate songs. I know a fair number of composer names, and in some cases can even name the songs, but that's about it. XD

Of late it's pretty much been all New Pornographers all of the time:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_Pornographers

Though it can be spectacularly unfitting or oddly appropriate for Crawl. A lot of Canadian Rock / Indie Rock / Folk / Power Pop is doing quite well right now. Particularly when it's from Vancouver or Montreal. I'm kind of stuck in Toronto, but the city gets a number of fairly big acts (domestic or otherwise) to any number of public (and free) venues. So at least there's that. (Only nostalgia will lure me to a stadium, but I'm a sucker for all types of live music.)

Personally, I only like listening to instrumental or ambient music while playing any roguelikes. I have a playlist on media player that contains a mix of

The original Trent Reznor Quake soundtrack
The original unused Hellraiser soundtrack by Coil
The Project Aftershock Quake soundtrack
The Official Hellraisrer soundtracks to the first 3 movies
and a few semi random tracks like the theme to Puppet Master, an all acoustic instrumental cover of "Animal" by W.A.S.P.
a few select choice cuts from the Doom/Doom 2 soundtrack.

I usually have this selection set on random play in the background while playing crawl or other roguelikes.

Usually a Russian singer named Vladimir Vysotsky. Sometimes Bach. Dethklok's Murmaider (screaming along of course) for merfolk, which perhaps accounts for my horrible survival record with them.

Generally I listed to the usual progressive/psychedelic rock stuff I usually listen too.
However, I invariably switch to this for Zot:5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QS0q3mGPGg ;) It improves your morale by a mile.
I'm sure I could improve my play by listening to some slow and smooth jazz while playing to keep me calm and away from tabspam.
Trying this now. On streak. Wish me luck.

Lately it's been electronic or Rob Zombie. I wouldn't recommend either = get you killed.

Some chill trance or silence if i'm trying to win
