Other fantasy races I'd like to see in DCSS

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

Especially since jumping is ridiculously overpowered in NetHack.

You jump the ogre.
The ogre seems to like it.

Jabberwocky wrote:Yes NetHack knights could jump like a knight chessman. But since NetHack has jumping, it probably means that crawl will never get jumping.

Not quite. Jumping would come into Crawl if it made sense. The fact that the Nethack knight class not only gets intrinsic jumping, but does so like a chess knight, works very well with Nethack's design philosophy of "if a bad pun can be made into a game mechanic, do it". Akin to wands of undead turning being used for resurrecting corpses and cursed potions of gain level taking you up a dungeon level.
You fall off the wall. You have a feeling of ineptitude.

Re: Other fantasy races I'd like to see in DCSS

I'm bored today, so I thought I'd add some more of my DCSS race ideas here.

Fairy Draconian: not really a race, this rare breed of draconian has fabulous rainbow scales that shimmer in as many brilliant colors as an altar of Xom. Their breath weapon is magical energy (like the red glow explosion), and their magic aptitudes all get a boost, but they are now physically frail, and take a penalty to fighting, armour, dodging, shields, and their overall health.

Chimp: These creatures look a bit like shorter, hairier humans, and have similar aptitudes as them, but with a str bonus, and a hit to int. If they're named Donkey, they get even more str.

Kirby: represented by a bright pink @, kirby can instant-kill any enemy by sucking it into it's mouth and digesting it, gaining the enemy's power in the process. Gets a huge racial bonus when using a hammer. Can fly, but only at half the speed of running.

Sith: yes, you too can start the game as a member of the master Sith race, gaining increasing use of the Force as you level up, and a racial bonus when using a red lightsaber.

Ok, maybe these aren't as good as the original ideas. I still think a chimp race makes as much sense as Felids.
The above post is for entertainment purposes only. If you think anything I ever say is backed by fact, or if you cite things I've said in any argument ever, you are insane.

That's showing that they have good stats for air magic.

New species proposal: The Orb of Zot. You're sick of being left all alone at the bottom of a very secure vault, so you must escape! No runes to collect, but has to deal with multiple randomly rolled uniques on each level based on player characters. Also, the dungeon gets easier as you progress, especially as you get closer to the surface where fresh adventurers may mistake you as a mimic, something they can't handle yet, and immediately run the other way.

The final boss is a level 1 newbie who thinks they got lucky with the RNG when they see you.
The best strategy most frequently overlooked by new players for surviving: not starting a fight to begin with.

Giants. Think ogres turned to 11+felids+draconians. You can't use armor, conventionally one-handed weapons, rings, decks, wands, etc because your hands are too big, but you can use any 2hander with a shield. Scrolls are kosher, but you are not accustomed to reading such small writing, and begin with some level of blurry vision. Amulets are still permitted, as otherwise Zin would be mandatory for extended. Potions and poison have half the effect due to your sheer mass. Eventually, you get your true element: fire, frost, stone, air (titan), or flesh (ettin). The first two get elemental blasts, stone giants can pull (weaker versions of) large stone from the dungeon if the walls are appropriate, titans airstrike, and ettins wield two two-handed weapons (assuming this can be coded without too much difficulty - else they may as well get a large slaying bonus for going shieldless); apts change in accordance with the existing monsters of their types.

The sad things is that duel-wielding is on the will not do list.

The fix for that is easy: A giant is so strong by default that he can squish two weapons together into one conglomerated messy weaponlike object. Any two not-already-combined weapons can be merged into a single slot, which has both weapons' properties, and damage rating somewhere above both of them without being too high.

So now you can hit me with your demon-trident-eveningstar-of-pain-and-electrocution.

So DC:SS is getting Ridiculously overelaborate ninja weapons? This is awesome.

It would be interesting to play a Yedi.
  • small species
  • low Str, high Int, high Dex
  • high MR
  • high perception (sInv)
Alright, this looks similar to a spriggan...

Some more ideas:
  • good aptitudes in charms, invocations, evocations
  • unable to use any necromancy or worshipping an evil god
  • restricition in armour slots which is compensated by mental powers (abilities) a Yedi gains at certain levels, e.g. use of the force (whatever this could be)
  • .......
I'm not sure if there's a chance for this species, that's why I put it to CYC. It's interesting that the Yedi's counterpart has already been mentioned!

To all new players: Ignore all strategy guides posted on the wiki, ask questions in the Advice forum, players with lots of posts normally have the best advice.

That's a troll article. Nothing on that page ever actually existed.

Perhaps not in that form, but according to this viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5418&p=72966#p72966 Elm´s as a playable race did indeed exist, probably before any full 0.2 version of the game was made.

Huh. I looked through the changelog and they weren't in there so I assumed they never existed, but they're in the bots. I guess they never left Trunk and so they weren't in the changelog.
