Wizmode Rampages

Do you ever just get so frustrated with early deaths that you wizmode up a true beast and just mow down the dungeon?

I was guilty of this after about my first month of playing.. but I got so disenchanted with it that I never finished that particular game. Never again.

Never. It's far more satisfying to build a boss character and mow things down the normal way.

I did it once to see how many lives it would take a spriggen to kill Mennas with a quick blade.

Far, far too many.

Go back with a dagger and Stabbing of about 16 (and enough stealth to keep him asleep) and you won't have a problem.

Then do it again. And again. Once for every time you died trying it with the quick blade.
You fall off the wall. You have a feeling of ineptitude.

Re: Wizmode Rampages

Oooh, i LOVE doing this, and it's probably the sole reason I can't win legitimately.

This week, I made an Octopode Berserker with 8 +9 +9 rings of slaying. The other day I made a DDFi of Xom with 255 Necromancy and a pain branded axe. Last week i tried to run a Spriggan Pacifist with a permanent haste enchant. This evening, I'm going to make a HuHu of Jiyva and start him at max piety just to see what happens. I'm also considering forcing all the lair branches to spawn so I can have a 17 rune win.

I've never used wiz mode. I can understand its value for testing and for experimenting with tactics but wouldn't doing what you describe be like playing roulette and deciding where to put the ball rather than spinning the wheel, i.e. be pointless and very quickly boring?

If DCSS is a casino, Wizmode is like being the "house". The house always wins. So personally I've not messed with wizmode in like a year. I suppose it can be helpful though to test certain stat and gameplay mechanics, then again that can spoil the fun of learning by deaths

I don't know. For a looong time, I had trouble getting even "easy" characters like MiBe and TrBe even to the Temple, much less any further. Wizmode let me do the following:

1) Experience some of the later parts of the game I would have trouble reaching on my own.
2) Keep a character if he's doing well, but gets unlucky and like rounds a corner and is face to face with something nasty.
3) practice and learn about a character or a build so I can improve it when I'm on CAO and not using Wizmode.

It also lets me occasionally fool around with the game's mechanics. How well can a mummy with L27 Fire Magic do? Which Octopode does better, the 8 rings of evasion one, or the 8 rings of protection one? (The answer was the 4 ev, 4 prot. i guess a good character needs both). I learned that permanent haste won't take long for a level one character to glow to where he's badly mutated and kills more stuff by exploding than he does with his weapon. I learned that it is possible to have a hungry ghost make you starve to death while you're still berserk. I learned that the pain brand is powerful when you max your necromancy. a level 1 spriggan with 27 necro and a pain branded battle axe is actually doing enough melee damage to be formidable. Doing that with something bigger would almost be overkill.

Yes, I'm positive that the wizmode games are nowhere near as special as the games without it. I feel much more attached to my characters on CAO, and I've quit more wizmode characters because I'm bored than I can count, but it's an interesting deviation from the normal game. It's also good to have in the game to keep people like me who get frustrated from trying to do the same things in tEdit or like a cheat engine or something and breaking our game.

I love playing around with Wizmode and altering reality to suit my whim. I haven't tried it in the game yet, though.

Wizmode is good for thematic play. Like, wearing a special artefact which gives insane offense and cripples your defense (rF--, rC--, AC -20, EV -20, Dam +50, Acc +50, Curse). It's not as easy as you might think. :P

Tell me something: if my character has negative AC or EV, do they do anything? Is there a penalty once you're below zero?

Negative AC acts like zero AC, and so does negative EV.

I view negative AC as a black hole drawing hits toward you and negative EV like putting your face directly into the next swing. Thanks for ruining my fantasy

See, I thought something similar as well. Good to know.

Although, I think, in retrospect, if negative values were to be used for those, there would already be a species that start with, or at least easily ends up, with negatives in one category. I could see negative EV for a treant type race that is so slow that dodging simply isn't going to happen for them. -AC is harder to come up with a scenario for. Maybe a species that has thin skin and/or vital organ(s) on the outside. Something with the testicles hanging from the chin would have -AC, since a hit there would be critical.

I'm pretty sure the players are genderless. That's why the gods treat us so well, they identify with us as the only other members of their gender.

You may be genderless - on that I cannot comment - but I and many other players have genders. Also, some of the gods have genders and are referred to by gendered pronouns. Also, some monsters appear not to have a gender so they are also genderless.
