How large is the Crawl community?

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

How large is the Crawl community?

This is on CYC because I have no idea where else to put it, and also because I don't know if this information can be found somewhere already.

I also realize that there are a lot of ways to define the "crawl community" but I'm not not looking for anything specific, I'm just curious. How many people are on CAO/CDO/CßO/etc? How many local downloads have there been of each version of Crawl? Are these questions so un-answerable that it's not worth asking?

Re: How large is the Crawl community?

If you go to /Tavern/Members/sort:Last active, most recent first and page back, counting 50 names per page, you can see that about 350 people have logged in to the Tavern within the last thirty days, out of a total registered count of 1552.

It's really a factor of how much everyone eats divided by a combine factor of how much everyone exercises and metabolism.

It's small enough that no one I know has ever turned to me out of the blue to ask me if I knew where to find the Orb of Zot. Unlike the Amulet of Yendor.

Re: How large is the Crawl community?

I'm sure the Tavern regulars are only a small slice of the total player community.

Wasn't there a survey done recently?

Other things to check:
- downloads
- tournament participants
- users on IRC

The main thing I'd like to know is # of downloads over the past year. Though I'm not sure what that would tell you, as I've downloaded the game many many times in that period (move between systems, upgrade to new version, reinstall in shame after having deleted the game in frustration)

Re: How large is the Crawl community?

Some guy came up with some law that said the total size of the community is 100 times the amount of the participating community.

So just multiply the number of people on IRC and tavern by 100 and you got a rough estimate.

I forgot what it's called and it's wildly inaccurate, but it's better than nothing.

I heard the survey had about 5000 respondents, which is what led me to ask the question.

Re: How large is the Crawl community?

The current survey had that many respondents? Was that the first time a link to the survey was included in the program itself?
When I read the OP, I immediately thought of the survey as well, but the only results I found were from February 2010, and included only 250 responses.

BlackSheep: I had to lobby for this quite a bit, but last year's survey (still open for a bit) finally got the in-game announcement. In particular, it's the first time we could reach strictly local players.

Results for the old survey are here: http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/2009- ... ey-results
(There are download numbers.) It will be very interesting to compare the results.

One at a time, you mean. In all my years of Crawling, I've never found another live player in the dungeon. Lots of dead ones, but never a live one.

I raise a toast to all of my absent friends here.

That's fun because my dreams are full of shadows who ergo are.
Until I wake.
Last night I met a lot of interesting and extremely optimistic ones.
They vanished nonetheless.
Too bad.
That's why I tend to consider Nicolae's assertion as a stronger one.

Re: How large is the Crawl community?

I personally surprised that community is big as it is. And pretty active as well. I'm not saying that Crawl don't deserve it, but it's far from mainstream. And though tiles brought it little closer, for majority of gamers it's still a goofy nonsence from the stone age.

What I'd like to know, is what's the average IQ of the Crawl community.

Crawl has one of the bet communities I have stumbled on. It's an awesome game and I have gotten a few of my friends to play.

The game has a lot of quite large communities that play offline and share screenshots on imageboards and forums.
