What's your god's gender?

I love the fact that in crawl the gender of gods is undecided, since this leaves room for the player's imagination. So, have you settled on something in your mind? For me, most are still ambigous, though I think I prefer Kiku to be female and gravitate towards Ely and Fedhas being male. For some reasons. I don't like the usual male/female cliches, though, so I sometimes question myself.

The only one that is clear to me is Okawaru. For me she's definitely a woman, because I've been enjoying "Xena, Warrior Princess" too much (yeah, it is cheesy, that's why I love it). I imagine her to be like the old Xena before her conversion to Goody Twoshoes. Whenever I invoke Heroism before a fight, I feel like I'd want to play Xena's battle theme and yodel, when I rush in.

Though, with my success rate, I suppose I should rather play this.

Re: What's your god's gender?

Okawaru is one of the gods that's most male in my mind, because the image I have of him in my mind is a cross between the old master of martial arts archetype and a samurai. The god that's most female to me is Sif Muna, who I picture as the stern librarian of magic. Most of the other gods work as either male or female for me, though there are also gods where I've settled on them not really having a gender. I picture Fedhas Madash and Jiyva as more 'forces of nature' (Jiyva is slime and Fedhas is plants), and Xom would probably switch genders just for the hell of it.

Re: What's your god's gender?

I'm grateful the devs leave this open to interpretation. Here's the mythology I've constructed based on existing tropes and the niche each god seems to fill:

Ashenzari- The only one I'm really undecided on, I prefer to leave Ash a mystery.
Beogh - I always figured male, but now that I think about it, a female god of the orcs would be pretty interesting?
Cheibriados - Male. Incomprehensibly old and contemplative.
Elyvilon - The embodiment of female compassion.
Fedhas Madash - Female, in the tradition of the earth-mother/fertility goddess. Though, the name sounds male.
Jiyva - A genderless mass of sliminess.
Kikubaaqudgha - I see Kiku as a thin, skeletal "Death" figure who no longer has a discernible gender.
Lugonu - Female. C'mon, it's Lucy. Besides, as the outcast seeking revenge, "hell hath no fury..."
Makhleb- I'm split between seeing him as a generic "king of demons" versus a disembodied force of destruction.
Nemelex Xobeh - Male, but lacking the masculine qualities of his peers.
Okawaru - Male. Thanks in part to Wiglaf, I associate him to some extent with Mountain Dorfs.
Sif Muna - Female. Very clever and intelligent but not wise as Chei.
The Shining One - Genderless. TSO strikes me as an abstract, disembodied deity, not a mythological, lowercase g "god".
Trog- Male. I mean, it's "Brothers in Arms," not "Sisters in Arms."
Vehumet - The masculine counterpart to Sif-- more focused and single-minded, destroys opponents rather than outwitting them.
Xom - unknown/variable. Xom is whatever it wants to be, and likes to keep you guessing.
Yredelemnul - Male, though in decay and on his way to looking like Kiku.
Zin - The masculine counterpart to Elyvilon. Prefers justice to mercy.

Never gave much thought to the topic myself though. The only interpretation that strikes me as weird is Lugonu having a gender at all - c'mon, it's a deity whose domain is an infinite realm of everlasting chaos.

I always assumed that all the gods are male. Probably because all of them refered to as "god", not "goddes".

Re: What's your god's gender?

Ashenzari - Sounds female. Also the one god who actually wants to be nice to you. But of course, the other major gods got all jelly and decided to pin the poor thing to the ceiling to make themselves more attractive.
Beogh - Male, divine racist of orcishness.
Cheibriados - Male, the god of being cool and laid back. Also is a cool guy. Also makes you stronk and wise. Which is cool too, you see.
Elyvilon - Male, unless some weirdly picked alias.
Fedhas Madash - Male, I approve of the idea of the guy being some kind of divine druid-like guy.
Jiyva - Genderless with a pinch of man. Never asks for permission before putting his dirty hands on you. (oh you)
Kikubaaqudgha - Male... Probably.
Lugonu - Female, due to obvious reasons. (why hello there Lucy how is it going down the in the abyss)
Makhleb - The Big Bad Demon guy.
Nemelex Xobeh - Male.
Okawaru - Male, old man going through his attic and randomly tossing stuff down to you.
Sif Muna - Female bookworm.
The Shining One - Male, fist of holy wrath.
Trog - Male, raging mad someone.
Vehumet - Male, because the name sounds so.
Xom - Male, the childish troll of lies and deception. Finds it hilarious when you think otherwise.
Yredelemnul - Male, ?
Zin - Godfather.

As you can see, I find most of them male.

I can see where your coming from, as for the most part I think that way as well, unless something sounds flat out Female about the gods, (can anyone here say that they think Sif Muna has ANY sort of Male Quality about her, or that her description gives off even a whiff of masculinity?) but then that's just an off hand look. If I actually look at the descriptions for the gods and associated them with something - some come off as Female or Male respectively (Xom sounds like a Witch for example and Okawaru sounds like he's Odin from Norse Mythology, to a lesser extent, The Shining One made me thinking of a concept I hear ' What if Jesus was a Woman'.)

I wonder, has anyone's perspectives on the Genders of the Gods changed at all? Like did you think of a god as being one gender for a while before converting your thinking to another gender for one reason or another?

Maybe it's just me but then I feel like trying to look at things differently can be a beneficial thing in my life.

Elyvilon, Jivya, Lugonu, Ashenzari, and Sif Muna are female.

Makhleb, Yredelemnul, Kikubaaqudgha, and Fedhas are truly genderless.

Beogh, Cheibriados, Nemelex Xobeh, Okawaru, Trog, Vehemut, Zin, and the Shining One are male. Xom is whatever Xom wishes to be at the moment.
